Correction on the brakes - I misspoke: For F SPORT Handling and F SPORT Performance, composed braking arrives via opposed six-piston aluminum calipers and 15.74-inch front rotors. The opposed calipers are 2.4 pounds lighter than those used on the LS and LC. Thanks for watching!
Hi brother, just bought the car and on the same day till 1 week later i still encounter this jerking problem when i released the brakes or going to a stop..it shakes a lot and im believing its from the engine, happens frequently when the car is after parked, do you have the same problem?
Finally, you teased this a little while back and was waiting for this review. Amazing color, love the interior as well. People hating on the engine, but it's true everyone is downsizing. If your gonna trust anyone with the turbos might as well be lexus and toyota. Great job adding in the nighttime review as well!! 😁
I ended up getting a 500h fully loaded with Caviar/Red. Like it so far. Coming from a Lexus Sportcross (with Supra engine), so my only wants would be a sport+ mode to tighten up the suspension by 25-30%. Would have considered the PHEV if available in states, but since not, this is working fine. Tons of room. Like a little luxury space shuttle. Yeah, a launch mode in sport+ would have been nice, but kinda not "the Lexus way." On the other hand I can probably sell this in 3 years for 90% of what I paid for it, if the PHEV is compelling down the road. :)
Really like what Lexus did with the model. But also interested in new redesigned GX. When would you think we would start seeing images and hearing about the GX later in the year?
I still get surprised when I hear Lexus plans on being 100% electric in the US by 2030! That just doesn’t seem realistic to me tbh. Also hate the fake engine noise!
I leased an 2023 RX350 F Sport. Kind of wish I got the 500 now, but otherwise with all the technology it comes with, I am satisfied. Wish I got the Mark Levinson, but they didn't have any with the ML sound system. My cousin got the 500 H and he loves it. This is my 5th RX. Almost got a BMW X6, but the pricing is getting crazy. I had priced out an X6 with the 8 cyl engine and it was $112,000. I passed. However I do own a 2023 BMW 840i convertible, so I guess I have all my bases covered. The tech on the Lexus is world class.
Great Review Kirk I love the RX500h F-sport here is why No CVT, the Spindle body front nose works well with specific colours like black and that copper crest. As a Perfomance HEV it’s best work Lexus has done in years. Between 450h+ PHEV and 500h HEV to me it would a case of pricing.
I work at TMMC and built this. I'm in the paint dept and we only see about a dozen or so in the copper colour per shift , very unique. Most common fyi is 1L2 (silver)
No it’s not😂 First off you don’t buy a luxury car for fuel economy. In fact nobody does. If they did people would be whining about fuel economy in an x3m40i or MDX type s or gv80 or Durango SRT etc. except nobody is You care about fuel economy? Then don’t buy a luxury car LOL. Plain and simple. If you can afford a luxury car in the first place then you most certainly can afford the low fuel economy. It’s basic math
I agree with you on the RWD platform. Toyota/Lexus has plenty of money to make a RWD platform for the RX and other SUVS. This would attract so many more buyers that are looking for a sporty suv with decent performance and a RWD platform. For now, all of these customers are going for the x5 with similar performance but RWD
@@rightlanehog3151 they also have plenty of money to make a smallish, efficient i-6 turbo. I dont get why theyre still using the exact same engines as toyotas, but claim to be totally different. They say its for efficiency but you can easily get the same numbers from an i-6 with more power
I’ve learned so much from you that the manual doesn’t clearly explain. Thanks for a great review! I just also found out the other day how to fix the issue where the seat settings won’t store. Move the seat all the way back, then all the way forward, lean the seat all the way down. It will allow you to store memory seat settings after those steps are performed. The car seems bulky yet a joy to drive. Wife is still getting used to its size.
I was originally going to wait for this vehicle but I leased an MDX Type S Advance instead. Lexus has way better fuel economy yet for 70K the 500h is missing too many features. No air suspension, no massaging seats, only offers dark interior, no V6, no 3rd row, etc. I do like that Copper Crest color though 😎.
I own a 2023 RX. Beautiful car! Very comfortable and smooth! Very happy with my purchase. Now, with that being said. The 4cyl across the whole RX line-up whether it’s turbo or hybrid or both; is NOT it. It just doesn’t sit well with me. I really miss the v6 RX.
Agreed as a owner of a 2015 Rx-350 with the 2GR-FE V6, who had the oppertunity to drive a NX Loaner last year with the T24A-FTS TurboI4, I prefer the 2GR-FE altogether.
Yeah, the V6 in this would have been magical. But it's understandable as the industry migrates to smaller engines and hybrids, it's the way of the world. I got a 500H in Caviar/red. Only funk was going up a hill with the 4 cylinder, kinda weird in sport mode.
Why wouldn’t you just get the Toyota version of those powertrains? Besides if you care about fuel efficiency why are you even shopping for a luxury car?😂 because most people who can afford one can most certainly afford the low fuel economy. It’s basic math Besides if you want Lexus customer service just service your Toyota at a Lexus dealer. Im doing that on mine and because of that I get to drive Lexus loaners at least in my dealer
Quite surprised the 500h reached 35-36 mpg. Could we have a non-FSP 500h though? The non-F Sport RXs just have a much better looking front end. I also don't think the RX really needed an FSP model 😅
I think I prefer the facelift of the BMW X5 plug-in hybrid which from what I hear is more confortable, offer truly electric ride with range similar to the 450+ (the facelift has more potent electric motors, 224 horsepower) and a 6 cylinder which we lost with this generation RX. In Switzerland this one cost more than 100k CHF and at this price point the sound of a 4 cylinder is a disappointment for me. I really like the sound of the V6 in my RX 450h
I really love this color as well. I think this generation looks better than the outgoing generation from every angle, especially considering the buyers they wish to attract: millenials. The interior is very sleek, wish there wasn't so much gloss black like everyone else. I would like a 350h but with interest rates I'll probably be waiting a bit and then see what they will do with the lexus TX and the next GX.
I love this color. The black wheels ruin the look though. It just doesn't look premium in this get up. Why don't manufacturers offer wheel options within trims? The German makers do, but not the Japanese. Anything related to a 'sport' or 'performance' package is always blacked out everything which makes a car look cheap.
Beautiful car; well done Lexus! Makes me VERY happy seeing the spare tire! A true proper upgrade to the 450h. Can't wait to see how everything compares to the upcoming 450h+.
I am a current RX 450h F Sport owner. I am sad to see Lexus pretty much re-use all the cheap plastics setup and design for anything at or below driver's knee level. The new RX didn't get any bigger. If you are looking for a big Lexus SUV, I would recommend to wait for the new TX or GX instead.
I still have an RCF but we traded our new NX hybrid for a new Audi Q7 it only for the space but it handles better than all the RX and GX I test drove and has more interior design features like sunshades for all the rear windows including the back hatch bigger panoramic roof a lot more ambient lighting amazing AWD system and standard big break calipers with 22 “ inch wheels on Michelin Pilot sport all season tires . Not to mention the air ride suspension that can be raised and lowered and is adaptive to the road so it’s still super comfortable even with big wheels and can tow 8000lb.
This engine should have been for the base RX. The F-Sport should have the Lotus Emira 400hp engine derived from the Toyota 3.5L V6… and that is without any electrification! They want $70 large for a 2.4L V4 with a 6 speed automatic; nonsense! When these 2.4 and 2.5 liter Turbo V4 engines spin shake like a tractor. 6 speed automatics are what 4 speed automatics were 15-20 years: dated and inefficient. By the way your claim of 35mpg when driving gently is reported on your dash as 23mpg average; imagine you were not babying the throttle…! The old V6 with electrification is smoother and more efficient! Why don’t these family haulers, promoting safety, do not have active night view assist? Even as a stand alone option. Do you know how many people get into accidents with large sized wild animals every year? Toyota seems to be on a row with disappointing new vehicles lately (exception the Prius believe it or not!).
It beats, by a little bit, a 2014 Infiniti Q50S Hybrid, that I had. Anyway, the grille on the RX 350h is better looking, and I saved $10K. By the way, that color gets you compliments everywhere you go.
I think I am seeing a pattern here. Unless a car now has the "EV giggle" fast start, it is boring no matter how fast it gets to 0-60 or the good higher-end torque. The 500h clearly does not have the giggle even with all its front/rear motors with 6sp trans. Full EV have just changed our expectations of what a fast car is today.
@@thomas735 then get a Prius or Camry hybrid LOL. Those give you the ultimate luxury of fuel economy If you care about fuel economy you shouldn’t even be shopping in the luxury category
@Thomas nope fuel price concerned shoppers are a completely different demographic than luxury shoppers. To ghetto luxury buyers yes but not full on luxury buyers who want the absolute best.
Great review with a lot of very helpful observations! Thanks! I am especially interested to hear that the electric motors aren't providing all that much grunt when you floor it from a stop. Somehow I was expecting better "launch" acceleration than you experienced. So what was that vehicle that came into view from the right then turned left (16:41)? I can't tell if it was something exotic or not.
The lack of interior color choices really sucks for this amazing Copper Crest color. Lexus just wants to build cookie cutter black interior because it doesn't offend anyone. And black interiors suck in summer. They still have that annoying limitation that only allows you to pair certain interior to certain exterior color, meanwhile other brands are much more generous with options.
I had a 2013 GS with Cabernet interior. It got compliments every time someone sat in the vehicle. Unfortunately they changed to the brighter red in 2016.
I prefer the features and performance of the Acura MDX Type S over this Lexus. I also prefer the styling and size (interior space) of the MDX compared to Lexus. I do like the fact that Lexus has a touch screen, which is an advantage compared to the Acura MDX Type S.
This is a great vehicle for those who need to have big AND grand. And this seems to please in almost every way. Stylish and capable, adding a statement of elegance, grace and a reasonable level of performance. But, I definitely would pass on the Metallic Coral, or whatever they call that color.
Kirk you asked did Lexus do enough? how about reviewing the Mazda CX90 type S and CX-90 PHEV and comparing that line-up to the Lexus RX offerings - given the new CX-90, did Lexus do enough or are they falling farther behind?
I’ll answer that No they didn’t. Lexus is falling even further behind than expected. Heck they’re starting to join Infiniti on the risk of being irrelevant I see no reason to choose the RX over other rivals considering it’s nothing more than a dressed up rav4 / Camry suv
But the cx90 already drives better than the grand Highlander and Lexus tx. We don’t have to wait to make that judgement. It’s not like either the gh or tx will drive like an Acura MDX or a cx90 or even a heavy lifted CTR
$70k and sounds like a Chevy Cavalier. Glad someone will buy it, glad Honda/Acura & Mazda decided to use 6 cylinder engines so I’ll have something to buy next.
5:57 The cargo area for the previous gen RX uses a different methodology than the current gen and cannot be directly compared. The previous gen RX was measured from trunk floor to cargo cover instead of the entire trunk capacity that is more commonly used.
You’re welcome! There is an article on Autoblog that dives into this as the reviewer also didn’t think the RXs numbers looked right either. Odd for Lexus to deviate from a more common methodology but that’s what they did.
Interesting that Toyota has started with NiMH battery chemistry for some of its hybrid models. Less energy density than Li chemistry but both less expensive and more durable.
@@hamsterbrigade I think people overstate the safety risks associated with Li EVs. Li chemistry is less stable than NiMH but neither is anywhere near as likely to catch fire as an ICE vehicle. I've seen figures on the order of 15 fires per 100k registered EVs per year and ~1500 fires per 100k ICE vehicles. So I think the frequent hyping of battery fires is more anti-EV FUD than a legitimate concern.
I was loaned the RX350 on my last service call and i have to say i did not care for it. The transmission was lurchy that drove me nuts. That first shift from a stop always made your head lurch no matter what mode or how i modulated the throttle. It was as if Lexus made it specifically for indecisive old ppl who would start from a stop then pause because they are unsure and then decide to proceed. Dear god i was so ready to drop it off.
Don't know if you will get this as I am a few weeks posting after you did this review. Sorry for the length of it ahead of time. I really enjoy and have followed your channel for quite some time. As a 3 time RX 350 owner, I am pretty well versed in the RX 350. We went in for service on our 2020 RX 350 the other day and we were immediately approached about trading it in as it has such low mileage. Listened to the pitch. Wife said this is what I want if we would even consider trading. Salesman brought out a fully loaded model with the new engine. We told him we were not interested in the $8,000 worth of up grades over our current package. He kept pushing. He let us take it for test drive. It had the full panoramic sun roof, which we are in Florida and it was immediately obvious that much glass was like being in an oven even with the AC full blast. Again something we were not interested in. We were really looking for the hybrid and interested in driving one. Long story short. We liked our "old" 2020 much better. They only had a couple in inventory and they were spoken for. They did not know when the next shipment was coming allegedly. They also said they did not know when they would get any hybrids in. We could order one and go thru the whole process and if we didn't like it they would cancel everything when it came in but could not say when it would come in. There was a lot more that happened but will not go into it. Bottom line is a little disappointed with Lexus and we are long time Lexus owners and Toyota owners. Our other vehicle is a 2018 4 Runner that we love. They push the hybrids yet they don't have them and inventory was till to none in general. Interest rates blew us away as well. We were at Lexus of Winter Park which is where we have bought all our Lexus vehicles including years ago a 350 ES sedan. All have been great vehicles but the dealership seems to be hurting. The overall air of luxury and and a step above their competitors is gone. I could have just as easily been at the Toyota dealer we take our 4Runner to which is over in Leesburg. At least they are honest and upfront on their status with their inventory and no pressure on sales. I know you used to sell Lexus and you are based in Florida. Just FYI. Still like the Toyota/Lexus products but and I know pandemic, state of the economy, etc, etc, etc, etc, they need to stop teasing us until they actually have the product available to the public. Maybe you could put a bug in their ears, since you have contacts..... Thanks for listening if you see this.
I gives me hope for the future that a young guy like you would turn off the "pro active driver assist" feature. I guess people want that stuff or the manufacturers wouldn't build them. In my opinion worthless if not down right dangerous. Maybe more people will think like you and that will stop. I also don't get the uncovered panoramic roof. Otherwise a nice looking car.
So you're buying just an engine and nothing else? Everyone is going to four-cylinders and then no engine on this size/type of vehicle. Volvo did years ago and most European high-end cars sell mostly 4 cylinders at this size and price point.
The color is superb, seeing it once and feel in love so attractive. While I love what Lexus did here in terms of performance the price is just too high, this should have been similarly priced to compete strong with the GV70. I love both suvs but Genesis is truly onto something
For this a RX hybrid. Over a 60k or 70k 😂😂😂. It’s not worth. Yea it’s reliable blah blah blah 😒 But who’s gonna buy a 70k for a hybrid crossover I’m Infiniti QX60 autograph instead
Agreed. I’d honestly rank the qx60 higher than any RX right now. And I hate to say this but id also put the xt6 above the RX because it has a nicer look no more leather and world trim inside and it has super cruise
A pass. 500h drivetrain just seems like a solution that did not meet expectations. And a lot added complexity over a 350h for so little perceived performance and the loss of the high MPG. And those short, low rev shift points, I can hear the engineer saying, but it is more efficientl vs a higher RPM shift. True, but why the 500h in the first place vs a 350h/450h with none?
That doesn't help fuel economy and overall carbon footprint that Toyota/Lexus is trying to reduce. That's the reason the 8s are going to 6s in the bigger vehicles and 6s to 4s in mid sized. Eventually, there will be few engines and those remaining may be 4s or range extenders.
Am I the only one who thinks this color is awful? It looks like someone drank pepto bismol and then puked. To answer everyone’s question - yes, I have seen it in person at Lexus of Richmond.
This is the color of money - a new shiny penny haha - I love it. But I respect your tastes. Luckily there are plenty of great RX colors like Nori Green, Iridium, Grecian water, etc.
