What is the TANGO hold nowadays? It seemed most of the competitors were using swing dance hold instead!! How to judge the wrong hold with high marks?!

@@cusber It was being claimed that Dancesport would be in the Olympics 10, even 20 years ago and it's no closer now than it was then. Just taking into account the 2024 Olympics, in the process for choosing new sports, Dancesport was one of the first ones eliminated and was beaten by break dancing and skateboarding of all things. In general it's just not a very Olympic-friendly sport. It's judged very subjectively, and this new stupid points-based WDSF judging system does not seem to have brought it any closer. Ballroom dancing is an art, it's about beauty and musicality and expression, it's hard to judge objectively. It's just not conducive to what the Olympics is looking for in new sports. This makes it all the more tragic that the WDSF tore apart the dancing community over a decade ago with its Olympics-obsessed policies when it seems to have been for nothing.

@@bigducky11thanks for the reply, but many other olimpic sports are based on judges like gymnastics, diving, ski jumping, horse riding, figure skating, synchronized swimming...

@@cusber Yes, you're right. But I'd argue dancing isn't like most of those, and is much harder to judge with points than them. It's least like gymnastics or diving. In those, you get points for the difficulty of the skill usually and then the execution. They're clear and discrete criteria. Usually the figures are known ahead of time. But how do you that with dance? Is a natural turn easier than a double reverse spin? Should it be worth fewer points? I don't think so. And then how do you judge execution? How much sway gets a better score, can you have too much? How much rubato should you use in the timing, maybe it depends on the piece of music played. It almost has to depend on the music played because every piece of music is different; can be interpreted differently. And of course the WDSF points system doesn't do that because you can't. So if I understand it correctly, it has categories that you give a score for. But dance can't be reduced to that; it has an endless number of elements that vary by couple to create a holistic performance. How can you score choreography, for example? Mirko and Edita (even when they danced in the WDSF) would often do a very basic Waltz. Should they be scored low in choreography because they do natural spin turn, reverse turn, wing, telemark, etc? What about a whole quickstep routine with swing steps, are quarter turns easier to do that jumping around the floor? Moreover, as far as I know, the WDSF only uses its points system in the final anyway. So you have to use the skating system in earlier rounds. And the Olymics would never allow that. So then what, you have to restrict the competition to a small number of couples and what would be the point? There are other issues too; like floorcraft is an essential element of ballroom dancing. If every couple has to dance individually like in the Olympics, then how do you judge their ability to change their choreography to avoid a collision? Then there are the political issues. The Olympics doesn't want a sport that is administered by multiple organisations. That's why the WDSF tried to make itself the one stop shop for all dancesport couples and events. But it actually achieved the opposite and we got two organisations duplicating everything with almost no overlap in competitors. With the WDO coming about, now there's even 3 organisations running world championships. I doubt that appeals to the Olympics. And what's the point of having an Olympic dance competition without all the best couples competing together? This is especially the case with the professional category where the WDC has always been and always will be stronger. Even loyal WDSF couples like Simone & Annette went over to the WDC when they turned professional. It's such a shame we never got to see couples like Benedetto & Claudia or Emanuel & Tania compete with the best as professionals.
