January 4, 2023 is our Deaven's Gotcha Day! We began our adoption journey 2 years prior, so it still feels surreal that this day even happened. This video show the last meeting with the foster family and it does get emotional. Overall, we feel forever grateful to Deaven's foster family and so proud of how Deaven handled the entire transition.

I was so touched to see how the social workers were supporting foster mom. Trauma for everyone but a brighter future for the baby.

This brings back so many emotions! We have two wonderful and amazing grown children, both adopted from Korea, ages 27 and 26. They were 5 and 9 months old when they came home to us. I vividly remember the grief that hit about 48 hours later. There is nothing so heartbreaking as the cries from a grieving baby. If you aren't already doing this, I highly recommend ongoing professional family counseling from an adoption-competent therapist. It can help tremendously in the long-haul for everyone in the family. My best wishes to you!

I was adopted at 3 months old from S. Korea to a family in the United States. This advice is incredibly important. A family or adolescent therapist who specialises in adoption (bonus points if they work with interracial family dynamics) can go a long way in helping Deaven when he gets older; should he have questions about his adoption and background. This isn't to say that you, as his parents, can't provide support. But there's a lot that even my adoptive parents (who were and continue to be amazing) weren't able to identify because we saw and experienced the world differently. Now that I'm in my 30s, I'm having to work through the trauma that took a backseat in what I could only describe as a happy childhood and life with my adoptive family...but had always been present.
@ga6589
@ga6589 Год назад
@@littlemisosoup Very well put! I think a must read for any adoptee/adoptive family is "The Primal Wound" by Nancy Verrier. It's gives invaluable insight into the emotional and often misunderstood dynamics that are unique to adoption.
@littlemisosoup
@littlemisosoup Год назад
@@ga6589 I've read The Primal Wound. While the intention behind the book is good, I found it wildly problematic. Nancy Verrier is not an adoptee nor is she a birth mother. Her research was based on isolated anecdotes that were biased by her own bad experiences as an adoptive mother. She makes a lot of generalisations about adoptees, ignoring the complexities of family dynamics separate from her own. Assuming that her insights based on her "professional opinion" rather than direct experience are up for consideration when there's a whole body of subtext she ignores throughout.

I'm not sure if this to personal to ask but my family is just getting into the international adoption process ( we live in Florida) from south Korea and I was wondering how long did it take you from the start to "gotcha" day? Also is there any adoption agencies or programs you used that you would recommend? It's a bit overwhelming for us and we aren't sure which international agency would be best to adopt from south korea. Thank you!

Hi Caitlyn! I meant to respond sooner. We are pretty open book and happy to answer any questions. It took us about 2 years - which is actually quick for South Korea adoption these days. Deaven was a waiting child so the process is faster for a waiting child compared to a referral. Every country is different, however, in the timeframe it takes from start to finish. I'm happy to answer any questions and wish you all the best in your adoption journey: DeannaRuthPhotography@yahoo.com

Because like adopting a cat or a dog you can basically choose what you’d love your child to enjoy And you can choose if you don’t want a child with behavior issues and that, So adopting is better than giving birth to a baby, giving birth is more scary because you don’t really know If your child is going to grow up with his or yers own house and have a fantastic career, Or if he or she is going to live in jail for all their life or most or it because of they horrible stuff they can do in the future Giving birth your taking that chance and sometimes people are extremely lucky. Moat children are kind people and caring towards everyone they meet But sometimes they’re not like that, at least with adoption you can choose basically if you want to adopt a troubled child or if you want to adopt a child who doesn’t have behavior issues and doesn’t cause problems Normally children who have behavior issues usually ate the ones who really just want to he loved and their pretty much lost in the world Every child is different but sometimes children act violently because they just want a family to call their own, Once they get that family they eventually don’t avt violent anymore once they realize they have a home and they never going back to where they came from Them they start to settle down and they’re extremely happy,

Hi there! Last I was told, were were one of the last groups to adopt from South Korea due to the low birth rates in the country. I'm not sure when they will reopen. Other countries nearby like Philippines, Thiland are open and many children needed to be adopt from there. Holt International was our agency and we had great experience with them. I suggest reaching out to them if you haven't already. Best of luck and please reach out if you have any other questions.
@leighhoppins9273
@leighhoppins9273 Год назад
And I remembered my last group home before I lived back with my parents. I was living in Barrie again and they got me into other special Olympic sports feet I think they’re the ones who got me into the Barry integrated baseball Where it’s not Special Olympics but it’s integrated so you have people that are not special-needs people that are special needs so everybody is able to play doesn’t matter what issues a person has or what they don’t have you know And I that was one of my favourite organizations because it allowed everybody to play baseball and I love that and I am really really really hoping that in the future I am able to join it again and hopefully play on that league. As well as the Special Olympics bowling in the winter, I’m hoping I will live in a group home again in the city of Barrie and I know that they will get me or help get me and whoever else do you support into different things they want to do as well. As the group home support staff are there to help everybody do what they want to do in life. You ask them and you tell them that you want to do something they’re not allowed to say no because it’s against human, right They are very very very strict rules at a group home they are not allowed to say or to tell you that you can’t do something. They could suggest maybe that would be a good idea or They could suggest to you that maybe you can try it out but if the person says no, then they can’t really make them do it because it will be against the right of that person right. But it’s their job to try and get you into some thing that the person really wants to do. So Maggie I’m pretty sure would have a better life in a group home then she probably would ever have with a family member. Even somebody who wanted to adopt a child and they didn’t want her. She’s got a pretty good now because people that support people at the group home usually do you support people and what do you want to do in the future? So if Maggie wanted to join an event or the Special Olympics sports, they can’t tell her no or they can’t say she can’t do that because she’s not able to

@DBWorld_YouTube 11 месяцев назад
Hi and thank you for your question. :) As far as I know, there would not be a problem as long as your sister goes through all the required procedures (home study, medical reviews, etc...). I will say, however, South Korea is closing doors to adoption recently due to low birth rates. There are waiting children (medical concerns or challenges) that are available for adoption which is more likely an option these days.

I went to school with a girl who was in the foster care system. Her name is Maggie, and she never got adopted. She nobody wanted her I guess and it’s sad. Really really really sad Really really really sad And as she got older, she had to move into a group home and that’s where she is today you know She doesn’t have the best family life you know I don’t think that her biological family like her biological dad or whatever really loves her I don’t know I don’t know much of her biological family, but nobody wanted to adopt her in the past because she has schizophrenia and other mental issues to And I guess people overlooked her you know people didn’t see past her issues and they didn’t see that she just wanted to be excepted and loved by a family that she can call her own. Because I remember when we were in elementary school together, sometimes she just didn’t feel like she fit in with other people I guess because she was foster cared and other people had a mom and dad and they had a family. And she never did and it is extremely sad. You know Because all she wanted was to be wanted and excepted by people around her. She has mental issues she can’t help that. It’s not her fault she is really sick. In her mind but she’s also a very, very, very nice person and despite her problems. She is very very very nice. She’s a very nice young lady now. And I am sure for the most part she’s very happy where she is you don’t need nobody deserves to be treated badly by anybody you know if nobody can see past your problems People in general if nobody can except you, or anyone for who you are and only go inside you one time and think that you’re absolutely weird, then they’re not the ones for you you don’t wanna be around them People need to surround themselves with people who except them, and laugh and joke and are positive and happy People in general don’t deserve to be around people who are negative all the time and cranky. It doesn’t matter whether it’s your parents or anybody else you know if nobody wanted to adopt her and have her part of their family then she is better off where she is now because at least she has a roof over her head and at least she has support where she is now Because in group homes, people do you support you you have support workers there that support everybody and everything that you want to do. They will try to get you into different activities in groups as well. Like I am in Special Olympics bowling and that because I remember when I was playing with the Wednesday girls and it was a group of ladies who play bowling on Wednesday and the lady who ran it Didn’t want me to play anymore with that group, so the support worker who was working at the group home in Orillia suggested about the Special Olympics bowling And as soon as I got there and made a few friends there, I loved it I absolutely loved it and I’ve been there ever since.
