Your review is absolutely exceptional with the break down, the measuring, the explanations, etc. thank you! I really like the new improvements. Very promising for Daiwa's future to see them keep looking for improvements, even when they already have an exceptional reel. 👏👏

Love all the details and break down of what has been changed and improved. I ordered two of the 1000 and One of the 2500 and have about a week to go before they arrive. I think for the money they are as good as anyone could expect from what you are showing here. I agree also that the old bail looks better but really they both serve the same purpose so the new one doesn't take away from anything. Thank you for the time you spent breaking this down. Good stuff.

Hi Victor! Great review. Yes, it's a huge difference in weight/design of the new rotor. What makes it a even bigger difference is comparing the new rotor to the much 1st gen air rotors. Thanks for your time!

Good video Victor....Good that you have so much focus on the weight of the rotor, (and elsewhere) I got a shock when I tried my new Shimano Exsence C3000 MHG-A (Japan). You can really feel how much weight matters, but the handle is very heavy (26 grams), you can use one from shimano vanquish

You are the absolute best at discussing reel design! I've suscribed and am going back and watching all your videos. Two questions: What function does the rubber o-ring on the main grear perform, and what does the bearing in the back of the pinion gear sit in? Is it the back of the body cavity or behind that cavity?
@ifishcatfish
@ifishcatfish 7 месяцев назад
the o-ring improves contact with side plate and bearing. The back bearing sits in a hole in the frame, just like in the revros, but in the revros it is the pinion sitting in the frame and here a bearing sits in the frame and the pinion sits in the bearing

Your first reviews of the Legalis LT 2017 was the reason I bought my very first one in 1000 size back in 2018. I added a 2000 and 3000 size in 2019 to my collection and now looking to add a 4000 reel and this new 2023 Legalis LT is exactly what I will be getting and again your review has done the job. All three of my 2017 Legalis LT’s are still as smooth and tight as the day I first unboxed them. Used to be a Shimano fan but since getting that first Legalis I have not been bothered to look at Shimano again.

Quick tip Ifish drag grease is perfect for all threads for screws anywhere on reel

Ha! That's what i have been doing! They say don't put grease on the screws so they don't get loose, but for me, i want the second time i open the reel to open it without stress on the thread, or mangling the head of the screw. I just like to removes screws easy and until i lose one of them i'm gone keep putting grease, so its easy to On and Off

Hi Victor, i'm a subscriber who loves your videos and I really appreciate the time and effort that you put into them. I'm a saltwater fisherman usually chasing larger reef fish and pelagic's so a bit different from your ultra light world - perhaps a small crossover with my estuary gear that runs 2000/2500 series reels. As an engineer of 35+ years, i just like watching them from a technical perspective ........ and i like your accent (I'm Australian). Just a note for your followers/readers on reel bodies. Sometimes the term 'plastic' is used and said in a negative manner. In high-end engineering applications (aerospace, piping, military structures, robotics) as well as sporting equipment, we use carbon fibre composite plastics which have mechanical properties far greater than any metal. Also, the terms strength and stiffness are often used interchangeably or incorrectly - in simple terms, strength is a measure of resistance to load or force and stiffness is a measure of resistance to deflection or deformation. Standard Carbon fibre has a stiffness (elastic modulus) about 10% higher than steel and so about 3x that of Aluminium, and a Tensile Strength about 6 to 7x that of steel - Aluminium has many alloys and tensile strength is completely dependent on the temper used but most popular is around 90MPa so standard carbon fibre about 35x that of Aluminium. You can also get high modulus, and high strength, carbon fibre which has 2x the stiffness of steel at about 1/2 the weight of aluminium. Given these high mechanical properties only low doses of carbon fibre are usually used to keep costs down. Lower-end applications such as tools, car parts, and sporting equipment (which includes spinning reels) composites are usually engineered so that they just have better stiffness to weight ratios than competing products - usually aluminium in the spinning reel world. Any low dose plain weave carbon fibre composite should have a higher stiffness to weight ratio than most commercial aluminium alloys so not difficult for any reel manufacturer to produce - if that is what Zaion V is supposed to be??? From the comparison at 4:00 we can all see that the support arm at the junction with the reel body has been significantly thickened geometrically so would have much greater stiffness even without changing the composite structure. As the weights are still the same as you measured, Daiwa have likely changed the composite to reduce the material density - and may have also reduced dimensions elsewhere. Would be interested in some data on Zaion V for sure.
@ifishcatfish
@ifishcatfish 5 месяцев назад
good post, but remember that on the video i have 2017 model, and not the 2020. I did review the 2020 model in a nearly identical video and then sold it, due to it being in a blue color that i didn't appreciate. I believe the frame updates happened in 2020 and there were no frame updates in the material this year. Of course the frame is a little different due to different geometry inside the reel but it is hard to tell from that if there is a new material. At the end of the day, the 2020 model already had no flex (1) so the 2023 model is not upgrade in terms of flex, and the 2023 model is not any lighter (2) so we have no upgrade in terms of weight. Because of (1) and (2) i think it is safe to say that there is no frame upgrade, even if they did use a different material, because different would not mean upgrade.
@MartyScrogings
@MartyScrogings 5 месяцев назад
@@ifishcatfishthanks for confirming mate. I saw your 2020 review with the thicker support arm but because they are not side by side in this video, couldn't tell if it had changed profile again or if the body had changed in any way. Agreed, different does not mean upgrade - as we have seen time and time again over the last 15yrs, some reels went backwards (generally not the cheaper reels though).

@brianpeter7139
@brianpeter7139 7 месяцев назад
Zaion V is *stiffer* than the previous material, not lighter. It's used to reduce the handle flex that the previous models had. But it does weigh the same.
@ifishcatfish
@ifishcatfish 7 месяцев назад
But if it is stronger, they can make it thinner and still save weight. Also, it is made by adding carbon. How do u add carbon, which is weighs nothing, but do not reduce weight? I am just thinking logically but i don't know for sure. Do u have a legitimate source for this? Can i read something?

i have no idea what that is, but there is only a few companies in the world that make fishing reels. This mumbo-jumbo of a name is just a label that they put on top of reels that are made by okuma in china or by the korean factory that makes abu and lews reels and a bunch of others. If you want to buy 5 000 chinese reels, u can call a chinese factory and they will make some ebay garbage and will put your label on it, but good luck selling that when legalis is so cheap and so good.

I just received this reel and it’s a great finesse reel. It feels like a Sahara to me. In a blind test I would think I’m holding a Shimano. I know you said it shouldn’t bother anyone but for me the bail does. The thin wire and the “springy” audible click while opening the bail drives me nuts. I’m accustomed to Daiwa air bail and quiet open design. The only noise I like my reel making is drag clicks. Other than that it’s a fantastic reel! Any recommendations on a similar Daiwa reel but with a hollow bail?

In 4:00 those metal rods that support the oscillating shaft they are on the revros 2015 model, both upper and lower of the revros 2015 frame have that, thus the shaft is steady when oscillating, and yup the bearing on the pinion gear in the revros 2015 is only one thus it is feeling gritty when turning it. I hope daiwa will upgrade that Anti reverse clutch on 10:00 because that anti reverse easily corrodes under saltwater conditions, unlike the KOYO branded anti reverse clutch that the higher models use (btw it is blue green in color, on lower models its black) If they upgrade the anti reverse bearing on the lower models and removing the reverse switch below that reel, that reel will be a great reel. Btw the bail is airdrive design, its the same as the saltiga and lexa Lt 2023 model, i think they are trickling down the techs from higher models because on shimano Ultegra they have done that, what technology the higher model have they are using it on budget reels.
@ifishcatfish
@ifishcatfish 7 месяцев назад
Shimano is reluctant to introduce tech from over 200$ reels into sub 100$ reels though. But daiwa did. I don't think the ARB needs upgrade. This reel has no seals and u are not supposed to use in the salt. U can upgrade everything but that only increases cost. The reason this reel is amazing in because it is so good and still under 100$. The bearing is perfect for freshwater in my opinion. U can buy the Fuego if u want to fish salt and the ARB will have protection.

Hi Victor! Is a 210 grams ,2000 size reel considered ultralight? Because if so - I may have a challenger and it is Tailwalk Speaky 2000. I don't know if you can find Tailwalk products in the USA. It costs around 200 USD, but you said regardless of price. The reel feels and looks amazing. It will be great if you have the time, desire and possibility to take a look at the reel and share your thoughts. I wish you all the best, sir!

Never heard of them. It's heavier than anything in my Buying Guide, but weight is actually not a limit for the Ultralight label. Size 1000 and 2000 is considered Ultralight.. I am not eager to spend 200 USD just to 'try it' though.. Kastking just sent me a $120 reel for review. If they send me one for review, i will review it, but will tell them the same thing i told Kastking - i will say whatever i want to say in the review, even though u sent me the reel for free

Very comprehensive review! New subscriber here! I'm trying to get back into fishing after a 30 year lapse. I finally have time in my older years to get back out there. Originally I was going to purchase a Legalis 1000D until I watched your review and you suggested getting the 2000 with the slower gear ratio. Does the gear ratio really make all that much of a difference when you're fishing for panfish? Keep in mind there is a $30 price difference between the 1000 and the 2000 you recommended. Thanks in advance... Dan

Amazing, well thought out and in-depth review. I wish we had more content like this on youtube instead of the usual "taking it out of the box, spinning it and saying it's good or bad" kind of videos. On another note one thing came up in my mind about the new LT reel range. Not so much in the ultralight aspect, but in general spin fishing here in europe i have heard of several reports that people have found reels like the vanford and vanquish to not be as good at fishing with hard lures or lures with large resistance because of the MGL rotor as it has less rotational momentum due to the rotor's decreased weight, therefore making the retrieve of such lures less comfortable. Coincidentally i find it odd that Daiwa has decided to add this similar style of rotor to all of their reels as it might be a deal breaker for certain customers. What do you think?
@ifishcatfish
@ifishcatfish 7 месяцев назад
I think someone who is confused spread rumors that he shouldnt be spreading. Heavy rotor will offer u zero help for heavy lures, it will actually make reeling heavier. If they feel too much resistsnce its probably because they ate casting huge lures with tiny reels and are overloading them. The only downside if light rotor is that if u tighten the drag and overload the reel the rotor can just snap. But as long as u dont break it, it will SAVE you your energy in all cases

Victor my guess is the gear speed has a bit to do with fatigue. I know that when I was buying a reel for a Muskie rod I looked at an 8:3:1 gear speed on the reel and I read that becasue it is so fast, it actually make the bait harder to move through the water due to resistance. I ended up getting a lower gear just to help with fatigue@@ifishcatfish

@mildmanneredmercifulmouse1839
@mildmanneredmercifulmouse1839 7 месяцев назад
I totally agree that the reel either helps or hinders lure retrieve / action. However, action on the lure is a combined factor of reel, rod and line all working at the same time. That's where the term "a balanced rig" has meaning. When the reel matches the rod, with the correct line and lure type / size / style and you hit that sweet spot where all the "parts" of the system compliment with each other, it works wonders.
@ifishcatfish
@ifishcatfish 7 месяцев назад
@@mildmanneredmercifulmouse1839 how can a reel ‘help’? In all cases u have to overcome the resistance of the lure plus resistance from spinning the rotor. In all cases, no exceptions. Think about that again.

its the same antireverse. U know... u can take it out and wipe it clean and it wont slip but the reel wont feel so nice and it wont last as long. My apologies. The question was related, so I replayed it to another comment. The jig itself does not create resistance, but it needs to be fished occasionally with the rod. both reels with fight a pike or zander with no problems, as those fish don't fight good like carp. The question is how do u fish. If u fish on the bottom and u watch it, then legalis will be enough and its so light i would prefer it. But if you are CASTING heavy lures for these fish, then i would go to stradic. It is the casting of heavy lures that kills the gears, and not the fish. U catch 2-3 fish per day, and they rarely pull much drag... But u cast these big lures hundreds of times per day and that wears out everything

if the rod is L power and u fish Saltwater, i would go with 2500 size because in saltwater it is very often u tangle with something big. And u don't want to retrieve 5-6 gram lure with 1000 size body (which is also in 2000 size reel). As far as models, if that is your price range, your choice is between Fuego and Nasci. I was just checking the prices online at a local shop. The Nasci 2500 FC 2021 is a bit less than 100 USD. If I want a lighter reel I have to double my budget and get a Vanford . There is a 60 grams difference in the same size. I have fished with a 4000 size Vanford of a friend of mine and I don't like it. We go together with the boat jigging for Zander(walleye in the USA), and I have tried the reel many times as I was thinking of buying one. It may be just me being picky(my friend likes the reel very much), but I finally bought the new Ultegra which is way smoother imho. In those days when I get 1 fish or none at all but I keep turning the handle all the time I don't want that "grindy sandy feeling" which you mentioned in one of your videos. Also a lot of people complain about the Vanford behavior when used in saltwater. I remember you said that it's a matter of luck with the Vanford - one is great and one is grindy. If I manage to find a good Vanford somewhere do you think it's worth spending more than twice money?
