Can you daily drive the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata? How about a road trip? How about when the weather is messy and you can't put the convertible top down? The Miata is almost a perfect top down roadster that loves a curvy road as much as the track....but what if you need it to be your primary car?
Seat comfort, steering comfort, cabin noise, six gear cruising and passing, headrest speaker phone calls, fuel economy....when the top is up, and its raining, these aspects become even more important.
We take the Miata Club trim level, with the BBS wheel, Recaro seats, and Brembo brake package on our 111 mile highway test, to measure comfort, trip practicality and fuel economy

Would you or do you daily a Miata? How about road tripping? When you make a legendary uncompromised top down roadster, some sacrifices need to be made. Still fun to drive even in the rain with the top up, but it does need a great road the highway or the typical commute cannot provide.

I’ve been driving mine as a daily for 8 years or so. What doesn’t fit in the boot I have delivered or I borrow a mates Ute.

I recently picked up a 2024 ND3 Miata Club soft top and it’s my daily driver and road trip car! I have a boot-bag on order that allows you to strap a large travel bag to the exterior of the truck to basically double your cargo capacity and we’ll be using it for a few roadtrips this coming year and I can’t wait!!! The gas mileage is great, the engine has proven itself very reliable over the years and I have no regrets getting this ND Miata as my daily driver. I live in North Carolina so I don’t have to worry about winter driving situations where there would be snow or salted roads and the need for winter tires.

Top up in the rain/cold were always some of my favorite Miata drives. The seat heaters and HVAC are powerful (good for top down in the cold also) so it’s super cozy, rear glass with defroster and everything just works as it should. Never had any hesitation driving my ND in foul weather.

I just got my 2023 MX-5 RF GT today for a steal since the local dealer was clearing out their 2023 stock to get 2024 stock in! Surprisingly I also come from a 2016 Mazda 3 that I still own and will continue to own because of its wonderful handling and superb fuel economy of about 40mpg on the freeways. :) I somehow managed to drive 30 miles on the freeway with this manual after more than a decade! Looking forward to seeing how my manual shifting skills are going to be in the long term.

I’ve rented from Turo, two 2021 Grand Touring 6 speeds, one an RF and one a soft top, at different times, and to my amazement I think the soft top was quieter by a slight margin, although I had each one for only a couple of days. The RF though more durable had an echo boomy sound where the soft top seemed to absorb the noise. I’m not an expert but that was my experience. I’m now looking to buy a soft top, it’s a true convertible whereas the RF is a Targa and a lot of view is cut off and has wind buffeting on the freeway. ✌️

Thanks for watching and providing that assessment. I could see the hard top being more reflective and boomy. And I also would get the soft top!

I have one in the UK. Same year, same engine, trim looks similar. These are perfectly good for daily driving. I find noise levels at 70 in the dry are fine. Rain will add a lot of noise in any car. I found your comment about the steering feeling firm interesting. I find the same thing but other reviewers seem to ignore it. I'm not a fan of electric steering but you can't avoid it these days. My Fiat 124 spider was the same. Overall these are great cars and the little extras like blind spot monitoring, reversing cameras, heated rear glass window, heated door mirrors make the car easy to use as a daily. In the UK you have to check the spec carefully to make sure you get the extras you want.

Thanks for the video, I always wondered what the mx5 nd miata average on the highway as I'm interested to buy one and am mostly on highway. Also my highway speed is limited to 60mph, so I really wanted to see what this averages. Nice video, a lot of things covered like call quality, road noise, adaptive cruise, mpg and especially the sweet spot in sixth gear. Excellent video, keep up the good work. All the best

Good look or how did it go? You just kinda turn around and let gravity pull you in. And then it’s very comfortable. Maybe don’t need the Recaros and go for the top trim leather?

Great video, I was looking exactly for this. Planning on buying an ND2 2.0, but I can only find soft tops at decent prices. What I’m worried about is that the noise in the soft top would be unbearable on the highway and that I would be making a mistake by not waiting for an rf. If you could tell me your opinion on the matter, I’d greatly appreciate it!
@BeyondTheTestDrive
@BeyondTheTestDrive 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching and for the question. It really depends on how much highway driving you willl be doing. For a Miata I do think the soft top is the one to get. For short highway trip it’s fine. For longer trips the noise could get fatiguing. I have not driven an RF, and while it is probably quieter, it’s also not a quiet highway traveler. If you will be doing long highway trips neither one would be good. Hope that helps and let us know which way you go. We hope to be testing a 2024 Miata sometime later this spring.

Had a 2013 Mazda PRHT GT that I bought new. Used it as my daily driver for 5 years. Got sick of the relatively high rpm when cruising on the highway in 6th gear and it was LOUD. Judging from your video nothing has changed. Unfortunately. The car sounds loud and at 70mph it looked like you were almost at 3,000 rpm. Very fatiguing after driving for awhile on the highway.
@BeyondTheTestDrive
@BeyondTheTestDrive 2 месяца назад
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Yea, it is not really for long highway trips. But for passing you don’t ever need to down shift so there’s that. We’ll have an RF here on the channel pretty soon so we’ll see if that does any better for traveling. For short trips I was fine with the soft top. Those sunny days make it all worth while. We are also testing a Toyota GR86 this week. A little surprised by how loud that is on the highway. Thanks again.

OEM tires? How are they in the rain?
@BeyondTheTestDrive
@BeyondTheTestDrive 8 месяцев назад
These, as you would expect, were ok in the rain. The car is very light so easy to break it loose and hydroplane on the all seasons. But no worse than some OEMs on even heavier cars. Thanks for watching!

Guys I just bought my first mx5 and it was even better than I expected. Just do it, forget the second car life's about compromise To put it better, you don't get this type of fun on public roads without compromise. I literally keep my steering wheel in a position which makes it harder to get in and out... its all worth it once you turn the key! 😂

I would disagree with you there. A manual is a lot more fun to drive and if you treat it nicely maintenance isn't more than an automatic. Lots of people still buy manuals.

Daily driving a manual car is a bad idea in what sense? Yes it’s more “work” if you’re stuck in stop and go traffic, but it’s so worth it! You can easy get over 100,000 miles on a factory clutch and with the crap CVTs they’re putting in almost everything these days, I’ll gladly drive my manual 6 speed Miata, just as Mazda and God intended!

What the hell are you talking about 🤣? Bad idea? That's news to me and I've been driving a manual Golf for 9 years. Just say you don't prefer driving manual. No need to say it's a "bad idea" like you speak for every driver.

I daily drive my RF ND2. Twice a week I drive about two and a half hours a day. I have a second set of winter tires with Bilzzak tires which significantly increase the safety and confidence driving in winter, however, the ride is way more harsh than when I am on the Potenza summer sport tires. My car has the Bilstein shocks from the factory and honestly, they are not too bad but the ride can be a bit bumpy as expected for a sports car that is lightweight and amazing when the roads are optimal. I also have a Borla catback aftermarket exhaust which is way deeper in tone but can be pretty mellow while cruising easy on the throttle. Pros: - The car looks amazing to start - Visibility is great - it is quick enough and the steering is of surgical precision. You can change lanes quickly and has all the driver's assisting tech: blindspot monitors, a backup camera with an alarm for incoming unseen vehicles, etc. - I would say that for how small of a car it is, there is a lot of comfort and tech in the cabin which makes it ok for a modern daily driver. - for road trips, I have so far taken the car on 4 h highway trips and it is not that bad if the highway is good quality, it is noisy though. Highway gas mileage cruising at 80 mph can be around 34 mpg. Once you hit twisty country roads it makes up for the highway. - In winter, the cabin heats up pretty quickly given the small size and the heated seats work perfectly. - Very nice Bose sound system - For being a stick gearbox, it is perfect, probably one of the best in the market. Cons: - The sun shields only move up and down which is very impractical, you can get very uncomfortable trying to not get blinded by the sun on your side windows. I guess this could get better if you get your windows tinted. - That being said, if you are planning to have this as your daily drive for commuting on highway and city poor quality roads, this car would not be ideal in the long run given the limited seat positions and adjustment, lack of lumbar support, stick gearbox; even being a perfect stick is not good for heavy traffic. It is doable if you really have the chance to enjoy the car on nice twisty roads or enjoy it with the top down on the weekends, but, I would not have it as a single do-it-all car. - The plastic on the panel in touch with your right knee starts feeling quite uncomfortable while driving the car for a long run, if this area was soft and padded it would be a great touch.
