I'm going to show you how I have fixed Hundreds of Ceilings with Water Damage.
NOTE: you should ALWAYS re screw off the ceiling if there is any hint of movement. Often if there's a crack, there's movement and you are just applying a bandaid if you just retape it. Also, MOST of the time you need to float it out wider than 12" or it will show, even if it doesn't in videos on youtube. ⬇️⬇️⬇️ Hey, If you want to learn how to Quickly Improve Your Drywall Mudding and finishing Skills, and reduce the number of problems on your drywall job, check out my new eBook Training Course at: geni.us/DrywallToolsBook
✨✨ MY CHANNEL ONLINE STORE I now have an Online store where you can find printable guides, ebooks, specialty items like 24grit sanding discs and more. Here's the link to the store- www.thatkiltedguystore.com

Thank you. This was a very helpful presentation. The first thing I'll note is how relieved I was to hear you say at the beginning that these cracks are very common. That alone relieved me of a lot of self-induced stress! Your explanation of the techniques and demonstrations of how-to were very clear. I feel much more confident in approaching this project now. I appreciate the thoughtfulness that went into the content. I'm sorry to hear of your medical issues and hope you're recovering well. I appreciate your work.

Guy, I just came across a video where you mentioned that you did some training at Keesler AFB. I was stationed there from 1980 to 1984. I am glad to see that you are on the mend. I certainly hope that your recovery is swift and complete. I really appreciate the videos and the teaching. Yours is the only DIY RU-vid channel that I subscribe to. I have watched other drywall repair videos, but yours are by far the most complete and helpful.

Chris, thanks so much as being thorough and teaching in depth is how I set myself apart from other channels. I was stationed at Keesler for training two times. The first time was in early 1985, so close to you. And the second time was in 1987 when I retrained into electronica warfare. I spent nine months there as an NCO so I got to stay in the NCO quarters, and drive my newly bought iRoc Z Camaro so it was one of the great times in my life. I was getting paid to go to school, then I worked part time bagging groceries which paid pretty good since it was paid in tips only. And I hung out on the beach, traveled up to Mobil to check out a battleship, etc. After nine months of school I ended up graduating at the top of my class so all in all, it was a great nine months. Since you were stationed there, were you an instructor?

I've been doing professional remodeling and repairs for 40 years or so. I appreciate that you explain in your videos a lot of the things that I have had to learn the hard way. Here in Tucson we have a lot of lathe walls and ceilings in the older homes that have sagged through the years because gravy works. One thing that I have done with some of the more extreme sagging is to brace the ceiling up before I screw it to the ceiling joists. First I measure how high the ceiling is at the wall, because I know it's not sagging there, and subtract 1" from that measurement and cut a 2x4 that measurement. Then I use a piece of 2x6 about 18" to 24" long and nail it to the end of the 2x4. I can then use this to brace the ceiling back up while I resecure it. Remember to protect the floor if needed. I hope this helps someone.

Thanks so much! I just went ahead and removed all the stumpled ceiling texture in each & every room of my home (as opposed to the 3 prior). While the other 3 rooms were pretty smooth underneath, the living room and kitchen (which initially I had planned on just tiling as cover up) have cracks and splits down the middle that left me so rattled that I regretted removing the texture and felt like I should've stuck to that original decision of tiling. But you not only showed me techniques that will allow me to get it smooth to the point of non-existence/level five but also ready to paint. This really put my mind at ease to continue onward. I'm gonna be using color on my ceilings BTW.

The fundamentals are there in plain English that are giving me a novice diy person confidence in getting my home repaired when i cant afford to hire someone to do it for me thanks to covid i lost almost everything but i can at least take this time off work to attempt the essential repairs like this that make my home a real home again . keep it up and just know this is me doing the best i can to say thank you very much ..... ..from southern az godbless be safe .....

4:38 This is what separates @That Kilted Guy DIY Home Improvement from all the amateurs who post how-to videos. Kilted Guy takes the time to create custom diagrams so we really understand how important it is smooth out/taper the hump created by the repair. I've seen dozens of experts in RU-vid mention this, Kilted Guy goes the extra mile to illustrate it. This is the difference between "telling" your audience and "educating" them. Thank you!

@@danskroko3537 that is true, and it's how I learnd a lot of what I know about repairs. My dad taught me new construction which I did about 10-12 years, then I got hired on to do repairs for a big drywall company in Seattle while in the Air Guard there, and I found out, it's really a different ballgame. And I made a Lot of mistakes along the way, which taught me a lot. But I created this channel to hopefully save a lot of you from making the same mistakes I did. Some weren't that bad, but cost me time, and maybe resulted in a lower quality. Like the very first time I had to match texture, it was a kitchen ceiling that was removed and re-rocked, and it blended right into the next ceiling, so I needed to match it. My texture looked nice, but it wasn't a great match, so I had to go sand it all off and do it again. Hard lesson learned, and when I put out my video showing how to match texture, I can save others that lesson.

@@danskroko3537 And I actually have about 40% of my viewers that are in the trades, but looking to pick up a tip or two from me. I still learn things from others, so yes, it's mostly for newbies, but also for seasoned pros. If you ever think you know it all, come back after the next mistake, lol.

I've had other people say they always use mesh tape and never had an issue, however, half my work is fixing cracks that were previously "fixed" and soon cracked again because mesh tape was used. Always use paper tape or fiberfuse. Any professional I've ever talked to wouldn't use mesh tape under any circumstances. I even tried it on some joins in my house I built recently just to see for myself and nearly all, if not all of the joins cracked. I'm in Australia so maybe there's some difference in the tape or the drywall or the mud, who knows. But for anyone watching this to try and repair cracks themselves, it's not worth the risk. I understood when the only alternative was paper tape as that's a bit tricky to get right if you're new to this but Fiberfuse is very easy to use, even for newbies. Apart from that, everything else you do is good, Kilt guy!
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 2 года назад
I still say it’s all in technique because I’ve applied at least 500 rolls of mesh tape and never had any issues. I’ve only had one call back for a cracked that reappeared in all the time I’ve been doing this. I’ve gone back to jobs I worked on years ago and one of them I fixed over 90 feet of cracks from the original drywall, and I used mesh tape on everything, and not one crack came back. It’s all about technique and skill. And many people make mistakes that will cause cracking to happen. I made the mistake one time and had about 30 feet of cracks appear but I wasn’t done with the job yet so I fixed it and learned my lesson which was not to use all purpose joint compound over mesh tape.

@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Ha, I just came across your video, Drywall mesh tape, why it fails. But just to clarify, I'm talking about using it with hot mud. Personally I've never used all purpose. Maybe it's to do with how your walls are built? I understand your studs are usually spaced 16" apart? Ours here are usually 24". Then again I also had a 12" nib wall crack so who know. If it works for you, that's great. Would just hate for you to cop backlash from people using it because you've recommended it and it fails on them.

Thank you for the video. I think all of the steps that you have shown are correct. All of my drywall experience comes from the Utah and Idaho areas... especially in Utah, we have severe cold and also it is a desert region! I have found over the years that I’m safer to include more screws whether it needs it or not. Since The drywall mud is extending out around 24 inches at times, I make sure the screws go out that far as well. In Idaho where they have a lot of radiant heat ceilings, and a special RH bass sheet rock was used, then the electrical wires in then two coats of plaster, one skim coat and one texture coat! using that mesh tape , to reinforce the joints,Would always leave cracks in the ceilings...And the old master plaster “Dee Summers”...Explained that you need to use the paper Drywall tape Instead of that sticky mesh tape. Also on A lot of the repair jobs that I have done.. requiring fixing other peoples drywall patches, I have noticed that they have use that mesh tape and it seems to not hold like the complete bonding that you receive from using the paper tape. So that would be my suggestion! You were guaranteed to not have any further cracking by using the paper tape. In using the paper tape it requires one additional phase. You have to tape it using mud then let it dry before the first coat over the tape! That’s why people love using the mash because you’re actually skipping one phase and you can go ahead and just apply your mother directly over The mesh tape and you don’t have to wait for the paper tape to dry...A lot of cracks in a ceiling are Caused by water leaks ,and And the insulation absorbs that moisture, spreads out into a larger area, creating a lot of weight and pushing the ceiling down. Putting more screws in always illuminates movement in the ceiling. Where are you have a movement you will have more cracking. I thought your video was awesome, and showing a lot of detail on how to feather out of your edges and ensure that you don’t have that shadowing affect which that there has been a patch or poor drywall job! Thank you so much for the video.

Hi Stephen and thanks for the comment. I to have fixed a lot of other peoples repairs and yes I have seen a lot of mesh tape in those. But I’ve also fixed a lot with paper tape as well. And here’s the thing, I have gone back to numerous jobs that I have worked on years later when the customer decided to do more work on their home. I always go look over my old work and I have never seen one of them fail. The reason is that I always use hot mud. One Time I doubted myself and used regular joint compound and I got a ton of cracks so I learned my lesson. It’s all about technique and I feel that either one works just fine because I have seen paper tape crack many times so it’s not fool proof. And I don’t even do new construction anymore so for the last 15 years I have repaired thousands of homes and I have gotten to see dozens of them years later and have never had a failure. This has convinced me that the mesh tape failures are due to improper techniques. Thanks again for commenting.

Every job is different, if it is mesh tape on the original ceiling I'll repair it the way you have here. Fix any screw pops tighten it all up and so on. If it's paper tape, I'm going to cut the original tape the length of the crack, and remove it.. usually it was installed with AP joint cement and should basically peal right out once you get a knife under it. Put the new tape right back where the old one came out.

Love your content. There are no videos on youtube about repairing a crack on a level 5 finish ceiling. All the new construction in my area are using these flat finishes on ceilings( no more texture). How do make it not look like a disaster? Is it the same as your other video on repairing cracks and skim coating and just more sanding? Thanks and keep up the amazing videos.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 5 лет назад
Hi Brian, and thanks for asking. Sometimes drywall is multiple steps, and yours is in this case. Start with doing the repairs and getting them as good as you can. Fix all the nails that are showing, coat any joints, fix any humped butt joints, etc. So get it in really good shape. Take your time and be patient. Once you have it as good as you can, THEN, for a level 5, (the toughest finish to do for a seasoned drywaller) you skim coat it like in the video below. But it takes one extra step over what I did in the video. You skim coat it, let it dry, then sand it with 220 grit or finer, Finer is better as you don't want any scratches to show through. Next, get out a light you can shine right across the ceiling. Go around and look for EVERY little divot, ding, scratch, edge etc. I recommende doing this with a light and a pencil and circle every nail divot, ding, etc, and draw a line down every edge. Then tint some mud a very light blue with chalk dust mixed in water, then added to your mud. You then go fix all the things you marked. You use blue tinted mud because level five requires you to sand Everything you are about to touch up. Once dry, look for the blue spots, sand them REALLY lightly. Now prime with a primer with high solids, and put plenty on, with a 3/8" nap roller. Then 2 coats of paint, and don't skimp. And you'll have it. It's not actually that much harder for drywallers to do, but it's more work for sure. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h7o6dc-wfxs.html If you find our assistance with your projects helpful, I hope you'll consider supporting our channel by making a one time donation in any amount at: paypal.me/ThatKiltedGuyVideos?locale.x=en_US

It’s all an art of illusion. We really never leave things perfectly flat on cracks and butt joints, we just create the illusion of it by floating it out wide enough to make the hump so gentle that you can’t detect it. Glad I can help.

Hello, I use a sander like this one for pole sanding amzn.to/2CfHwp8. It works with many different handles like brooms, etc, so it's pretty affordable. I sand with 80 grit when rough sanding. When it needs to be light sanding, or for finish sanding I use 150-220 grit. As for tools to fix a ceiling, you mostly need a pan and knife like this set amzn.to/2XVB5Re. You could get by with a hand sander, and you might need a texture machine, but you can rent one from most rental yards. Hope that helps and thanks so much

Thank you for mentioning wet sanding. I tell anyone who will listen that wet sanding is a myth. It works to knock down a heavy edge or if you need to minimize dust, but not for a finish coat. For a smooth finish and clean feathered edge you have to finish with a thin coat of mud and or sand.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 5 лет назад
Yeah, I only use wet sanding for the thin edges. I feel wet sanding just rounds over the thicker edges, and just doesn't do as good a job. I try to minimize sanding as much as possible, but when I have to sand, dry just works better. I explain it better in this video about wet vs dry sanding - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9Ztudl3LIhc.html

Bring a joint knife with you just in case you fudge an edge. This was going over painted surface too, the bottom 2 feet of every wall in the building was replaced.... Terrible job, skill level 5000. 😂

I had a crack from ac vent cut out then spiderwebbed out bad. Repaired it with mesh tape and hot mud, which eventually bubbled up badly. I dont know what I did wrong. Think when ac air turned on I didn't mud the beginning of the ceiling crack correctly which allowed air between the crack and mud and caused the bubbling. Any thoughts or tips so I can correct my issue, much appreciated and respect for everything brother. God Bless!

This is the first of your videos that I have watched and I thought that it was very good. I will watch more but I have a question. You said that you use hot mud, do you mean that you put hot water in you quick set? That would make it set up faster then it does already right?
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 5 лет назад
Hi Rick, and thanks, glad you enjoyed it. But as to your question, NO, I never put hot water in hot mud. The term hot mud comes from the fact that the fast setting muds set up chemically, and this creates some heat. Not much, but you can definitely feel it. There are some who suggest adding hot water to the hot mud, and you can, but I've done it in the past, and it speeds up the setting time, but you wont know how much. I like knowing exactly how much time I have before it hardens into a mud you can not wash out of your pan. I've been caught working it too long numerous times and it's a major PAIN to have to scrape it out of your pan and off your tools. So if I want a faster setting time, I use .... a faster setting mud. I carry 5 minute, 20 and 45 on my trailer at all times for that reason. I've spread thousands of bags of hot mud and can spread out a full pan of 5 minute before it sets, if it's on one repair spot. Otherwise I mostly use 20 minute. So if you try the hot water, beware that it may catch you off guard.

I have it, but didn't find any benefit, and to me, thinner is weaker, a little anyway, so I prefer my Yellow mesh as it's much easier to spot when you put a lot on all over the place. And I've only had one job crack in the last 10 years, and it was likely due to the building shifting, but either way, mine just don't crack the way I do it. I've gone back to a job where I fixed over 100' of cracks, and 3 years later, they still hadn't come back. But use what works for you my friend.

Great video and he's extremely experienced, I do alot of drywall myself where I work but am also a painter, I've run into huge transitions taping and mudding and especially in commercial buildings where there's metal stud framing, I use these same methods, use my knife as s level to show my highs and lows, I use a pencil, not pen or sharpee, they'll bleed through your paint later unless you spot prime them with shellac. Anyway, I use usually 20-60 minute hot mud to, on my first coat after hot mud I use regular Joint compound and go to a wider knife and blend my edges to remove my hard edges, then I use light topping compound for my second and third coats. when I have big transitions I do the same thing, float it big to make the transition more of a slope rather than a set of stairs. After I'm on my 2nd coat I'll again put my knife or straight edge on it and see where it's at, if I have a low spot I'll gradually fill it in and the high spots I don't add no more.

Is the crack over the corner of a door? Sounds like it was hung wrong. If the drywall joint is over the corner of the door on either side, the best thing you can do is correct the hanging. It will break again in the same spot before long of you don't. A joint over a door should always be near the center of the door, not on either side.

I have always been taught to V the crack out, screw it off, prefill with durobond, and then proceed with mesh, hot mud, ect
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 5 лет назад
I have heard that and even used to keep a close shaped can opener to v out the crack but after thinking about it, it never made sense. The only time it makes sense to remove solid material and then put more solid material back in its place is if the mud is loose and trying to chip or bulge already. So I quit doing that at least 20 years ago and have never had a problem. I have gone back to dozens of jobs, years later and it has never caused me a problem so I believe it is wasted effort. Thanks for reminding me about that. I may do a video on that one day.

@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 5 лет назад
Re-posting from the other reply. Ok, I agree and disagree, so let me explain where that's wrong. I did new construction for 15 years and used only paper tape, (and still saw some paper taped joints crack). Then I got into doing only repairs and over the last 20 years I've repaired probably 10,000 holes and cracks, and have strung well over 1,500 rolls of mesh tape, with at least 5,000 bags of hot mud, and I've gone back to numerous jobs many times, often years later, and only ONCE have I seen one of my repairs crack. In once house the original drywall was done very poorly and I fixed over 150' of cracks, and came back 3 years later, and not one had failed. I NEVER get callbacks, and have a 5 star rating on my work. You can verify that by reading google or Angies List, or even facebook reviews for Mr Patch Drywall LLC. So here's why they fail. I guarantee you that 99.9% of the time novices buy the green label all purpose, which is an excellent mud for taping, but ONLY for paper tape. It should NEVER be used for mesh tape, but they do, and it fails. But there's another reason, almost no one, including handymen re-secure the crack, and that leaves it weak with movement, so it will crack. I would also estimate based on my experience and on listening to comments on my channel and others that about 80% of handymen use green label all purpose, about 60% of painters and even about 40% of drywallers, because they don't realize you have to use hot mud over the mesh tape. I once got lazy and used all purpose and learned my lesson. About 10% cracked by the next day, and that's NEVER HAPPENED with hot mud. So folks, if you use hot mud, and re-secure the cracks, you will be fine. But if you use all purpose mud of ANY kind, use fibafuse or paper tape.

I've read differing opinions on whether to use Plastic of Paris or joint compound for repairing long drywall cracks and I am confused. What is the best material to use? Thanks
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 4 года назад
Well I've never heard of using Plaster of Paris, but fast setting joint compound, aka Hot Mud, is the best for sure. Absolutely never use all purpose mud over mesh tape as it can crack much more than with hot mud. But if you have to put it on heavy and sand it smooth, don't use hot mud, as it sands very hard. In that case I'd use paper tape, and all purpose.

Can you tell me what material I should use on ceiling cracks in an older house, maybe 1960’s? Might be a plasterboard.

Excellent video but a couple questions. 1. Why mesh tape vs paper tape? 2. Any reason you don't widen out the crack (ie V shaped) and force mud into it? Thanks
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY

1- it’s faster as a pro 2- it doesn’t help. Mud in a crack has almost no strength

Question In repair cracks in ceiling with knock down finish, do you sand it first or just cover up the existing knock down with a wider cover to hide the hump?

This was a repair over knock down, so just like I did it here

Elastrometerics caulk and a wet rag will do the same thing a lot faster. Just dab screw heads with one time and light sand with wet rag. Been doing it my whole like and Im 50 something. A lot lest steps saves a lot of time.

Great video! Quick question, how do you find the ceiling joist? Thank you!
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 5 лет назад
Hello, good question. Sometimes I can tell by popped screws where the joist are & once I establish the spacing I can just mark them out with a tape measure and pencil. Other times I can see the screws for one reason or another but if not, just use a stud finder. Let me know if that helps.

If the crack is not along a straight line like you showed in your video, how do we fix it? Thanks.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 5 лет назад
Still similar. Try to screw the sheetrock back down wherever possible, then if you push on the crack a little and it doesn't move much, you can just tape and refinish like I showed, but of course you'll have to cut the tape each time it zigzags and such. If the crack is still moving too much, you might have to cut out the rock and replace it, or get some backing behind it to solidify it and put screws into that. But honestly, I almost never have had to do that. Like once every 200 cracks maybe. Let me know if that helps.

I have a few trouble spots because of seasonal truss rise. My mistake was screwing the ceiling drywall too close to the adjoining walls. I should have allowed the outer edges of the ceiling board to "float".

My home is only 8 years old and all the joints on the ceiling have cracked. Anyway I am planning to tackle this job myself. I have been contemplating whether to just cover the crack with new tape like you have demonstrated in the video. Will this work or do I need to remove the old tape and reapply new. ( I understand new construction homes will get all sorts of cracks and nail pops due to the settling process. Do you think adding a humidifier to the HVAV unit will also prevent cracks? I have noticed various areas throughout the house where caulk have been applied remove and reapplied have crack.

I only remove the old joint tape if it wants to come up easily, otherwise it’s just a lot of work that’s not needed for my way of doing things.

Got crack 20 feet long on the joint. This is plasterboard ceiling, 3/4 inch thick. Above is attic and easy access. May I fix it from the top? Crack tape and hot mud? Do I need tape from bottom? Hump will be not easy to cover. Thank You.

I would not recommend that. To fix a crack that's not recessed you just have to figure out how to float it out wider to make it hide. Check out this video on how to do that. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wqM5Y8RoLiU.html

you can fix those kind of cracks in there I see how you do it you get a piece of duct tape and put it over and then you put the kind of paint over just covering it quick way I don't know if it's leaking a little bit while then you got to go a little deeper

Hello sir. I just signed up to your channel after seeing you on c Jane drill. Would you have a video on repairing a hair line crack no wider than a fine pencil line. It's only visible if you really stare up on the ceiling. It runs halfway across my living room ceiling then stops. 1950 home. I suspect , it was caused by the crazy high snow amount on roof this winter even if I lightened the load on three occasions. So to the point do you recommend mesh tape or will paper be fine to prevent it from Recurring. Btw no other cracks on ceiling. . I'm a real novice and would appreciate any advice or a referral to one of your videos. Cheers from Shawinigan Qc Canada.

Hello Suede Delray. That was fun doing that live video with Leah. We've chatted by phone since and I hope to meet her in person one day. As for cracks, hairline or bigger, I fix them the same way. No caulking or paint will fix it for more than a month or two. I have laid down probably 200,000 feet of mesh tape on repairs, and never had a problem with it. But the secret is to use a fast setting joint compound over the mesh tape on the first and/or 2nd coat. Then you can use an all purpose mud. Hope that helps. Guy

Thank you sir I really appreciate the reply. So I should use that mesh tape as opposed to the paper if I understood you. In Canada do you think they sell the rapid set mudd. Finally do I open up the crack even if it's hair line or leave it as is and cover it with mesh tap and mudd. Again thanks for helping out a real novice. You really make fantastic videos and are a natural teacher. Cheers from Canada.

@@suededelray6207 I would recommend opening it up a little, do like he did, put new screws both sides of it. Opening the crack a little allows you to get mud in the crack which tends to make a stronger repair.

Will the same process remain the same with plaster ceilings and walls?
@kennethwilliams2738
@kennethwilliams2738 3 года назад
Basically the same, but I would recommend reading some material of historical restoration of plaster. On plaster cracks in different directions mean different things. And any structural damage to the home should be addressed first. Also, if the plaster is really loose, it should be removed, because any repair will be very temporary. Depending on the condition of the plaster, it may be worth repairing. If it is, the crack should be opened up, a can opener or paint scraping tool works good for this. With plaster, any meaningful repair needs to reattach the plaster to the lathe. I would use the knife sideways against the crack so as to full the crack completely. I recommend the sheetrock brand brown bag setting mud for base coat..... It tends to be more stable when setting. The sandable hot mud that he used may not set well on plaster, especially plaster with particularly high lye content. Brown bag is not sandable though, so be careful, and issues will need to be scraped off after it has set but before it is allowed to dry.
