I’d say Nola’s season was around a C+. In the positive side, he showed that he was able to make meaningful adjustments regarding holding baserunners/his slide step and he made a mechanical adjustment that made his changeup way sharper and his fastball/sinker command look more like the 2022 Nola. He struggled commanding all of his pitches, especially his cutter. Lot more balls out of the hand than we’re used to seeing out of Nola last season. Fastball velocity was also a tick down overall. All in all, the adjustments he made in late September seemed to have brought him back on track. I still think he can win a cy young in the next 2-3 seasons. Maybe 2024 is the year for him. Regardless, he’s a workhorse. Going to give you 6 innings every fifth day. Gunna battle. Love Nola.

I definitely think this is a fair evaluation. The pitch clock adjustment he made + adding the slide step were the biggest factors in his late season surge. The cutter is definitely not his best pitch and mostly just something to mix in bs righties. I do think those adjustments will pay dividends moving forward as you said. Hopefully we get Even-Year Nola this year haha. I think the fastball velocity was pretty normal tbh tho - it was at 92.7 on average and he’s sat around that since 2018. It’s been consistently about 92.7-92.8mph.

Phils need a legitimate closer. There's talent out there. Are they actively wanting to sign someone to fill the closer's role?

Thanks for the support as always, Robert! They could definitely use someone there. As far as how I think the Phillies look at it: I think they feel okay without adding someone who is strictly the closer. I think they like the idea of mixing and matching based off of matchups and situations. And obviously availability. I also don’t think they feel the investment whether in terms of money or trade assets is worth giving up for a closer.
