Only reason the Star Ward CCG failed was the company lost the license and it was given to papa hasbro.

One idea i always liked was limited mark in the original dragon ball z score ccg. The cards in the first printing were marked in the bottom corner and any future printings didn't have that.

As a fan of classic 90’s artwork, Wyvern holds a special place in my heart. Actually a surprisingly fun game with some unique mechanics for the time!

Middle Earth CCG, Star Wars CCG, and Star Trek CCG are still my favorites.

Rudy if you have any box's of DuelMasters you should do a box opening. Not the Chaotic but the original English DuelMasters. It was such a fun game to play and still is popular in Japan.

i love looking at my old cards and see that they still have value i hope people realize that if nice to put money in a game and still have value in the cards

Rudy I have watched your videos off and on for the past few years. No video has hit the nail on the head more than this one. Pre pandemic my local game store had a thriving competitive magic scene. Post pandemic the store removed competitive play from its schedule and added more commander days. I was furious as the friends i played with started to stop playing. Just recently i was at the store and asked the owner how it has been going since no one i know still plays magic. He said it was doing better than ever. They sell more cards at inflated prices than they ever have and people are buying more boxes. He explained that competitive players will buy all the high end cards but casual players purchased more cards regardless of value.

TCG, CCG, LCG, - I own around 250 different cards from those 3 groups. I have some as booster boxes, some as decks, Some as just packs/Starter decks, And some were so rare and Dead/ Hard to find that im lucky enough just to get 1 single card from some of these very rare/older games. My mission was to own at least 1 card from each game, and yes , this costed me Hundreds of dollars. but once you go down that rabbit hole there's a whole other world of card games out there. And yes even at 250 different titles there's still more card games on the list that I don't have. some being too expensive and others being impossible to find.

The mid 90’s star wars tcc was great until Hasbro destroy it with is shitty young jedi game !!!

Decipher's Star Wars ccg anyone? Still has players, tournaments and new cards via the "virtual card" system. Fun hame but it's complexity kinda doomed it. Also tue one thing i jever liked is the fact that every single Star Wars deck is a mill deck because that's tue only way to win. You jave to run your opponent out of cards and I hate playing against mill decks even more than control decks.

Holy Crap! Even in passing I never would have expected Rudy to mention Star Trek CCG. Man do I miss that game, it was the gateway drug that got me into CCGs back in the 90s.

RUDY : DID YOU EVER BUY/SELL/HOLD ON TO STAR WARS CCG BY DECIPHER (NOT THAT WIZARD'S SHIT) I was an absolute MONSTER Star Wars CCG glutton from 1995-2002. It was very difficult to split my meager McDonald's dough between Star Wars and Magic (Magic suffered). Then all of a sudden, Decipher loses its license to Star Wars and it was all over, just like that. I completely lost my mind I couldn't believe it. My entire existence was over.

I played so many CCG's back in the 90's. Star Trek, Star Wars were great to collect, I still have all my ST cards - except i can't find my Fajo collection - (this really pisses me off). I also played wyvern, Illuminati, Lord of the rings and many more. One of my other favorites was Legend of the Five rings. Still have my Naga deck somewhere. But my serious #2 game (after magic) was called Rage.

The thing is, I think its valid to ask what constitutes success. I covered the original Legend of the Five Rings as a content creator, and I was sad to see it go, but it also lasted until after its 20th anniversary. I think its valid to ask how long a TCG is expected to last, after a certain point the weight of its design being so outdated can bring it down. MTG is lucky in that regard because it has managed to shed the weight of its old rules, and the framework is so flexible, but even it shows its age with things like lands whereas modern game design opts out of in-deck resources most of the time and the games flow better.

The reason people dont care about resudual value is because most of us have no way to unload the value. If i take a cyclonic rift i will get half price anyways. It just doesnt matter. In my budget cards get lumped into my 100 dollars of fun money and i consider it a loss.

Magi-Nation Duel. You can still find boosters and cards from the starter set. For the other sets, cards, not to mention unopened boosters, are rare. Helps that almost no one else remembers the set.

Not sure if it was just our group from that mid 90's era, but we were in college and had little disposable income to purchase. MTG was the first one to have great game mechanics, nice looking cards and a small but loyal following. That following grew as the game progressed, then came the onslaught of CCG's out of the woodwork. Seems like every CCG mag had 5-6 new cards game cards inserted in them. They were covering the new games, but since they (in our eyes) fell short of MTG we did not spend any money on them. Sure, we tried a bunch and played them, but our dollars were thin so we stuck with what was (in our opinion) the best game. Sure, Pokemon and Yugio were successful, but only in the younger market...and those kids usually graduated to MTG once they got older. Now that market has changed and become worldwide. Many of us from the 90's still play CCG's and have more to spend and I think that Hasbro recognized that and sought to exploit it to milk as much money from the market as they could. They lost sight of WHY the game was popular. They tossed out the formula that made us love it and started cranking out mindless junk. Wondering how many out there have just hung up the MTG hat and have either quit or have done what my group has done and moved to SCR? Seems that there have been enough to move the Hasbro shares to record lows. Thoughts?

My wife does not play CCGs at all. Back in the 2000s I did get her interested in the Battlestar Galactica CCG for a little bit. We played games with my collection. I've almost full sets of what little was produced.

My two favourite ccg of all times were Legend Of the Five Rings (excellent storyline released weekly, helped create hype before release next set) and Wow CCG (Magic but simplified and better)

Battle Tech, Spellfire, Illuminati, Star Trek CCG's were also pretty fun but they never got traction in the 90's

Jihad was one of the few that I bought and actually played other than MTG. Didn’t realize it was a World of Darkness game until Jihad rebranded to Vampire. I bought a clearance box of Jihad at Electronics Boutique for like 3 or 6 dollars for the whole box. I also tried playing Arcadia the Wild Hunt without realizing it was WoD.

Who remembers Chaotic, was a great IP and game.

Wyvern, Jyhad & Illuminati. Many fun times playing those games. Especially Illuminati.

I used to really enjoy the old lord of the rings TCG back in the day that came out along with/based on the Peter Jackson films. Obviously no way something like that was gonna last long since it was just piggybacking off the success of the movies but I remember it fondly playing with my brother and my dad.

The card games with the huge IP often failed because of that IP. There is no scope for creativity as the CCG is limited by the universe of that IP and cannot move in a new direction or create new content like MTG. Lorcana will be the same, the IP will limit the creativity and scope of the game and it will run out of approved ideas. That doesnt mean the game cant be fun or have a time in the limelight but it will eventually stagnate and die like the Star Wars CCG, Sar Trek CCG, Harry potter CCG and more.

There were some TCG's from the 90's that weren't too bad. "EVE The Second Genesis" from around 2004-2005 is one my favorites.

Its funny hearing Rudy's telling of Argent Saga. Jim (owner of ARG) and his team created some of the worst interactions I've experienced and heard of in the TCG space even worse than the power hungry teen mods reiging hellfire in the MetaZoo Discord lol He had such a bad reputation with stores in Ohio that i had multiple refuse to carry the game solely because they didnt want to deal with Jim. At a regional I got to witness Jim bloodshot red screaming at my friend at a top table for one of their regionals to take the judge's ruling of a game loss over having some cards not part of his deck on the table (we drove far out and there were vendors so I'm not sure where stuff was supposed to go in a cramped space) or be DQ'd The dev team was extremely green and young and held a "better than thou" attitude when receiving strong feedback regarding balance. Low and behold they experienced many issues with poor balance and a tier 0 format not too soon after the first set Jim also did a ridiculous push on playmats that made no sense to me. Not sure how much of an impact it had, but because he owned a factory for producing playmats he had locals get top 8 and champions mats... every week lmao. Larger tournaments had a playmat with entry, another playmat for the VIP package and top cut. After playing the game for a few months you would have easily racked up so many playmats that it got ridiculous. Thag aside, it also made locals entry price higher and larger tournament prices higher when many players wouldve rather forgo the mat and pay less for entry. Plenty of quality control issues with some of the foils being completely illegible early on probably added onto that. I quit after the nonsense with Jim making a fool of himself to my friend and never looked back. Was not surprised when I saw the game is dead announcement
