This review is under embargo until midnight, which is why we’ve set it as a premiere. Not sure why car companies still do it! But thanks for the patience anyway 😁
Will be a similar embargo in a few years time when Honda announce they're leaving the Australian market. Honda have had a brain injury since the GFC, their vehicles are irrelevant, and the consumer has much better options. I bought a Honda Accord Euro brand new in 2005. I wouldn't even bother looking at their vehicles now.
CarExpert super misleading on the pricing you guys stated ! Is not 72k “ plus on road “ . If you guys want to do the “ plus on road thingy , put it 60 something k.
NO *** WAY! THANK YOU. This is what I’ve been looking for past few month in Australia now. Cannot tell how exited I am! FL5 is greatest type r for me with its design. Cannot wait to watch it ❤🔥
This is probably my favorite Hot Hatch right now. I wouldn't even consider any other Hot Hatch this is perfection to me :) (Without taking the price into account 😬)
@@wh00t14 You can set the fake noise to "comfort" when in individual mode which drastically reduces the pumped in sound through the speakers. Alternatively, there is fuse I believe that can be removed to stop it completely. Not really bothered by it ATM TBH
I have the Rallye Red, the car is incredible. The small missing creature comforts are easily forgiven with the overall driving experience. I had a Golf R before this, and you nailed it, Golf was a very capable and comfortable car but felt abit like driving a go kart. The driving experience on the Type R is unmatched in its class IMO.
Love your format! Great video as always, Paul 👍 Really love the more refined looks of the FL5 to match the incredible performance carried over and improved from the FK8.
Great review again Paul. I've seriously considered this as my ICE send-off - and what a way to go! Getting your hands on one in Aus might be problematic though.
AWD VWs are slower around the track. AWD is only an advantage in the rain or snow. Why else do you need it besides that? The cars in this class aren’t designed to go in a straight line.
@@davothegreat9990 track performance translates to backroad performance. And everyone drives on backroads. What video are you watching where the Elantra destroys the type r? Lmao and when do people buy these cars to be faster off the line. They’re designed for cornering.
This thing, is f*cking PHENOMENAL. If you're in the market for one, just buy it. Don't even waste your time looking at anything else - they might as well be plastic go-karts by comparison. The way this drives, is just incredible and second to nothing.
Indeed it is expensive, both USA and Straya’s average new car price is around $50,000. And the latest Type R starts at ~$46,000 in USA. It’s just the market difference. 26 million humans in Australia agianst the US’ 334 million. Plus, USD is higher valued than Australia.
I had one on ordered but cancelled it. There’s far too many pot holes on NSW roads these days to enjoy a low sports car. Opted for something with a bit more ground clearance, but if Aus had better roads would definitely pull the trigger on one of these. Amazing car.
@@CarExpertAus that would probably be necessary, best of performance & off road! Went for the TROC R though. Practical, compact, all the tech and very quick.
Great review and it looks like Honda have done well to improve on the previous model. Imo the cost is too much, but I feel the same about most of these premium hot hatches. A Nissan Z is perhaps more tempting as at least it's rwd and 6 cylinders. Kia Stinger or now Genesis G70 offer similar practicality with rwd and 6 cylinders too. Not that it matters much. Honda Australia are content selling minimal cars a year and hence there's a near 2 year waiting list on these Type R's anyway.
Hi Paul..... Excellent review....i got mine last Friday in Championship White...i had a GR Yaris before which was great but sitting position, stop start, high beams and rear view mirror position were awful....this is so much more refined....options are a bit $$ (i also order OEM accessories from PRL motorsports in the US)...$199 capped services....a bit pricey yes but resale should be great....thanks again 🤜🤛
I have a GR Yaris and considering swapping to fl5. Could you please share more about the difference? My main concern is the suspension of fl5 might be too firm. Appreciate your thoughts.
@@yifan5423 the ride in "comfort' mode is fine....in R mode its def firm but the throttle response and steering changes too.....all i will say to you is go test drive one....the seating position and gear shift is second to none.....has plenty of room too (it is 4600mm long)....boot is big and with seats down its huge....the AC is icy icy cold....i have done 1950km and haven't reset the trip meter and it's at 9.5/100km.....on the highway easily down to 7....to be frank with you i don't miss the GR at all....if you a double garage maybe have both :P.....hope you i answered your question :)
This is a great car . Well done Honda. If I could buy one tomorrow and drive it out the door without waiting for $73 K , I’d be in. That’s not the case though sadly. Those who are comparing Honda to Hyundai are dreaming. Hyundai are one of the most unreliable cars on the road after a few years, they have a host of mechanical gremlins that rear their head as the K’s go up. My son has been a mechanic for over 10 years now, and he says steer well clear of Hyundai at all costs. They may be ok for a few years, but then the troubles start.
@@daweigo6851 Not really. It comes from a mechanic who sees what comes through the door on a regular basis. I also have friends who call my son on a regular basis with Hyundai issues. One needed a new motor at 30K km’s in her i30…lucky it was a warranty job after a lot of crying. The same car has just had the head unit fail. She’s sworn off Hyundai forever. Our Mazda 3 which is the same age has had a battery replacement, that’s all in 70K km’s. Another friend had a Veloster with a host of issues. Needless to say it got sold at a loss very quickly, and they are now the proud owners of a reliable Toyota. DCT issues, electric steering column failures just to name a few.
Ahhhh what? Hyundai since 2018 has been more reliable than hondas here in australia. You're living in the past. The gap between them is very small now. There's already a recall for this type r in america lol You're talking about older i30s from years ago. Hyundai are very reliable now
@@CU-nz9ud ive had more issues with my crv than my i30n hatch which did 140k kms before i sold it. my i30 n has a track warranty as well. The type r doesnt.
@@mharro88 As I said, and this is from my son who works on all model cars, they are ok in general for say 5 years, but then they develop issues which he doesn’t see on the Jap cars. Euro cars are similar to Hyundai in that regard as well. Of course you can get lucky or unlucky with a Jap car or other as well.
James Wong in his review of the Type R gave a drive away price of $72,600. In your review Paul you indicated the above price was before on roads. Who is correct?
Looks too big .The previous gen was a discussion of too much or too good .Idk why the new wrx now the type r are almost looking like camrys in size and looks
Such a divisive model and brand here in Australia. The primary issues of the FL5 are affordability and availability, the latter being at the mercy of Honda head office in Japan, who could ramp up production if they choose. If placing an order today in Australia, waiting up to 2 years for a new FL5 is very frustrating. It's incredible there is such pent up demand for certain manual models, when makers complain that if both manual and automatic transmissions are offered, less than 5% of sales are manual.
If a car is priced low expect bad steering brakes engine components air-conditioning seat comfort paint job materials used.. safety which all don't get noticed at the dealer because price is giving you tunnel vision or maybe it's the info screen that does Less in reality...
The question is could you live with the ride on pock marked roads if it was your daily driver? And as manuals are like unicorns these days would grid locked traffic be another game breaker compared to an auto/DSG. For me i suspect it would be. VW's might be dull for some until you throw some mods at them and they become supercars speed wise. 235kw in the Honda is probably more than enough for FWD.
Do you guys notice any transparent patches on the bottom left/right of rear doors? I am asking because I get them on mine. From the video I can't see any. The dealership told me they are from the factory(for stone chip protection)... What's wrong with mine.
Great test thank you as always. I'm going to say something really silly here...any chance of an automatic with heated seats and heated steering wheel? Please don't hate me but it would be perfection for me! Sorry!
@Paulwardzynski3265- It’s disappointing but Honda will never produce this vehicle in an Automatic variant. I’m the same. Where I live having a manual in peak hour traffic isn’t practical anymore, therefore I’d prefer an automatic transmission.
No one talks about the annoying torque steer when pushing this car to its limits, or the lack of a manual handbrake!!! These two flaws aside it's an impressive car. But owning one and a GR86, I'm always going for the GR86 keys.
@@CarExpertAus limited slip diff has nothing to do with the torque steer though. Honda uses clever dual axis knuckle design to remove it. But it will show in wet or limits
@@CarExpertAus interesting you noted this, I didn’t either until after a week of driving mine and interchanging between cars. It’s not exactly obtrusive, but it is there. Great review otherwise Paul 👍🏼
@@Inalielsa The Focus RS used a similar suspension system, but an LSD is the first point of removing torque steer after suspension and drive shaft lengths. Without an LSD (and the dual-axis strut) this would be all over the shop.
But You didn't say that GR Corolla has very few cars available in Australia and Toyota are only catering the Car to Toyota Premium Customers only, they won't just let You walk in and buy one in AUSTRALIA.
In South Africa, there is a debate between a Golf R and a Civic Type R based on the ability to attract pretty girls with it. 😂😂😂😂 They would argue for a Golf R because you dont need to do much explaining, but they are totally missing the point of these cars.
No thank you. For some exactly what they need. Raptor can do all that and much much more. And you don't have to grab the steering to lift your ass of the seat to get it not to scrape on the road. 😅
I wish you guys would do just the most basic research. The price is $72,600 DRIVE AWAY, NOT “plus on roads”. This is a gross error especially considering the servicing is also capped so it’s a fraction of rivals’ servicing for the first five years. Also, the side vents at the front aren’t fake. For Christ sake just do some research and don’t assume if you don’t know the answer!!
Honda limits power in 1st and 2nd gear so the car doesn't translate its true power in the standard 0 to 60mph tests Full power comes in 3rd gear and above and the 60 to 130mph tests show its quickness on the top end The engines are stout and my R sits around 640bhp with a few simple mods on an oem engine. Others have done about 700bhp so far with upgraded cam shafts. The handling is where the car really shines so once you add the power the car really becomes the total package as a daily driver fun machine. HONDATA hasn't released their software to tune these new ones yet but once they do all of the mods I have fit on the new car and will achieve similar numbers Beast of a hatch ❤
@@Joobkl haha that’s what I want to point on this video is wrong lol , is 72k driveaway , saying “ plus on road “ along with 72k is wrong . Very misleading
Enjoyed the review and was also disappointed with the price point, but that’s the price you pay for the king of the hill.I have a 10Gen CTR and it’s excellent. The mechanical grip is sensational and I’ll take that every day of the week over 0-100 pissing contest. It is my daily driver and whilst I have not driven the new CTR, from all reports the ride is much better. I never use comfort mode, can’t really see the point as this is hot hatch with a single focus….to put a smile on your dial. Long live the King of the hill.
Dreaming nothing in it to qualify 70 odd k golf wins everywhere but if it was 55-60 k then H almost wins every time but 4 seats no aircon no info for rear yeah na!!
Sounds like a great drive. Pity it’s so expensive. From what I’ve gathered, I think the I30N sedan is far better value for money. 30% cheaper but only, say, 5% off the Type R experience. It’s a no brainer.
Not uncommon anymore ... 120k+ for the 8Y RS3 hatch. Similar for the A45S. Performance wise, both will chop this in every way as you'd expect for that kind of coin. This channel has a review on the 8Y as a comparison.
