2023 Toyota Crown Review | Is This Sedan King Of The Hill?

Toyota's new Crown isn't a crossover, or a crossover sedan. It is however a comfortable sedan with an upright driver's seat, big LCDs and a standard AWD hybrid system. Will Toyota's play in the "full-size sedan" segment be a success? Let's unpack it a bit before you all decide.
How big is the Crown? Not as big as you might think. It's about the same size as the Camry and Avalon in terms of length and width. The major difference is in the roofline which is around 4-inches higher and the front seat position which is also about 4 inches higher. The result isn't more headroom but a more upright seating position. Ground clearance? Just 2/10ths over the Camry so rumors of it being a "crossover sedan" aren't accurate, despite the body cladding.
Under the hood you get either the 236 HP AWD hybrid system from the Highlander, capable of 40ish MPG if you treat it gently, or the new 2.4L turbo hybrid from the Lexus RX good for 340 HP. Neither system will make the Crown a rocketship, it's not a GR afterall, but both seem well suited to Toyota's flagship sedan.
The back seat is generous and comfortable, the trunk is smaller than the Camry's by a hair. Sadly the hatchback versions of the Crown remain forbidden fruit.
How does it drive? Pretty well. It's quiet, comfortable, and fuel efficient. The AWD system allows the regular hybrid to feel more sure footed than the hybrid Camry and peppier than the AWD Camry while the 2.4L turbo is a different animal. The large amount of torque on the front means a hair of torque steer and wheel spin at launch, but the rear motor allows the vehicle to feel more nimble than the curb weight would indicate and the entire package is reminiscent of Volvo's PHEV systems, albeit with less power on the back. What do you think? Is the Crown on your list

Thanks, Yes they should bring the Estate(wagon) version here and the sedan should be a liftback/5-door. It makes no sense to me to continue to have fastback/sport back sedans with tiny trunk openings instead of liftback/hatchback designs which are more practical and useful. My old 07 Mazda 6i 5-door was very sporty and useful.
@mark_u

The Crown Estate also makes much more sense in the US market as Toyota doesn't really have a legitimate midsize two-row crossover. This Crown cross-sedan is a head-scratcher. Would have been ok if they just phased out the Avalon without a replacement.

I have a Lexus IS300 sportcross. Best of both world, lots of useability and good power output. Wagons should be pushed more by the makers. They are rather rare on the US market and would be a niche product there. In Europe, it will sell well too. But honestly, the sedan that is more "sedany", that was presented by Toyota is more beautiful.

The Crown just isn't a good value for a lot of people - the Lexus ES hybrid just seems like the better choice for branding, luxury, and the same drivetrain as the base Crown for similar money. The SUV/crossover variant would have been a much better fit for the US market, but I'm sure I'll see a handful of these around (just like I see a few Avalons here and there) for those that want a sedan instead. The two tone paint scheme will look great on the police version

I hate the trunk opening. It's just like the one in the Camry, essentially a horizontal hole with almost zero vertical aspect to the opening. Makes it difficult to load things and even more difficult to reach into the rear of the trunk. It's a shame because I like the rest of the car, although I do hate the two-tone paint job. I'd go monotone too.

I will wait for the official numbers but a little disappointed at the louder than expected cabin noise.

So a eco city machine that’s a little on the noisy side while burning fuel makes this as appealing as the two-tone color scheme. 🎯

I know its not sold anymore in the US, but the Lacrosse when it was released was a much better large car than his thing in 2022. And probably still is.

Why would Toyota change the Landcruiser SUV into a Lexus and bring the Crown sedan, competing with the Camry - instead of just making it a Lexus instead?

Why make a full size car that isn't really any bigger and is actually smaller in some dimensions than the smaller Camry. It's like they don't want to sell any of these

It’s because Toyotas just stupid 😂. They have the worst marketing in the automotive industry

I don't like the two tone color option, or the sloping roof with no hatch. The wheels also don't look in proportion with the body IMO. I own two Toyota products, but this one simply doesn't tick any boxes for me, sorry.

Don't be sorry. It is the Toyota USA/Canada executives who chose this version of the Crown who need to apologize 😁

Having those two red LED's looking back at me from the top of the steering wheel would drive me crazy. Very distracting.
