Interesting conversation. Luckily, I don’t bet because I always like something about each one of the runners. Two Phil’s might win because of his apostrophe; Lord Miles because of Begum (that’s a story); Tapit Trice because he does it his way; Forte because he had floppy ears;…… Also, from this discussion I learned a new euphemism: “dropping out.” That leads me to wishing all of the horses in the Derby and all of the other races that weekend, including The Oaks, safe trips. I applaud them all. (Oh yes, maybe just maybe Wild on Ice could be remembered during the NBC broadcast. I know that’s a no-no never done before but there needs to be a first time.)

I used the three favorites ( Wet Paint, 5/2 , Southlawn 8/1 and one more recommendation) for the Oaks /Derby future wager, the favorite Wet Paint came in fourth.Every " expert" is right before the race, but nobody really knows, not the jockeys, not the trainers. I talked to trainers @ Gulfstream for years, and they do not know how the horse is going to run.Once Peter Walder gave me his horse as a winner, but it went off at 3/5, so I did not even bet.

Thanks men! And Jerry, I want to say that as a four year old Cigar is the best of all time, at four. At three it was Secretariat. Of course Secretariat did not get a chance to race at four. But what matters here in present tense reality, is we can see very, very clearly into the past. I got sober in 1976. But never got blessed with a Cigar!

I've watched about 20 hours of Derby analysis. The more I watch, the more confused I am. Such a hard year to analyze. I like Mage and Verifying as they are contenders with what might be high(er) odds. For those who want to discount them because of losses last time out, watch the 2003 Wood Memorial. Then the 2003 Kentucky Derby. Watch how Funny Cide, who fought like hell to the finish in the Wood got "out-classed" and "out distanced" in the Wood Memorial by Empire Maker, EASILY turns the tables on the "far superior" Empire Maker.

Maybe Mandarin Hero is the best Japanese horse?? He was getting to the winner of the Santa Anita who will probably burn $$$ in the KD. I hope he draws in!

It's funny to me that Forte has beat alot of these and put better horses off the derby trail but all the so called experts are trying to beat him because of odds he will be on all my tickets

This is Japans time with Derma Sotogake and Christophe Le Maire do not forget this race will be a history making race for Japan as the first Japanese horse to conquer the Kentucky Derby certainly Derma will be close up the lead but it must be remembered the further the race the more Derma wants to run hence the distance is no hinderance for Derma as he should be in the lead after seven furlongs or within two and a half furlongs from home scooting clear onwards nuff said

I know this is a bit off subject, but following the tragedy of Wild On Ice, I would love to see his jockey, Ken Tohill, get a mount. Say another scratches, that puts Cyclone Mischief in (if I remember correctly) , if he is lacking a rider, I’d love to see him on board. Not just for the sentimental side of things, but I imagine that combo would be quite interesting. The man has won over 4,000 races, and the horse has speed.

I beg to differ that Verifying will be the pacemaker and keep on going. Popular belief is that there is no pace in this derby . I do not think so either. Let them prove me wrong. I know the horse I am rooting for has little chance to win. If only his original trainer trained him....but at 50:1 and post 7, I will still put my $2 on his nose

Great show Pete....these two guys really know their stuff....with regard to a potential Triple Crown Champion this year, without Baffert in the race, there is something close to a zero chance of a Triple Crown this year....one of the downsides of excluding him from the race, you pretty much eliminate the chance of a Triple Crown happening.....if Arabian Knight (trained by Baffert not Yakteen) was in the race, you would have a much better chance of a Triple Crown this year....

I don't like the new points breakdown. I think it's nuts that finishing third or fourth in two stakes will get you in, but losing the SA Derby by a nose leaves you out.

Moss, still no clue. Lots of conjecture and BS. When the gate opens then we will know. Perfect race conditions can brave up anybody to throw caution to the wind and many might send! Derby is a ruffly run race, with riding orders given to many. Lots of excuses and only one winner. Randy, they don't race them on paper, and that's why they run em. If you think they are going to let that foreign horse get an easy lead you r all dreaming.

Arabian Knight would have had a huge chance had he not been injured. Bob Baffert will bring him back and dominate in races involving the horses mentioned in this video creation
