The 2023 Ford Escape PHEV is refreshed for this model year and boasts up to 60 km of range per charge. With a fuel rating of 5.9 L/km (39.8 MPG) it's in the 1,000 km per tank/charge range.
A potential drawback is that it's only Front-Wheel Drive.
The addition of a large infotainment screen sees the subtraction of almost all physical buttons, a new light bar graces the edge of the hood and with a starting price of $46,999 MSRP, it's in line with the competition.
What competes with the 2023/2024 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid?

I like the interior and exterior. Black painted exterior looks pretty sleek in-person. No physical HVAC controls is a huge minus in my opinion.

In the US, the Escape PHEV qualifies for a $3750 tax credit which makes it cheaper and I'm finding some Ford dealers are discounting these up to $5k, market dependent. I'm watching the prices over time as I'd like to get one. I've had a 2010 Fusion Hybrid with the same engine for 13 year now, with no issues.

Would also be interesting to see what Steph thinks of the vehicle when she come backs from holiday. Ford seem well behind in the segment of SUVs.

This is from a portion of the summer when I was away, but I’m back at it now. Thanks very much for asking. 60 km of range is decent, but I think it’s a huge miss on Ford’s part to skip AWD on this and make it exclusive to the Corsair PHEV, especially when others in the segment are making it standard. Wouldn’t be my first choice for the price. -S.

60 km of range is impressive which is almost on par with the gen 2 Volt, I get around 70ish km of range with my '17 Volt (I have some highway on my commute) and that is more than enough for me to get to work and do some shopping afterward and get back home all on the battery. The only time I need the range extender is for the occasional road trip, no reason for me to hoard 4-5X the batteries I need for a commuting appliance.

Most people would find a PHEV to be as flexible in this manner as you do. They’re the perfect solution for a lot of households. Thanks for watching. We appreciate it!

Great video! I’m debating between the Escape Phev and the Tucson Phev, the Escape is a bit more expensive ( about 2-3 k more), what’s your thoughts?

Thanks for the kind words! With the Escape getting seven more km per charge for 2024 as per Natural Resources Canada, if you're looking to squeeze every single electric km out, the Escape gets it initially. However, will your daily/weekly/monthly electric driving habits allow you to recoup the extra cost over four to five years? $1,268 is the expected cost of fuel for the Tucson via NRCan while the Escape runs in at $1,740, a significant difference of $472. Source: fcr-ccc.nrcan-rncan.gc.ca/en They've got similar drive feel, interiors are both good and well designed and if cost is a key driver, the Tucson takes it. Let us know what you decide!

@@Modern.Motoring Thank you for your reply! One thing that I don’t like about the Tucson is the lack of wireless connectivity for CarPlay, although I just read that in Europe they already started the upgrade process to wireless connectivity for all Hyundai/ Kia vehicles starting from 2017, but who knows when North America will follow… I consider also the Niro Phev but the only trim available in Canada, Ex , lacks a lot of features: no power seats, premium audio, no sunroof, power trunk, etc…very tough decision considering also the fact that for Tucson Phev, on top of MSRP the dealership will force you to take extra packages of $3000…

Great video Jay 👏 Steph on vacation again 😂. She has what 8 weeks of vacation a year and Jay gets one week 😂😂😂. Just kidding around. The Escape really had a good reliability from the first two generations 2001-2012. The partnership with Mazda and the Duratec 3.0 V6 were solid. Ford really blew it by molesting the name since 2013 with horrendous reliability. They should have called this vehicle a different name altogether. Ford did the same with Taurus nameplate. It was so good in the 1980s and 1990s…blew it on the last generation before discontinuing. It was not even the DNA of the first generation. Wake up Ford! Wake up. You have the resources and knowledge, what’s holding you guys back?

I think they are great. I was afraid myself because I listened to others. It looks cool and they are great. The bigger screen looks great. Clean dashboard. Who wants ugly controls 😅 Check them out and you will like it

I haven’t checked out the Escape PHEV for a long time. I didn’t realize they changed the screen and the climate controls. I have to think this is cost cutting because while it might be something you get used to, I can’t imagine it being an improvement. It was okay for Tesla as they had a car with no competition and they could kind of rewrite the rule book, but people do buying a PHEV are probably not looking for that kind of change. I have a RAV4 Prime that has comically large temperature knobs. I’ve never once thought, “Wow, I’d rather do this by looking at a screen and tapping.” They’ve got the space, why not keep the controls?
