I have been blown away with how good this bike is! It's a short travel 29er trail bike with 120mm front and rear suspension. It's fast climbing like a traditional XC bike but it's when you point this bike down hill that it really shines! So composed for such a light weight, nimble bike!! I love your content. Super informative. very nice review. I'm lucky own the scalpel hi mod with the lefty and full xtr. added a fox transfer dropper. weighs in around 23lbs. its essentially a trail /xc whippet very comfortable all day ride with 2 bottle cages. people sleep on the scalpel in both race and SE forms. some amazing deals out there post covid, bike industry going back to where it was on sales and bargains where it once was.

great decision. If you get a chance review one with a lefty fork its so plush! one other upgrade I think is super necessary after some hard riding is changing the pressfit BB I went with a "threaded" one from wheels manufacturing. under £200 part and fitting@@mtbyumyum

Looking at an almost new one of these with the Lefty Ocho fork. Just curious how the SID compares to that fork. Any creaking from the BB, being it's a pressfit vs. threaded?

Your reviews are still the best. Thanks for the infotainment you give all of us. A few questions about this bike 1) can you lunch ride it add another 10 mm to the front fork if so, desired? 2). If so desired, I wonder if you could put in adjustable head tube cups? Maybe some time could you do a video about Bike computers? Wondering about the one you were using I saw red lights going across the top. I have no idea what that was doing.., sounds like this could be a quiver killer for a Florida rider.

Thanks, yeah, this review got a little long winded haha. No, don't think I would bump the fork to 130mm on this Scalpel SE... the geo just isn't right in my opinion... The sta is already pretty slack. As for bike computers, I've had two Garmins in the past and been using Wahoo for the past 5 years.... the red lights are a indication of my heart rate... green, yellow and red lights let you easily see where you're at in your heart rate zones. If you saw red then I was getting close to my max heart rate... 194 bpm. Yeah, the Scalpel SE would be a killer bike for more moderate terrain! Call Chris at Salt Cycles... he would love to chat about this bike with you and even help out with a computer.... I think he uses this same Wahoo Element Bolt computer... #801-943-8502

Jason: I appreciated your comments re the Scalpel being great for NICA-type middle and high school riders .... XC plus trail plus FUN! Especially for those who may have reached their full height: an all-purpose "one quiver" bike for many years. I noted the Rekon Race tires. How confident are you with them on trails with a bit more 2-3 inch rocks etc.? Maybe use the non-Race Rekon 2.6 upfront and the Rekon 2.4 in the back? I ask because I ride in Colorado (often w/NICA riders) and most of the trails I ride are a bit chunky with small rocks. Great review as always! Many THANKS! 🙂

I'm very confident in the Rekon Race tire. I used this tire front and rear for a 50 mile race in St George Utah called True Grit. It is a course with very demanding, rocky and rough terrain. No problems... although I pay extra attention to where my tires are at all times... that said, I've torn a sidewall on a DHR II tire on those very trails... The bigger concern when running the Rekon Race is braking power... it is a semi slick tire and will change the way you hit the brakes.

Dang!! I was convinced that the Ripley is the better bike, but now I am starting to question myself. I will probably lean more towards the Ripley since I do not see any races ion my future, but that was a great review of the Scalpel.

Dude, you can't beat the Ripley!! As a do everything trail bike it's pretty incredible! That said, for those looking for a little lighter weight, riding with kids who race or if you intend to do a race here and there... this Scalpel SE is a very interesting option. The Scalpel SE blurs the lines between XC and Trail better than maybe any bike out there and I was just really surprised at how well it handles different types of terrain at even higher speeds.... that said, the Ripley has even better trail manners and is the more capable do everything bike should you need a bike for more demanding terrain and higher speeds... the next step up from this Ripley would be the Yeti SB140 LR... again, higher speeds and even more demanding terrain. Test road a Scaple 2 and Pivot Mach 4sl. Absolutely expected the Pivot was going to come away the winner. Blown away by the Scapel. FUN, so comfortable and well spec'd.. plus the discount currently offered made it a no Brainer. The Pivot was good but after 5 minutes I knew the scapel was the winner

As always, excellent review! Very interested in the bike. Not sure Tyler’s height and size bike but the geo looks like it runs small. Being 6’1” with 34 in inseam. I’m more of an XC racer that loves light trail riding. Curious if I should go Large or XL?

Awesome chat about the different bikes guys , you’re so right too , if that was a Santa Cruz it’d be like $9999 💰 not $4600 and then you go for a ride and you’re thinking 🤔 where is the $9999 in this bike 😂!! I did a demo on the Santa Cruz Nomad CCXO1 and after an hour of riding my only thought was “ How on earth is this bike £9499 ?? A great bike for sure but my Orbea Rise was £4000 and it’s just as much fun as the Nomad … crazy!! Great to see Tyler out there ripping it with you J thanks for taking us along 🤘🏾☺️

No, your right to mention dance. I spend a ton of money on my daughter for her dance for 15 years. My boy was racing on a $800 bike that we upgraded over two years. So when we spent $4,000 on my boys 2nd new full suspension bike for his races at nica it was a no brainer and didn't think twice about buying it. I feel that any parent that wants to spend some good money for a kid that's really into riding and enjoys racing it's worth every penny. When we walk though the pits you have to check out all the other bikes sitting on the racks and while watching the races you see bikes that are $7,000-$10,000. I love my kid but not that much lol.

Yep! Dance is insanely expensive in my experience. My daughters love it but dang... a $6k bike that I can sell a year later for $4k'ish sounds cheap compared with a year of dance...

Honestly, the Scalpel SE.... I can't thing of a bike as capable as this with a 120mm fork. Even my personal Pivot Mach 4 SL doesn't feel as damp and controlled as this... well, maybe... they're close. But this is significantly less money.

You need to compare this 120/120 vs the trek top fuel 120/120 When you say supportive suspension. Does that mean harsh over repetitive hits?

no, not harsh.... sportive as in it doesn't blow through the travel... the bike feels damp and controlled through repeated hits

I've still never ridden the Blur or the Top Fuel... for me, for a long endurance marathon race I would take my Pivot Mach 4 and run it in the 106mm shock setting or the Ibis Exie. That said, I think I would feel more fresh on this Scalpel SE at the end of the day... maybe for a multi day endurance race like Breck Epic or BC bike race this Scalpel SE would be the better option... really I think tires could be the bigger factor...

I’ve never tried the Blur either, I’ve had every Santa Cruz bike except the Blur but I reckon it’s an amazing trail bike when it comes to climbing but then you’d probably want the Nomad for the descents !🤣 man it’s hard to pick the ideal bike but for me personally it’s literally just a matter of how much work and effort you wanna put in, like I said before the Santa Cruz Nomad is DEFINITELY NOT the best on the climbs but if you’re willing to sacrifice that to be rewarded for the DH part then it’s an incredible bike and for its size and spec it’s actually not bad on the uphill it’s just personal preference, I never really ride for more than 2 hours so 170mm Enduro bikes have always been my first choice but on a normal trail with not much elevation it’s a bit disappointing so in conclusion I’d say 1 decide where you want to ride and for how long in reality and 2 are you happy putting in a bit more effort on the climbs to enjoy the DH part 💪🏽 that’s my view but it’s just an opinion! Ride safe guys ☺️

Question..Aside from the weight, would you get the Giant Trance 2 or this Cannondale SE? I want to travel far, a least 50-200 miles,and something that climbs well...

It really depends on your speed, trails and riding style. I think this Scalpel se will be more fun at more moderate speeds and climb fast and just feel quicker everywhere! For longer rides, it's an easy decision. Get the Scalpel SE. Call Chris at Salt Cycles: 801-943-8502

You could compare them but the Element and SB120 are in a different category... with the Ripley and Trail 429. This Scalpel SE really blurs the lines between XC and Trail more so than maybe any other bike I've ever ridden...

Hi Jason, I am looking at a Scalpel SE v Epic Evo Comp. They are the same price in my local bike shop. The Scalpel obviously has much better components (carbon bars, wheels, better groupset), but most of my riding is pretty chilled and mellow XC with lots of pedalling. Would you still go for the Scalpel? Thank you.

On this type of bike I struggle to find times when a 100mm dropper isn't enough. I find anything bigger than a 125mm is awkward bc I'm lowering my hips unnaturally low to compress it.

The Element is significantly longer feeling... doesn't have that quick nimble feeling. It's also more capable... meaning it can handle more demanding terrain at higher speeds. The wheel base is much longer than these other bikes. Different class of bike in my experience

I've seen a number of comments like this now... I've always liked the Cannondale brand... am I missing something? I've owned a number of Cannondale road bikes over the years and I've always sort of thought they were top shelf. Peter Sagan road for them for years and I just always thought the brand was very strong??

@@mtbyumyum it’s just that they sell Cannondale bikes at Dicks Sporting goods and other big box stores so the brand is not elite like Ibis, Yeti, others. Not saying they don’t make good products. When you spend over $4K on anything you’d like the product and name to be top shelf.

I had a Cannondale Rush in 2006 really like that bike, it was my first full suspension though, paid $1300 for it. My dad still has his, super stiff frame.

Great question and I plan to talk more about this in a follow up video on this Scalpel SE... The Scalpel is slightly more controlled feeling almost like it has a buffer of support... almost like it has beefier tires on it even though it doesn't... but still slightly more vague feeling than the Mach 4. Even though the Mach 4 is sharper feeling and more precise than the Scalpel, it's still very damp feeling particularly in the 115mm shock setting. In the end, the M4 is the better bike albeit far more expensive. If I had to choose between the M4 Ride SLX/XT build with alloy wheels for $6,199 and this Scalpel SE 1 build for $4,600 I would easily pick up this Scalpel..... it's a no brainer!!

Good point.... I really do think this bike sits right between the Exie and Ripley tho..... it's almost like the best of both worlds. It's just such a good bike and I'm really blown away at the value you get for $4,600 in this Scalpel SE. Even at the Ibis discounted price, for and XT build Ripley with carbon wheels you would be $6,299 and it would be almost 2 pounds heavier than this Scalpel SE. The Exie would be a similar weight and cost much more.... I don't see it on sale right now on the Ibis website...

ah, the 2022's, right! My 13 yr old daughter is on an Exie... I don't think most parents are willing to put there 13 yr olds on $10k bikes tho.... for those you are, go for it!! For those on a budget or just don't want to spend that much, the Scalpel SE is a neat option!

Pretty similar really. It would be fun to ride these bikes back to back. I would say the Yeti maybe feels a little bit more supportive feeling. Not harsh, but just maybe a little more supportive than this bike.

Good question. It's been a minute since I last rode a Ripley. I'd say probably not as good but I've hit several jumps on this Scalpel SE and it's good. There's a tricky little double on this trail called Rush that I've hit a number of times and it's all good. Maybe a 15 foot gap

I was about to dismiss this Cannondale bike review but for $4,600 you get a 25 1/2 pounds bike AND carbon wheels with XT build? Just my carbon wheels cost $2300 a couple of years ago so this is a steal. The only thing that would worry me is the that super thin flex stay. if you look at it without the rubber protector, its is VERY thin and for trail use it would worry me.

That's right. Salt Cycles offering these at this $4600 price point is bananas!! Such a good value. As for the integrity of the frame and carbon chain stays... I wouldn't be too worried. Almost nobody is as hard charging as Tyler and he's been absolutely abusing this bike for the past year! Crazy interesting that you're reviewing this bike. I've resisted looking at a Cannondale- specifically, the Scalpel SE, for YEARS. Part of it was that I didn't see one of your reviews on it. I've got a buddy who swears by it. Now that I'm thinking about it, you're totally right- at some point how much better is a $10K bike compared to a $5k bike- a half-pound that us mortals will never really notice? Great review and you gave me TONS of good stuff to think about. By the way- how tall is your wife? My wife is 5'2" and we're looking for a bike for her. She wants to keep up with our 2 girls and we're trying to decide between a few 27.5" bikes (Shadowcat) vs. a 29" (like this one or a Trail 429). Thanks, Jason!

Glad it was helpful. My wife is 5’4” on an Ibis Mojo 4. Size small, 27.5 wheel size. My daughter is 5’2” on a small Ibis Exie. She’s been on it since she was 4’11”

Doesn't the head tube angle a bit too steep? The Epic Evo has a slight advantage in geometry there, I'd say. If you're talking about downhill capability

Not sure what the advantage is of a 115mm xc/trail bike having "all mountain/enduro" geo?? Not sure if you got a chance to watch this video but in short, this Scalpel se with 67 degree hta blows the epic evo out of the water on the down hill.... not even close

It seems like modern XC geo is 66.5. Even the new specialized epic soft tail race bike has a 66.5. That said 67 isn’t that different

@Rawlins74 it's difficult to say what Cannondale or any bike co should do... more capable is pretty subjective right? On more moderate trails, or really tight trails the "older" geo works better in my experience... gives the rider a more zippy and snappy feeling... of course that zippy snappy feeling can quickly turn to terrifying and sketchy when the terrain becomes too demanding or the speeds too high... so, everything is a bit of trade off. That said, I honestly feel like I'm pushing this Scalpel SE to it's limits on these trails.... very few people ride these trails as fast as I do... not bragging just making a point that if I can ride these trails at these speeds then why does any short travel bike need to be "more capable"? For what purpose would Cannondale or any other bike co. want to make these short travel bike more capable? With it's current geo, I'm pushing this Scalpel SE harder than almost any other trail users out here in Draper.... regardless of bike... If you need a bike that's more capable buy a mid or long travel trail bike. It's the snappy "non lls" geo that makes these short travel bikes so rewarding and fun to ride... they're twitchy at 25 mph... where a Yeti SB140 LR on the same trail and same speed is stable and composed... just coming to life at those speeds. Hope this makes sense?

These old school geo, short wheelbase bikes like the Scalpel are not my cup of tea. While they might climb well, they would be a handful on the descents and I would end up going over the bars. I'll stick with more stable, longer wheelbase bikes like the Spur or the Element and save my skin.

I see what you're saying but honestly, I think you could descent faster and just as safe on this Scalpel SE as you could on the Spur... the Element is a different story... feels like a different category bike actually

@@mtbyumyum The reason why the Element feels like a different category is because it has modern geometry. I've had the pleasures of parking lot test riding many of the Downcountry bikes that you frequently review. I was on the Blur TR and I went to brake and I almost went over the bars. If I could go over the bars that easily, I knew that bike would be a handful on the trail. I've been mountain biking for 35 years and I consider modern geometry to be one of the best mountain bike innovations. It just makes mountain bikes so ridable no matter the travel.

People are also riding the Rocky Mountain Element with a 120 mm fork in the steep position with a 66.3 HTA. It’s amazing how versatile that bike is… it can be 140 mm Pike ultimate with a 64.5 HTA or a 120 mm Fox Step cast with a 66.3 HTA… and be just as light as any of these bikes except for the epic evo

Riders are sick of the LLS bikes of the last 6 years. Shorter wheelbases are needed for most rec riders, but that means going back in time geo-wise. I have demoed many bikes over the last 4 years and they seem pigs in my "trail bike" terrain as current bikes go. I now have a 2013 Stumpjumper Elite 29er alloy. It has a 2023 Pike 150 and a 2023 Rock Shox Deluxe Ultimate 130 in the back. The bike is 30 lbs. Little over $4 invested and owing nothing in 4 years...Owned... packed w tools and a water bottle. I ride right past guys w new bikes all the time. The industry is going toward bike leases w prices that nobody can afford and most will never need. I'm an avid mountain biker for 30 years and ride 100+ miles per week. I'll never buy another new bike w the current state of the industry... catering to snobs, $, and FOMO.

Wow! 100% truth right here!! I've been meaning to create a video talking about the LLS bikes of today... the Epic Evo with a 65.5 hta lol it's ridiculous. They make the bikes ride like crap below 25 mph and most trails are made for more moderate speeds... thanks for your comment. I'm going to make that video....

@@mtbyumyum I'm cool with my 67 HTA and 74.5 STA. Put new parts on it and it rocks! I don't ride in gravity influenced trails like you in UT, but probably 80% of the riders the industry feeds ride in rolling terrain. It is like wearing cowboy boots to the prom for the trails they ride most. I admit the bike park industry has blow up, but it costs $50+ a day for lifts. The bike industry should not cater to extreme riders only. It would be interesting to see time comps from a 2018 bike to its 2023 brother. I bet the times would be within 10 seconds on a few mile run. You do a great job w new bikes, honest opinions, etc. and I hope sometimes it convinces people the bike they have is good enough.
