We do a complete docu-review on the new 2023 Nissan Z which includes interviews with the creators, and engineers. We also detail the technical changes, and improvements, then drive the car flat out comparing it to the 370Z. This is the story of one of the most affordable last generation rear-wheel-drive sports cars equipped with a manual transmission.
Other cars to consider, are Toyota Supra, Ford Mustang, BMW M2, Toyota GR86, and Mazda Miata.

Even as a self-proclaimed Nissan hater, seeing the careful consideration that went into this Z is something that brings me tremendous joy. The world we knew is sunsetting, that is unavoidable. The next generation of driving may be awful, or it may just be wonderful in its own way, only time will tell. But for those of us who have been raised on the feeling of driving a well set up, connected sports car, one where every one of the senses is put to use to precisely move through space, the new Z is a triumph, despite its flaws. A massive congratulations to the engineers and designers that pushed to bring this car to market, especially at a tough time like this at Nissan. Here's to another few decades of modified Z's making trumpet sounds down the street at 2am.

Problem is, it is ultimately from a brand that never recovered from the GFC, and is owned by Renault group - which means no matter how good the car is, you have to deal with some of the worst after sales support in the world if you buy one.

I know that you will deliver a better product than the media giants. They don't care about quality. They don't care about every detail that goes into the development, engineering, and manufacturing of these works of art. They only care about being first. You focus on the details within the art, that the car manufacturers have made.

Loved the interview with the designers/engineers and how you tied back into it at the end, mentioning how they’ve experienced the definition of “sports car” changing over time. @mr.butterworth4216
@mr.butterworth4216 2 года назад
The definition of “sports car” doesn’t change however. People only pervert the concept, and twist it around ideas that don’t fit that definition, just so they can say “sports car”. Today’s Z is really just a sports coupe - one of many on the market, which dilutes the car greatly. It’s odd how many people think this car is somehow groundbreaking.
@itsdefinitelynotdave
@itsdefinitelynotdave 2 года назад
@Mr. Butterworth I appreciate the correction. The definition has not changed, but what people are willing to live with has. I am happy to see another Japanese, rear wheel drive coupe (with a stick) on the market, even if it is diluted. I think the hype around this car is partly due to the Japanese coupe renaissance we're experiencing, and partly because it came from Nissan. It's one of their more exciting products in recent memory.

Nissan did a great job on this "Z". They took the old bones of the old 350/370 and improved everything. Power, low end torque, steering, rear differential, and of course styling. Offered it from the beginning with a manual and a better front suspension than the Supra, at thousands of dollars less. A real winner.
@sigmaprojects

It's going to really be interesting to see if the sales work out. Since Nissan said 40K MSRP base, which is still the 400hp motor, while Supra base is 43K, but with the 4 cylinder and still no stick.
@markmiller3279
@markmiller3279 2 года назад
@@sigmaprojects I think it will totally wreck Supra sales. However, Toyota got away fairly cheaply on that project, so it may not matter much. I'm not entirely sold on the Z's retro styling, but think the Supra is just plain ugly and overstyled. At least the Z looks consistently retro.
@sigmaprojects
@sigmaprojects 2 года назад
@@markmiller3279 I think both look pretty good, especially in person. My only gripe about the Supra's styling is that it looks way too close to an Alfa Romeo with its proportions, like if it had the Alfa triangle nose at that pointed area everyone would instantly think it's a new Alfa 8C. I just have a hard time seeing the Japanese DNA. The FT-1 at least had the proportions of a Supra so it was that bit recognizable. Time will tell if Nissan crushes Supra sales.

This is without a doubt the absolute best video review of this car on all of RU-vid. Thank you. Please never stop making these videos. You guys are the "goats" of youtube car reviews. Iv watched alot of reviews. Unlike alot of those videos, your videos have soul. Their the most informative and easy to digest videos I'v seen. They are pretty damn entertaining too, Patagonia jackets and all.👍

As a car guy who sold Nissan's for a living in the 90s (retired now) as well as owned several ,I'd like to share a few observations. As much as I loved the 90s 300ZX, which is my favorite , yet detested the 350 Z , I am impressed with the way the new one came out . Nissan took some chances still offering a manual , and some edgy styling details. IF Dealers don't rip off buyers with big markups , and IF Nissan can get production out smoothly with minimal supply chain hold-ups , this may be a breakout hit similar to the original Z's of the 70s . People are tired of lame ass , quirky , overpriced sports cars that don't handle all that well and are overly complicated! Good review , thanks.

Re: Conclusions about having cars faster, but less connected. This has been my exact feelings on modern cars, with the exception of the new GR86 / BRZ. After driving one around for a few weeks back to back with the new WRX (which is an improvement on the VA, but overall still *fine*), the 86 is an absolute blast, and I wish more manufacturers would listen to these comments. I'd love to hear some notes comparing the two.

You guys have knocked this video out of the park. Bravo. I bought a 370Z figuring it wasn't worth waiting, I stand by that decision, and I'm really not that interested in the Z as a result. But hearing how Nissan's old guard have tamed some of the rough edges from the 370Z and put so much love into this car as part of a lifelong journey warms my heart and tickles my engineering gland at the same time. I wish it every success as a true driver's car.

One of the reasons why I love this channel is you guys don't just do basic reviews, you make films. There is an element of art and style that goes even into the shortest of videos. I don't think Nissan or Polyphony Digital could have done a better job. Now I wait to test drive one or get my hands on one. The tail lights remind me so much of the 300ZX and there are so many elements that pay homage to each generation of Z car. As much as I dislike the sound of the VQ series at times, there aren't many cars outside of Porsches you can bang off the rev limiter, manual or auto, that take it and take it gracefully giving you every ounce of thrill you desire. Keep it up guys, keep it up. You sold me for sure. Now to just get my wife onboard but I'm sure she will be once we can test drive one together.

By far my favorite RU-vid car channel! You continue to raise the bar with cinematography, sound, and visuals. I love how you breakdown the history and show the passion for what car manufacturers still do for us diehards. I look forward to more videos like this. You guys do the best job detailing the mechanical aspects of the cars you review. I appreciate the good, the bad, and the ugly perspectives. Plus I dig the sense of humor and entertainment you provide along the way. You should think about “on the road series” of some private owner reviews where you get to drive and share the passion of your viewers as well. By far you would to the best job in showcasing not only cars provided to you by manufacturers but also car enthusiasts and collectors. Great job! Look forward to the next one.

I loved the conclusion. So many have confused the definition of a sports car with 60 and 1/4 mile times, when that couldn't be further from the truth. Where do you go with sports cars when EVs can decimate everything, or a 2L Accord can gap most "sporty" cars? You have to lean into what made sports cars great, which is the connection and the experience. It's taking it down a country road on a Sunday afternoon and just enjoying the drive, not worrying about how fast you get from red light to red light on a strip. It's not always about pure speed and I hate that we've gotten so far away from that.
@pleasedontwatchthese9593
@pleasedontwatchthese9593 2 года назад
But if those other cars offer that and better performance why would I go for less?
@PsychoCPU
@PsychoCPU 2 года назад
@@pleasedontwatchthese9593 Well, Miele vacuums offer everything a Dyson does with better performance, why doesn't everyone just by Miele vacuums? Just because something is technically better doesn't make it more desirable. Low to mid-range EVs like the model 3 or the base Mustang offer great straight line speed and good range, but sacrifice handling dynamics and performance. If you want to have brakes big enough that they don't overheat and fade after a couple hard stops or suspension that doesn't body roll over 5 degrees in a sharp corner, than you're gonna have to shell out for the performance variants, which are quite expensive. Not to mention, I could take this Z, or any similar sports car, to a track day and run it off and on all day long. If I took a Tesla I'd get about an hour of performance driving before it was both too hot and too discharged. If I took an Accord the brakes would be toast and I would probably be nauseous from the angular momentum of the body roll. Anything can become a performance vehicle, but what makes a car sporty and enjoyable isn't just power and speed. My most enjoyable car to drive over the last 25 years was a 91 240sx that had an LSD-swapped rear diff. Even after tuning it only made like 175Whp, but I could track that thing all day and never be dissatisfied. The Model 3 I tracked at an event in Atlanta on the other hand was fun for the first 10 minutes and then quickly became exhausting and disappointing when the battery started getting hot so it pulled power and the brakes became soggy sponges. It's all just perception, but for me, enjoyment in driving comes from the entire experience, not just the butterflies from acceleration.

For anyone bitching about this car: We are in the last days of manual input vehicles. Basically from here on out we’re getting hybrids and EVs and stuff that disconnects the driver from the machine. Sure, it’s not perfect, but you’ll miss stuff like this in a decade when everything offered is a boring hybrid - probably with a cvt. Enjoy these last days.
