Today, we are talking about our bountiful harvest from 2023. How much food did we grow from our garden harvests and animals we raise here on our rural homestead? Well, as always, this is a yearly tradition to look back at the year and see how much fruit, vegetables, herbs, meat, and eggs we brought to feed the family. The truth is a bountiful harvest can be had from a very small space, and even though we do have a 38-acre homestead, well over half of the food we produced came from an area that is 2 acres or less in size, so you really can harvest a lot of food from a small space!

Dear Chris and Steph, Thank you again for a very instructive and informative video on what you have produced each of the last three years. The records you keep, the assessment of your needs for a family of four, and the end results of your labour provide excellent guidance for anyone working toward a level of self-sufficiency. As with all your videos, I am sure that many will find the guidance coming out of your experience very valuable. Sincerely, Larry Lewis London, Ontario.

Thank you, Larry, for all the kind words of encouragement! It is fun to keep track and see where we are with things, and its been impressive the last few years that we really have been tracking what we grow so much better. It's good to look into figuring out what you need to actually feed a person, let alone a family of 4, so we do hope others find it as interesting and informative as you do!

Amazing harvest. This is Canada. Shorter growing season, colder climate and a mere 2 acres with 3k+ Harvest and just TWO PEOPLE! Our position is rocky clay, nowhere to store food, Limited resources. We are pushing harder this year to grow something other than Cucumbers, Basil, Pumpkins and butternut squash. We will watch our fig and apple trees for growth.. None of our planted berry bushes did anything this year. Wild blueberries, black walnut and hickory nuts are here but you have to forage. We always watch your videos twice. View then rewatch to learn. Too much info. This is a good thing. It takes intelligent, dedicated people to walk the talk and talk the walk. Wish we were neighbors. Not that I want to shovel snow! Been there. Very inspiring. 🥰

The shoveling snow part sucks for sure lol. But right now we are getting freezing rain on top of snow! Thank you for all the great comments here, it's really interesting to document everything and just show that it can be done (granted, we do have more area to forage and raise sheep, but the bulk comes from a pretty small area).

I love your annual videos. Your poundage totals are incredible! We really had small numbers due to the big storm. You'll do much better with squash this year! Congrats on an incredible 2023 and cheers to 2024!!

It is fun to put these videos together at the end of the year and see how we did. We think it's good for people to understand how much food a typical North American eats vs how much food can be produced at home (it's always amazing!). Hope you have a great 2024 garden season as well (the unpredictable weather is certainly not helpful when it comes to growing a garden!)

Keep up the great job. I really like that you weigh your bounty.

Its addictive once you start. We will admit there are the odd days that a little bit comes in here and there without getting weighed, but we do try to be pretty diligent!

Don't forget to count the seeds you save. You would not believe the amount of money you save with seed saving. I totaled mine this year and the seeds amounted to $283.85! I honestly believe that if you can grow a pound of food per person per day for the garden, you are spot on. Add to that 1/2 lb per day per person for protein. That's what we shoot for and we continuously have left overs!!
@HickorycroftFarm
@HickorycroftFarm 7 месяцев назад
Excellent point about the seeds! We actually did a calculation (and a video for it) about calculating the amount of food you can produce in ten years of growing squash and only buying one seed package of each of the four species (to avoid crossing and still have variety), and it was staggering the money saved! Literally staggering! That's a good number per person per day. I think the big thing is understanding how much you need (which you do), and that is a part of growing food I don't think everyone thinks about, but it's so important if you are trying to take some control over what you eat and build some resilience.

Incredible year of harvest! That is very impressive for sure. You definitely deserve bragging rights. 🙌 Happy New Year! 🌺

It was a good year. And there were tons of things that didn't quite work out, or were failures, or just lots of weeds, and we still brought in a lot of food! It's always nice to have that data to show that you can grow a lot of food in whatever space you have available, though it does take some different thinking sometimes!

Oh. I so love the idea of weighing everything. We May have to try this. . Well done! Amazing!
@HickorycroftFarm
@HickorycroftFarm 7 месяцев назад
It is worthwhile to do; it really gives you a concrete picture of what works well, where you could improve, and what is not working. It also helps with looking at how much food you process and ultimately eat from the homestead in a year. We do feel that sometimes it is downplayed a little by some, but it's pretty important to have a rough idea, and well, it is great to have the raw data when you are making decisions on the homestead!

Being on 1/3 acre property witha house, i have rather limited space to grow. As you may know i grow in what little space im allowed to whilst simultainiously improving the asthetic of the land. i would love one day to be able to produce atleast 200lbs of fresh fruits veggies all in one season. Ill be super excited once i have my cattle trellis system finished. May we all have a bountiful 2024 season.

You will get there someday with it! You have lots of good plans and have made a lot of progress in growing food. It is always interesting to think back to when we first found you and see what you were up to, etc., and you have come a long way (and that is the best part is to keep building on what you do, skills, infrastructure, etc., it all adds up!)

Wow just wow, if you look at 1lb of herbs that is a huge amount but you had 10lb wow that’s amazing, here in the uk I have 6 chickens that free range my tiny garden (15ft x 20ft) and I rent two allotments (small strips of waste ground that is turned into plots) which cost me a fortune every year, you both are a total inspiration to grow much much more this year, unfortunately my tomatoes got blight very early in the year and I lost most of them, but hoping to do much better this year, so excited to see what you do with your amazing garden this year, keep up the amazing work and I really really look forward to more exciting videos, and a massive hello from Wiltshire in the uk, x

It sounds like you are well on your way to growing a lot of your own food, and that's fantastic! The herb numbers were interesting this year because your right 10 lbs of herbs is a lot of herbs! But it's good to have on hand, and it's been great this year being able to add them to so many recipes, dishes, and teas. We have some plans for 2024 but really are hoping to focus on just improving what we have (and expanding our fruit and berry production, too!). I know they are expensive, but the garden plots that you have are interesting. We have watched others who have plots, and it is encouraging that people do have that option (not something that's popular here in North America, though I know some cities do have similar ideas).

It's amazing how they are just "wild" (really escaped domestic apples), and though there is variation (i.e., not the same as normal apple clones), they are still very useful to have!

That's a very good number on the different products and weights. Imagine how much higher that weight would be if you also grew in a greenhouse aswell, 😉😉 just saying. Happy growing in 2024!

Oh, it's on the agenda! If we can extend some seasons on some things (the big one is the brassicas, beets, etc.), it would fill in some spaces we still have in our food production for sure! We have some garden plans for 2024, so we will see how they all pan out in the next few months!
@bettinah.7429

That is quite a number! Depending on land quality etc one can definitely “farm” 2 acres quite intensively.
@HickorycroftFarm

Exactly! There are always lots of factors to "factor in," lol, but it's true you can grow a lot in a relatively small space!

SQUASH IS Best when you use your seed! Meat total was outstanding! Your Total Food Produced is an inspiration! Was sorghum grown in your grain total?
@HickorycroftFarm
@HickorycroftFarm 7 месяцев назад
It was a really good year all around! It's nice to hear that because we do hope what we show is inspirational to others to try the same (which we know you do!). The sorghum was not actually in the total for the grains and we will be talking about that a bit in our plans for 2024.

Perfect and inspiring! I think we hit the 100 lbs of rabbits too. I know we eat a lot of it these days! haha!
@HickorycroftFarm
@HickorycroftFarm 7 месяцев назад
That is great! The rabbits are fantastic for small-scale production on so many levels. I have always loved poultry (birds in general), but I have to admit the rabbits are better from a small-scale meat production standpoint for sure!
