The rail 29 is uniquely "damp" like he says and it makes the bike extra fun. I've owned Yeti, Ibis and Pivot and they are all great but this bike can find flow and speed where others just don't. As for the balance issue he mentioned, I have not found that to be a problem at all for me. The bike is easy to get along with, so maybe it's just a sizing issue? I'm 6'2" on an XL for reference. So maybe if you're on the edge, go for the larger size and you'll get the benefit of a longer wheelbase and the stability that goes with it. Also he's got a Lyric while Revel builds them with a Zeb that makes the HTA an actual 65 degrees instead of steepening it by .25 or so.

I think the type of trails you ride make a big difference when it comes to the Rail 29. I ride mine in New England where there is a lot of tech, the pedaling efficiency is amazing for the amount of travel. It looks like the trails here are more flowy that what I ride so maybe that's why we have different opinions. I have a full Rail 29 vs the Rascal on my channel if anyone is interested, I also show some riding clips on the Rail 29 so you can see the type of terrain I am talking about. I am a big fan of yumyum's reviews, just not aligned on this one.

Your spot on with the balance point comment. That's exactly how I feel on my Rail29. I replaced it with the SB140LR and don't regret that decision. The one thing I can say with the Rail 29 is that it corners like nothing else I have ever ridden (which I did not expect). I had the Push 11-6 on mine with TRP brakes and those upgrades did make a significant difference on how the bike handled. However, the SB140LR with the same upgrades blew it away. Revel has great customer service and I think this platform is something they are going to build off of. I see this bike getting better moving forward. Excited to see what Revel does with this platform. Thanks for doing this review! Excellent work!!

I recently got a Rail 29 frame and swapped my parts on to it. I have the SD shock currently as i am waiting for my 11.6 to get reconfigured for it. I have not had the unbalanced feel at all. I was actually really surprised to hear him say that and for people to agree. Maybe this frame likes a softer fork? I have a Zeb with a Push HC97 and a Secus. The fork it incredibly plush and supportive at the same time. So much so that i am excited to get the 11.6 on there to balance out the bike.

How would you say this compares to the rascal? I’ve been riding the rascal for the past couple years all along the front range in CO. Only a few extra gnarly trails where I felt like I wanted a longer travel bike. The rascal is still the funnest bike I’ve owned. CBF is definitely unique. Plenty poppy and soaks up enough of the downhill chunk for me. Climbs very well on technical stuff too.
@akjdhfkqwrhetkjanfvkkkresae
The Rail29 genuinely pedals better than the Rascal. There aren't many trails I would feel over/under biked on the Rail29 on the front range. Betasso-Leftahand (aside from maybe the steepest chutes at lefthand) the Rail29 is pretty killer.

Got a chance to ride this bike at the fruita big tire fest. I liked it quite a lot. I still feel like my rascal is just a bit better in most of what i ride. Waiting for revel to put out a v2 rascal. The bike is looking pretty old at this point being the first bike they released. I love it, but coupd do with a bit lighter weight, steeper seat tube angle, and udh compativility.

Thanks so much for this review. Im a rascal rider and have been this close to pulling the trigger on a rail29 every day since it was announced. I love my rascal but I have a few issues and it seemed like the rail29 was just my rascal with the issues fixed. I really want a bike with the same ride character as my rascal but with a little extra travel and a little more confidence on bigger stuff. I just want to be able to also have fun on my local New England trails which are more about tight technical stuff and punchy climbs than big bombing descents. (Yes, there are big sketchy rock features everywhere but that just isnt the riding I do). The rascal is almost perfectly suited, but when I go to the bike park or travel I feel like I want just a little more confidence. I made the mistake of demoing a transition sentinel at the bike park last season and while I absolutely loved it there, I could tell it would be way too much to handle on 99% of my rides. Im also 5'9 on a size L rascal which is almost spot on. I feel like I want it maybe 10mm smaller in the wheelbase and reach, but the medium felt just a little small. Also the seat tube angle is a bit annoying esp with a 150mm fork. I end up doing a lot of hunching over and a lot of out of the saddle climbing. All of this made the medium rail29 feel right on paper but youre almost my height and still describing a lot of what i thought was my rascal being too big (the balance)
@mtbyumyum
@mtbyumyum Год назад
Maybe consider looking at a size medium Pivot Firebird. Climbs really well for such a big bike but doesn’t feel too “enduro”
@Slinkylinky179
@Slinkylinky179 Год назад
@@mtbyumyum interesting! I honestly discounted it assuming it was way too much of an enduro race bike for me, someone who is unskilled and just wants to use long travel to compensate for lack of skill lol. Will def look into that though. Tbh maybe ill just throw a coil and/or burlier fork than the pike on the rascal and call it a day. Just waiting for a used push 11-6 or for a sale.
@Slinkylinky179
@Slinkylinky179 9 месяцев назад
So after much deliberation and taking your comments on balance into consideration I ended up just pulling the trigger on a canfield lithium. It seems like its geo and travel numbers are a little more appropriate for its category but still approachable like revel goes for. Medium has a 20mm longer wheelbase with same reach compared to a rail29 and it has a 64.5 hta. That being said its 160/170 travel which sounds huge to me on paper but im willing to give it a shot. Have you ridden any canfields? I know youre a big cbf fan but I know you also seem to prefer the carbon everything Gucci builds which isnt totally the canfield vibe though their frames really arent bad weight wise for alloy.

I am really interested in the Rail 29 and how it compares to the Pivot Switchblade. I ride east coast trails where there are a lot of chunky rock gardens that require you to pedal through - low bottom brackets are a problem. A friend rides the Yeti SB130 and he just went to 165mm cranks to reduce pedal strikes. My current bike is a 2018 SC Hightower (29). I find this bike to be very efficient and am not planning to get rid of it. I’m looking for something a bit bigger and with a bit more DH capability that is still a good climber and good for technical riding. The Switchblade always seemed perfect because of the high BB, but I’m afraid it wouldn’t be much of a difference from my current Hightower. I’m hoping to do some demos but that would involve doing a trip to somewhere that has demo bikes. I’d appreciate any inout/thoughts.

Interesting perspective, I very much appreciate the insight in all of your bike reviews. I've actually picked up a Revel Rail 29 frame recently. I chose it over Ibis Ripmo. Do you think putting 1degree angle headset on it would benefit the bike or not really. I've had used Wolf's tooth headset on few other frames with no issues and figured 64 degree HTA would fit the Rail 29 pretty good. I guess only way to find out is to throw it on there and see how it feels 😂

Called Revel to check with them first, no angle headsets approved so I gotta stick with regular headset, no biggie. Few guys at Revel run 179mm forks on their Rail29 and since that doesn't void the warranty, I may do that at some point.

I had similar issues with Revel. My Rascal CBF plushness was amazing but the short wheelbase, slack seat tube, and short reach made the bike very odd and conflicted with the rear wanting to go fast and eat everything. I wonder to this day if I should have upsized and would have enjoyed it more but the geo was really discouraging and was not a confident ride at all on fast and/or steep terrain.... It's like an XC bike geo with a enduro feeling suspension. Some people may love that though, but it was not for me.

I'm getting Transmission soon on an Arrival 152, I'd always prefer to have mechanical and never worry about batteries which I loathe, but I was wondering. I probably have something like tendonitis/carpal/etc and was curious if the transmission buttons were super easy to press, as mechanical levers strain my hands pretty badly. Stiff buttons like on a tv remote still hurt. And if anyone has the new stealth code ultimates, are they a less hand fatiguing brake to operate? My dream brakes are hayes dominions so I was considering swapping over as I've heard they're very light and awesome to bleed Super hyped to see how the bike will compare, the geo seems to be between the Rail/Ripmo and a Sentinel. I hope it won't feel too slack, I heard it is extremely good on the climbs! When people describe a bike as liking to be pushed hard, I hope that doesn't mean it always feels boring pedaling along unless you're going super fast?
