Simply wow! Side by side measurements and observations on the few available mid-priced home theatre projectors. No time wasted clicking through menu options or parroting manufacturers specs. Fantastic! Would have been interesting to add the LS12000 to the mix. For those willing to stretch their budget, it is the last stop on the way to crazy town. (JVC) Only one point in the review gives me pause, and that is the unbelievably high contrast measurement for the LS11000. Other than that, everything else aligns with past measurements. Great work.
@TheHookUp
@TheHookUp Год назад
The reason I didn't include the LS12000 is that it's difficult for consumers to actually buy it. Epson intends the LS12000 to be an "integrator" product, like the 6050 was, so you need to use a home theater installer to purchase it.
@Lafiro
@Lafiro Год назад
What do you honestly think of the LS12000 though? I’m in the market for a 83” or so OLED but at the same time it would be great to have a single projector handle 2 separate theater rooms of my home. One being a two car garage and the other the basement. I think a projector at that price range and it’s claimed specs would do me better for theater purposes. What do you all think? I have the ability to buy it but have no idea about it compared to anything in this video. And btw, excellent content!
@TheHookUp
@TheHookUp Год назад
@@Lafiro Do you mean you would be moving the LS12000 back and forth between the two rooms? I don't think you'd want to do that, it's huge and heavy.
@Lafiro

@@TheHookUp it’s the only way to spend $2-6k for something good enough to cover both locations. Outdoor insulated and finished two car garage during the warmer months and then to the basement for the rest of the year. Else I have to look at a tv or so for the basement theater room and a more basic projector for the garage and deal with not ever being able to watch something with a 1 garage door open during the day - at least that was the majority of the experience with a 500 ansi lumens projector I tested. .edit Now I’m looking at either the 5000 or 6000es from Sony and call it a day. I’m receiving a jmgo ultra and I know it ain’t like the $3k+ projectors from Epson and Sony and JVC, but I wonder how good it will actually be? Especially for that once a year occasion I may want to take it to my cousins house and project on his house outdoors on his few acres of privacy. Decisions decisions.

I absolutely love the thoroughness of your reviews! You are the Project Farm of the smart home / video space, no doubt about it. The one nit-pick I'd have is the labeling of these low-end to mid-range projectors as "premium" or "high-end". The fact that neither Sony nor JVC made a showing and Epson was the top dog is a great illustration of that. "True" high-end home theater projectors START at $5,500 and very quickly go up from there. And I do say "start" because those people in the rarified range of ultra high end home theaters (the ones that paid $75k for THX Home Cinema certification) will scoff at any projector under the $35k range. So yeah, these are great projectors and the Epson laser hits the point where anything above it will have rapidly diminishing returns... but they aren't premium or high-end!
@TheHookUp
@TheHookUp Год назад
I think I would call those "Ultra Premium" or "Prosumer" options. $4000 for the LS11000 + $1000-2000 for a screen is still a very large investment for the vast majority of people, especially when an 85" TV from Best Buy is in the $1500 range these days. One other consideration is that these are likely the most premium projectors I'll ever do a review on. Above this price point it's all going to come down to preference and I'd tell anyone looking to spend $10,000+ on a projector that they need to go in to a showroom and decide which image looks best to them instead of taking someone else's word for it.

Stellar review. I wish this came 4 months ago as I didn’t even know about the HT4550i. Ultimately, I’m very happy with my LS11000. As an aside, the existing integration for Epson picked it up in HA which meant all of my movie time automations were a breeze to update in NR. Much better than the IR blaster solution I needed for my previous projector. This might be a worthwhile mention on future reviews (HA compatibility).

Fun fact: Pixel shifting can be used on some cameras to get smaller sensors to record larger images. Some people developed firmware for older Canon EOS cameras that lets you record in higher resolutions and it uses the same technology. Just interesting to see the tech in use in so many different places. (You can get 5k out of cameras from 10 years ago, depending on how low you want the framerate lol)

Wow. Thank you. My 5050UB developed a panel issue after 3.5 years of use. I have a pink dot on my screen now permanently. (not on the screen itself) Mike from AVS is pretty sure it's the panel. It's been really tough to decide what I should replace it with, and if the LS11000 would be an improvement; a lot of people on Reddit seem to feel the 5050 is better overall but this was an absolute Harvard level thesis presentation on the comparison of these projectors. Now, I have to decide if I'm getting the 11000 or leaping to the 12000, but you helped me feel like I won't be making an expensive mistake with the 11000.

Very interesting comparison. To me, since I'm basically set on an Epson LS800 UST, it seems to indicate that the half-4K that does much like the 5050 in this comparo is a borderline non-issue, the 5050 seems to be able to keep up quite well on the sharpness front. I do wish Epson would put more focus on shutting their fans up, though. They seem to consistently shade higher on noise than most.

Hi! first off, thank you for making such amazing, in-depth content that NO OTHERS I have seen make. I need your expertise! I currently have an Epson 5050UB that is approximately 4.5 yrs old now and has definitely been through 2 lamps and I’m not sure but maybe even 3 lamps (?). I don’t remember. I know they all [projectors] have a useful lifespan. My Epson 5050UB I currently have is just now having its first issue, which is an iris problem, which apparently has no fix other than to unplug it and call a repair shop and have it fixed. I’m not even sure how much it would cost yet but I know I would have to pay $100 just to find out. Also, fortunately I have noticed absolutely zero burn-in or discoloration on the image so far. Here is my question: I am debating on even spending money to fix this one or just purchasing the newer LS11000. I use my projector all day and also watch movies on it all the time on it in the living room, on days off, and while I am a “cinemaphile” to a certain extent, I don’t currently have the luxury to have a dedicated theater room to even be that nit picky about options and drawbacks, etc. The Epson is just a superior workhorse in performance in my book in terms of flexibility of installation and performance, even if it sucks power like crazy and has a louder fan. It still puts out an amazing image. I have a horribly light controlled room and everything is washed out during the day to where I have to turn up the brightness to 60-80% to get a better picture. Am I better off holding onto the 5050UB and just getting it repaired or getting the LS11000? To add insult to injury, my SI matte white screen is also starting to wrinkle painfully noticeably, even after adjustments were made to tighten it were made, so I’ll also have to invest in a ALR screen or a gray one for a better image at all times of day as well. I won’t know the best one to get until I finally get my projector either repaired or replaced and get the swatch book delivered. I hear you need more lumens with ALR screens and there are problems with color sometimes. Also, because of next to no light control during the day, I need the brightness. I don’t want to spend the extra thousand on a LS12000 that you can only get at special places when I can just click buy now for the LS11000, especially since you said the differences weren’t THAT noticeable. I have never even used the 3D option on the 5050UB, so it’s either fix this one or get the new LS11000. What is your take on all this? Is the brightness of the LS11000 THAT much worse than the UB5050, keeping in mind that I will be purchasing a new gray or ALR screen regardless? Thanks for all your detailed info again!
@TheHookUp
@TheHookUp 4 месяца назад
Any reason you haven't considered a UST setup? In your situation a UST specific ALR screen will provide a much better image in both day and night viewing. If you want to stick with Epson the LS800 + ALR screen is about the same price as the LS11000, or you could go with a DLP option like the Formovie Theater or Nexigo Aurora Pro.

Great comparison! Personally I have the optoma UHD35STx and love it, but not sure it would compare with these? For anyone planning on gaming, I highly recommend optoma especially for their ultra low input lag when playing 1080p 120hz (if I’m not mistaken, I believe they actually go as high as 240hz on 1080p) but as you said we each have our own needs. It would be awesome if you would make a video showing HOW to professionally calibrate a projector for color and everything else, including what equipment we need, etc. I’ve been using projectors as my main TV for a decade now but have no idea how to calibrate beyond what looks good to my eyes.
@TheHookUp
@TheHookUp Год назад
Calibration is 60% expensive equipment and 40% art/skill/experience. I think for 99% of people it would be better to pay a calibrator $600-800 to come out and get it done rather than buying $5000 of software and equipment and spend months learning to use it.

@TheHookUp I hope you see and can answer this. The Optoma - UHZ50 is currently on sale for $1,499. That seems too good to pass, but really really want to know your thoughts. I currently have a theatre room with a Epson - Home Cinema 3700. It is great, but not having HDR is killing me because most of the movies I watch are HDR and I have to convert. Also the 1080 shows. Would you recommend the Optoma - UHZ50 for a dedicated theatre room with a celling mount for the discounted price? Or, if there is something else you would recommend I'd love to know what that is. I have a PS5 so I play games, watch movies, and watch sports/TV on the projector. I have a full sound system in the room so the speakers are not important.

The UHZ50 being $1499 is very confusing. You can see in this video, it doesn't compete at all at $2500, but it's only $200 more than the Mars Pro at the current price. I would say it's a very interesting option at the current sale price, especially given its very good input lag times.

This is a fantastic review! Much appreciate your efforts. I just recently upgraded from BenQ HT2050a to HT4550 and very happy with the decision so far. Only one concern is the black levels in really dark scenes, no concerns with bright scenes though. I am not seeing the super black images with 4550 though I can say the black is decent. How does it compare with LS11000 when it comes to really dark scenes? Also would used JVC Lcos models (nx5/7) really make a difference in black levels ? Thanks in advance
@justinbeamon6624

The JVC's are a totally different universe in black levels. They actually look black. The LS11000 has a better black floor than the HT4550i so it would be better and in his review he stated he could see the black bars more black than the scene, but the BenQ and others blended together. So the LS11000 will definitely be better, but an NX5/NX7 will be crazy good in blacks and overall image quality.

Thanks again!
@TheHookUp
@TheHookUp Год назад
The Formovie X5 is great and is definitely a better pick if you plan on using the built in speakers, but the Dangbei Mars Pro has a new firmware update that unlocks all the android 11 color management options (11 point white balance, RGBCMY tuning), so it could be calibrated. Since all the other projectors in this video were calibrated to d65 white point it would have been very hard to compare the X5 to them since it doesn't have a true color management system. That said, if you don't plan on getting your projector professionally calibrated and don't have the tools to do it yourself there isn't much of an advantage to having a CMS, so the X5 is probably still the better option.

I'm just very confused why you would want to spend $3000 on a projector that isn't made for what you want to use it for. Great comparison review and a timely one for me. I have narrowed down my future laser projector purchase to the the exact two "lifestyle" budget, laser projectors reviewed here. A few questions 1. There was a comment made about the HDR tone mapping on the JMGO being "extremely aggressive" making the images look like the SDR mapping on the other projectors. Is this a bad thing? Seems like that would make the images brighter than the usual HDR dimmed effect. 2. Of the 2 budget projectors compared it appears that the JMGO performed best in the most important categories of color space, accuracy brightness , contrast, sharpness and 3D efficiency than the Dangbei Mars Pro. (Overall brightness 3D mode is also important to me) But your overall recommendation was for the Mars Pro even mentioning that the Mars Pro's overall performance is 95% as good as the higher end BenQ 4550i projector. Unless i'm misunderstanding the validation of the metrics, i'm confused by the pick. Please help me understand why my bias based on the metrics is pushing me toward the JMGO . Is my conclusion more emotional than logical. 3. Given that either projector can be had for under $2000, price difference not being a factor, between the two "budget" projectors, would you still stand on the Mars Pro being the better performer and overall purchase. Thanks.
@TheHookUp
@TheHookUp Год назад
JMGO MSRP is basically twice the Mars Pro which is why it didn't get the overall recommendation. From an equal price standpoint the JMGO is the clear winner as long as you are not overly sensitive to laser speckle. Unfortunately you just missed the Mars Pro on sale for under $1200, but the JMGO is still on prime day sale ($350 off) which is likely the lowest we'll see it for a few months at least: amzn.to/3XMbuK1 I'd recommend picking it up and trying it out, if it turns out laser speckle is a problem for you, you can always return it in the 30 day window.

The ambient light in the room also has a huge effect on eye fatigue. In a completely light controlled room a tri-laser like the PX1 Pro is significantly too bright for prolonged viewing unless you adjust the laser power down. I watch my 65" OLED with soft white bias lighting behind it, and when I watch my AWOL LTV-3500 at night I dial the laser power down to 2 AND use bias lighting. When I'm watching the LTV-3500 on the 120" lenticular screen during the day I have it at laser power 10 with very little eye fatigue.
