Is this the purr-fect electric supermini?
If you're not familiar with Ora - and it's entirely forgivable if you're not - then it's a new car brand from China that's part of Great Wall, the same company that a few years ago brought us the Steed pickup truck.
The intriguingly named Funky Cat is the firm's first offering in the UK, and it's an all-electric five-door supermini with a focus very much on style. It'll cost you around £32,000, and its 169bhp electric motor is fed by a 45kWh battery that'll rapid charge at speeds up to 64kW, with a full charge earning you an official WLTP range figure of 193 miles.
In this CarGurus UK video review, Vicky Parrott assesses Ora's new offering in a variety of areas, such as practicality, quality, technology, affordability, and of course, what it's like to drive.
Read our full written review of the Ora Funky Cat here: www.cargurus.c...
Pros
Individual styling inside and out
Bags of luxury kit
Genuinely impressive build quality
Cons
Tiny boot
Driving experience is very average
Not cheap compared with some very talented rivals
The CarGurus verdict
The Ora Funky Cat is an intriguing proposition. It looks interesting, feels classy inside and has impressive tech and passenger space. But for every win that the Ora delivers, it seems to also serve up a huge flaw. Like having loads of rear passenger space but a tiny boot, loads of comfort equipment but no heated seats, and high-end tech but a touchscreen that’s a total pain to use when driving.
In truth, Ora isn’t expecting to sell a lot of Funky Cats, with estimates for sales at a middling 5000 per year. Its purpose, really, is to try and earn brand awareness amongst UK buyers, and to cement the brand as a more premium proposition rather than a budget offering that many may assume would be the case. Overall, we suspect it’ll achieve that, and we also suspect that it won’t be long before Ora does start to disrupt the established European car makers. But, in the context of the many rival electric cars that you can get for the same money, the Ora Funky Cat is a long way off the best or most recommendable option of its peers.

Excellent review once again - just something very 'honest' about Vicky's reviews, you just trust what she says..I''ll never be in the market for this type of car, but will gladly watch all her reviews, so I can pass on the knowledge should any of my 'non-car' friends ask me!

I agree entirely. No rear wiper, tiny boot, undersized battery & high price kill it for me. The interior looks good & if the MG4 had this interior it would be far better than it is. Also, no sunroof as std or as an option on a top spec car!! No heated seats / steering wheel is bonkers for an EV - should be std fit on all EV's to avoid the use of the main heater which hurts the range. The spec on this car is all over the place which proves that Ora does not know the UK market. That said you could argue VW don't either because of their infotainment / Haptic button debacle. Last but not least - Funky Cat. Really? What were the marketing dept smoking when they came up with that name. There's still nowhere near where I live to view & test drive the car so I have already dismissed it from a list of possibles as our first EV.

@@wcrash9361 Maybe in your country but in the Ora Cat on sale in the UK (as tested in this video by a UK channel) has the smaller battery (no long range option) & at the moment we only get one version - The Edition, & I don't care who designed it. It's not a design that appeals to me because it is too feminine. The Cat is not a car designed for the EU market. It is a car designed for the Chinese market being sold in the EU. There is a difference. No sun roof, no heated seats, no rear wiper etc as stated in the video, for £32k!! Far too expensive for what is on offer & being sold elsewhere for £15k. The Mg4 is not without its faults either & not a car I would consider at the moment because it is built to a price & it shows in the interior quality. The MG4 sells on price (SE std range model) but the top spec Trophy is £32K so not cheap either & too expensive for what is on offer.

@@colingoode3702 well, go ahead for the Europe car probably you love which are sold more expensive, if you are affordable😂😂 The problem is not the price of ORA too expensive, it is the price of Europe car are too expensive. If you compare the price of VW ID and Tesla between China & Europe market. You need to complain why other Europe brand EV are so expensive 😂😂😂

Think the MG4 trumps this one Vicki for the price and size. I just do not understand why some manufacturers- Hyundai and Kia spring to mind that don’t have rear wipers. I couldn’t buy one without. I can see these cars weaving over the road as people try to find the fan and heating controls. Great review as always Vicki.

Many thanks for this review Vicky. It's a nice car without doubt but as you say there a just a few too many niggles to push it to the top of the pile in a now crowded market. I've mentioned in feedback to many recent reviews from channels that I'm not a fan of touch screen access to basic functions such as heater controls and this one looks to be a tad more of a pain than others. The lack of heated seats as you say could be a deal breaker for many if there are leather or faux leather materials, not many want to drive in long johns or thermals and a thick woolly in a car in the colder times. As you mention the back looks odd, more odd than the back of the MK1 Focus when it was first released but at least that had decent size rear lights. Many thanks for sharing an informative balance review.

Just became available in NZ. Price $42, 000 nz dollars after Govt. rebate. That is 22.000 UK pounds here,10,000 cheaper than UK price.!! Cheapest Ev in NZ. As a comparison a Peugeot e208 has a price of $59.365 NZ dollars after Govt. rebate.(Rebate usually $8600 dollars as a carrot to by an EV.)Ora Cat seems like a pretty good deal in NZ to me at $17000 dollars cheaper than e208.

Great review as always. The car has quite a boutique vibe so maybe it will sell to people who just love that. For GWM tho, that’s prob not a big enough market to make it worthwhile in isolation. However to make a splash, get noticed and establish the brand, it’s different enough to make that work. Interesting the tie-in with BMW as well and what their versions will look like.

This was too expensive but the lease deals have just been absolutely slashed by more than 50 percent. Business lease now c.180 a month with 2k upfront. Suspect that’s due to slow sales but makes it a much more compelling option !

ORA had the chance to be what MG reborn was in 2010’s and work there way up! But no they have released a car that’s seriously overpriced with severe limited range you can’t use it for mid or long distance driving and is not practical Have not seen 1 of these anywere! And we’re is the dealership network! IT DOESN’T HAVE POTENTIAL

Just bought it a few months. Couldn't have a fun driving in a raining day as fans can't working properly for all windows, especially front window and rear window. I put full power on setup temperature at 21. My front window was blur very badly for over 10mins. My rear window wasn't clear at all the time. Maybe I didn't done correctly. If you or someone could have a video to teach how to use this car in very bad weather condition, that will be more help. Moreover, I still don't know how to open my front cover to top up my screen water. 😮‍💨 can anyone tell me where the bottom is for opening the front cover to top-up the front window screen water ?😮‍💨😮‍💨🤔🤔

INDICATORS The indicators usually turn OFF automatically as you level out but sometimes they don't and you CANNOT TURN THEM OFF. It has taken me half a mile of wiggling the lever to get them OFF with me indicating RIGHT LEFT and RIGHT again. Usually being resolved by turning again or stopping and turning the steering wheel so the car thinks I've finished turning. Its actually dangerous and should be illegal by BSI.

The two-colour dashboard makes a nice change from the usual boring grey (plastic or faux leather) which is dull, dull, dull. But then touch screen instead of buttons is bad enough , but if the icons are small I would need reading glasses to see them, though I drive without glasses. Impossible situation.

Were do these manufacturers get the prices from for their EVs? I know batteries are expensive but electric motors come in quite cheap. But one of my biggest complaint about EVs is having to lug around half the weight of the vehicle in 'dead' batteries while you search for a 'blood transfusion' to journey on for another 150 miles.

Mmmm, I don’t think the Ora’s Funky Cat is for me, too many quirky software issues, too expensive and a car that doesn’t have a rear window washer wiper is most definitely not for me. What I want in a small EV ( under 4.5m in length) is a minimum 320mile range so I can charge at home 98.5% of the time, good adjustable drivers seat, EV to grid compatible, most frequently used controls as knobs/switches/buttons. All other fancy touch screen controls must be voice activated, as finding your way around a touch screen options can be a nightmare and more dangerous than using your mobile phone when driving. I like lots of useful storage pockets and auto folding door mirrors. Price between £20k -£23k and dropping year on year. I currently have a Zoe GT line R135 50kWh rapid charge, had it for 3 years and it serves me incredibly well. Yes it has some things that need improving, so in 2 years time I will be looking for a replacement, and by the way nobody seems to mention ‘cost to change’ when referring to the hurdle of buying EV’s my Zoe was £23k ‘cost to change’ and if in two years time I can get £10k for it then a replacement EV should cost me about £13k.

The packaging is an odd choice. Masses of headroom, so they could have shifted the driving position more 'cuv / van' like, thus moving the front seats forward, the back seats forward and then the boot wouldn't be utterly useless for, for example, a mum with a pram. Also, try telling people what car you drive and you'll just sound like a total idiot. So, most rational humans would just get something else, like a mini (or, let's be honest at 30k a Fiesta ST).
