The reason they moved everything to the side is the heat is sent out the back and if you ran their old models for extended periods of time on performance it destroyed the ports. The power port especially.

Should pack it in Aluminion/Metal, even if it's 1.5 kg heavier. One thing that's making the numpad working difficult - the acer nitro models have the same 'issue' - the 0 is small and does not span under the 1 and 2. So thumb-clicking is difficult and one should get used to middle finger action.

I was hoping that the release of these new laptops would drop the prices of older laptops but what I'm finding is that last year's laptops are at the same price while this year's are at least 50% more expensive. Definitely waiting until April or May if not later before I consider buying one of these.

I have two questions: - do this laptop has one M.2 port connected directly to CPU to get PCIe 5.0 support ? - the second question - can I replace DDR5 4800 for 6000 and the mainboard will run the XMP memory profile ? I will not play any game, the laptop will be used only for a typical IT work, I need powerfull CPU so I can choose the variant with RTX4050 or RTX4060 GPU, but the big screen with high refresh rate for me is extremely important.

Good review I think the 4080 versions will be the sweet spot as in the current high inflation economies both there in Europe and here in the states if one were to wait a few months before purchasing the prices will drop as I cannot fathom not just ASUS but all manufacturers will find it hard pressed to sell their inventories in this current market.

You mention 42dB for some 3D game. In which fan mode did it run? Was it at full GPU load?

Keep up the good work 10/10 for the video. This laptop is my top choice but there is one more option, Eluktronics mech 17 with liquid cooling. Asus is a bit better and nicer looking, but coal whine is a bit of worrying they say it might even go worse over time and Eluktronics has better cooling with the liquid cooler, what do you think? Appreciate your opinion.

Wanted to add on the screen options so far for 18inch models seems the options are limited by all manufacturers so am wondering if it is the case that simply put inventories are not there yet for the UDH and 240 hertz and above?

Just ordered one after days of watching reviews. I was leaning towards the Alienware M18 as I had the 2080ti equivalent of that a few years ago, but seems that’s been suffering from thermal throttling. This seems pretty awesome!

I bought the 16". Can't wait receiving it...arrival date is 20th of Feb...I choosed the 16" for the smaller size and better screen, though I hope cooling won't be worse as they packed the same stuff in a smaller chassis...We will see. Do you know if the 2x1Tb mirror raid 0 can be configured to have 2Tb of SSD? Not sure 1TB will be enough given the size of the games today :( that s pretty much the only point I hesitated when I compared it with the MSI, which comes packed with 64GB and 2TB SSD...but an even higher price tag :(

Display is not Nebula HDR on 18. Just Nebula. And I’m thinking it just for gaming, with this big screen size and low resolution. Not for text or pro work.

Please compare the 2 top spec scar 16 ad 18 ad also if possibe compare it with razer a 16 a 18 top spec. A also undervolted and overcloked , and factory performance of both 4. This would be my dream test. :))))

As always with gaming laptops, the 'best' comes at a very high price. The question of how much performance do you really need when older models are still very capable comes to mind. It always has been and always will be about finding that sweet spot of performance to price.

I can’t get hdr working with this on anything but video, so I don’t think it actually fully supports HDR. That said for an LCD it is beautiful.

You should probably do some fact checking before posting your videos... "Nebula HDR screen" means the MiniLED option for the Scar 16. Also, the Scar 16 can also get rtx 4090's, so it doesn't "top out" with the 4080.

I have same laptop 32.0 GB ram edition. Tested ton of games, only had problems with Star Citizen which is poorly optimized, on max setting 4k resolution it could run only on 50+ fps... Rest games runs minimum on 120+ fps. I only have 2 problems, but I think it is most of from software. Sometimes it makes static noises on battery and GPU switching system is not really good. At the end it is superb laptop, the sound is awesome, it even have bases, screen is nice. Build quality is very nice. I think it is best option for people who travel a lot.

Nice video, I just bought the Asus Rog Strix 17se (i9 12950hx and rtx3080ti and 32gb ddr5) 2 months ago I am so sad because of the very high temperature of the cpu when playing games, up to 100*C and of course the cpu reduces the frequency, I have in my 3DMark results from the first day I bought it, it was score CPU 16K and GPU 14K and now only CPU 13K, gpu itself. Check the CPU vent and the fan is clean. Anyone else had the Asus Rog Strix 17se and can run 3DMark to check the total score? thanks The Tech Chap nice video comparison

Mini LED displays arent necessarily a good thing for gaming. It can have some weird optical effects. Though an oled option is always welcome.

Nebula HDR, with mini led 1000 nits? I thought only scar 16 has those? The scar 18 only got the Nebula display up to 500 nits.

I am upgrading to scar 18 for sure, my current laptop has worst batterylife from all laptops + it does not have the specs i need since i am selling my desktop pc because i dont have use for it anymore... I want to replace my desktop with really good laptop. Why scar 18 you ask? Because in Finland its actually cheaper than 17, the 17 inch model is 350 euros more than the new scar 18 + the Nebula display is so damn nice...

I would like reviewers to analyze not only advantages but disadvantages over time to see / list hardware issues of every laptop review. As we are consumers we should always be aware of it and of course If it's worth paying for it according to the pricing. It seems to be an excellent choice but let's face it, not everything shines like gold.

If the 4080 in laptops manages to get close to 4090, the Strix G18 could be a better buy... It's just less flashy. I think the only 18-inch miniLED screen 40x0 device "released" at CES is Acer's new Predator Helios 18... this might be a better buy provided it is available and priced competitively. But this thing from Asus costs quite a lot more than the previous gen and yet it's not coming with higher speed RAM, just 4800MT/s, in most regions it's offered with just 2x16GB options without the 2x32GB this cost should entail, the storage is organised as a 2x1TB in most regions, without a 2x2TB let alone 2x4TB that was an option in some regions last gen... and this dual drive setup is done through RAID0, so a bit less safe in the long term than the competition that uses 2TB drives instead of a pair of ones... though, of course, the array gives the performance boost as well... Still, at this price point, in a laptop 4090 setup, one would expect at least 64GB memory config with 5600MT/s or more and 2x2TB RAID0 if they want to provide array of devices from the get-go.

there is something wrong with ur G23 multi score, only 25000, it should be between 30 and 32k. I asume that other benchmarks are below than it shoud be

3 x misinformation. 1. The 18 does NOT have a Nebula HDR display the HDR part of the name indicates Mini LED panel.. 18 has ROG Nebula display the 16 has the option of Nebula HDR display. 2. the 16 does not top out with the 4080, there is a 4090 option. 3. At 1:09 you list the specs for the 4090 laptop GPU having 24GB of VRAM, it doesn't, it only has 16GB..

Something is wrong with those Cinebench scores. My GT77 gets 27.5K if I disable 8 e cores so 16 cores total, and 33K (all stock no undervolt) out of the box. The Scar 18 in CPU only mode should be doing much better than 25K. Edit, your timespy makes no sense either, mine is 22.1. The reason I say this is because with Jarrod's testing, the Scar 18 easily matched the GT77, so something is amiss. You definitely had it in the highest performance mode?

This series should be called ROG Flamingo or ROG Macaw. Although I've been a PC person for the last 30+ years, I believe that when PC technology gets close to what Apple has been doing, like fanless designs, then we could call a series ROG Strix. I've been hoping for a jump to RISC for Windows and its entire ecosystem, maybe RISC-V will do the trick. A side benefit is that it will also help to _reduce_ world energy consumption.
