While I discussed some individual stocks that I invest in with a small amount of "play money," the best financial move is to invest in diversified ETFs and funds with a good track record and low expense ratios. That means VTTSX and FXAIX (S&P 500 account offered through my employer). For others, that is VOO, VTI, or a host of other funds. Do your research!
John - great content. Subscribed. Can you upload a video sharing your current gross salary thus far and what you anticipate hitting for fiscal year 23’. 👍
Hey John, glad to hear things are going well. I am a sophomore in undergrad looking into different career paths. I was wondering if you could briefly answer why u chose PA over MD or any other career interests you may have had? I like how you talk about your finances and you seem to be in a good position financially which is definitely a life long goal for me. In terms of career path, don’t you feel like MD may be more fulfilling because of the greater autonomy? I would love to hear your opinion
It's great to be researching this information early! I chose to be a PA over staying in EMS and becoming a paramedic. If you want to be a physician, I encourage anyone to hit the books and do what is needed to get there. I love what I do and feel I have plenty of autonomy in the ER, a good work-life balance, and a healthy salary. I have a PA vs. MD video on my channel and other PAs and docs explaining their reasoning. I would try to see both careers in action via shadowing and see which one suits you more.
Back on all the grinds! Fitness, work, RU-vid and relationships all at full-speed. I will talk about side hustles for PAs as a whole in the future. Thank you so much for watching and for the comment :)
Hey John! Congratulations on your new job btw. What’s your new work hours will be for the pay increase? Will you have a work life balance? Thanks for the update on your financial goals.
I will have a similar work schedule of 140 hours/month. I work 10-hour shifts, which means 3 to 4 shifts a week. I will work one weekend a month. This schedule allows for a good amount of personal time/days off and the ability to work on this YT channel. Thanks for your comments :)
Another great video! Applying to PA school within the next year and your advice has been some of the best John! Whether its finances, personal investments, or how to be a great PA I always take away something valuable from each video!
When you're hitting the books, you'll need a pick me up! I remember watching "PA Life" on RU-vid a lot. He was moreso active about four years ago. My hopes were to be a similar resource.
If the ultimate goal is medical school and becoming a physician, you should NOT* go to PA school. You will only delay your MD/DO by 3-4 years and accrue an additional 100-150K of debt.
Many pay through with loans or family support unless you happen to have extensive savings beforehand. You shouldn't rely on holding a real job during PA school since the program sucks up so much of your time and any remaining time you have you'll want to be studying or resting. You may find tutoring gigs or other gig work (think Uber?), which can maybe help you with some small expenses depending on your area.
This is a complex legal/business question and likely depends on your location. You will also have to deal with IT/medical records, marketing, billing processes, payroll, scheduling, compliance with healthcare privacy/workplace laws, and various other large-scale problems to make such an organization operate in the healthcare space. If you have a consenting supervising physician and employees, I don't see why you couldn't *start* such a venture. Whether it will be successful is another question, though.
