What an awesome review you’re doing on the new 2.8l auto Landcruiser been watching all the way, I test drove one a few weeks ago now and was happy with how it drove empty and was concerned how it would go with a full loaded canopy and towing a heavy trailer etc and you’ve pretty much summed it up. Keep up the great work and some beautiful trails out that way that’s for sure mate.

Great Vid. Good to see your open to new things and willing to accept them on merit. I recently looked at the price difference of the V8 thinking the 4 cylinder auto would even out considering auto's are much more expensive. The 4 cylinder auto is around $3-4k cheaper. I predict the days of the V8 are numbered.

As said before it tows better then the other 4 cylinders only because of the higher diff ratio. If it had 3.42s like the Holden Colorado also with 500nm there would be trouble up those hills.

Higher the number it’s lower ratio diff

So what's your point? How is "only because" relevant? Bottom line: it tows better.
@Dan-rg7jj
@Dan-rg7jj 5 месяцев назад
If the tyre size, weight, engine, transmission are there roughly the same then the biggest difference is going to be the change in diff ratio. Do you disagree? Have you ever swapped gears?
@DiscoFang
@DiscoFang 5 месяцев назад
I’ve swapped diffs and gearboxes and sprockets (bikes) numerous times in numerous vehicles in my 57yrs. Ignoring the fact that the “other 4 cyls” you listed don’t all have the same gearing and it’s not just the final drive, I still don’t understand your point in trying to isolate the why as if it diminishes the result. What does it matter?
@Dan-rg7jj
@Dan-rg7jj 5 месяцев назад
@@DiscoFang It matters because it gives a torque manipulation as a percentage gain or loss. All the pro reviews or dealers aren't including this info. In the US they always say what gears the model comes with. Yes the other 4 cylinders don't all have the same but if narrowing it down to 6 speed autos 3.7 is common and 4.3 or whatever this cruiser has isn't common with an auto. I have bikes too. I run a 51t cassette on the rear. It's almost as big as a human head.

@@TeamBulletOffroad It is safer in general for this gearbox (AC60F) to tow in 4th as it is not an overdrive speed (1:1 ratio) . And you will have the torque converter locked with no slip and the transmission oil temperature will stay in a reasonable range (up to 120 Celsius ) . Also for the engine will be better in 4th due to lower EGT ( exhaust gas temperature) values. It will have an impact on the reliability in general and It really depends how long you wanna keep the car.

Hi, great review. Ive had 5 v8 70s, a 40,60,80,100,200, 70 troopie camper, 2006 factory turbo 70, a fjcruiser, got the worlds best unrestored fj45. Sold my 2020 79 dual cab and bought a hilux dual cab sr. Why? To see if i can live with the 2.8 and auto. Best wagon? 80 factory turbo. Best ute? 2006 6cyl factory turbo. Ive not been impressed with the 200, the 300 is just a prado, and ive had problems with the track issues in the v8 70s. Am i happy with the hilux? Yes. 9.1/100 against 16/100 in the v8s. Will i buy a 70 2.8? Ive got tonwatch a lot more of your videos to be convinced that toyota are not taking the Mickey out of us. Agree. The 300 is nice but not for 150k for a Sahara. The new Lexus GX is coming which is a fancy Prado (2024) and has ambient lighting, massaging seats etc, and will be much cheaper and has a 3.5 twin turbo petrol V6. Toyota always refuses to give people more power. They won't throw the 3.3 diesel in anything else. I had a 4.2TD 80, loved it to bits, and a 105 petrol, always been a Toyota man but they're making it hard. The 4 bangers are good for suburban work, only highway work and hills they run out of legs quickly.

@@nathansharma87 Well contrary to your belief, he's just demonstrated the 4 banger isn't running out of puff, he's actually saying the opposite, it pulling harder than the V8. I know from using my V8 as a tow vehicle, miss the initial down change from 5th to 4th on an incline and it was back to 3rd to keep it going. I liked the V8, hated the truck with a passion, they are so over rated. The V8 has a cult following too, but I'm not sure why, I liked it, but it wasn't great. @mclongkock6678 5 месяцев назад
@Hardscript no I'm saying it in referring to how he said it tows in top gear. But in actual it's only using 3rd and 4th. My 2022 rogue hardly get into 6th on a empty car let alone when towing. I'm comparing it to my rogue as the motor and box are the same different is hilux use air to air cooler while the 79 use water to air. Both put out the same torque and kw. Water to air cooler is more efficient therefore less heat soak. The 2.8 and auto tows while. I mean mine is tuned plus dpf back exhaust tow my 2t boat reasonable while. But if you want to go 3.5t get something else.
@Hardscript
@Hardscript 5 месяцев назад
@mclongkock6678 I've heard other hilux owners say the same about the 6th gear and Ive also heard prado owners say its not a problem, its likely there are differences despite them being the same engine and transmission, beyond cooling. My 23 prado has no problem converter locking in 6th while towing my 2t camper trailer.
@mclongkock6678
@mclongkock6678 5 месяцев назад
@Hardscript my sister had a 2018 prado and yeah, that thing gets into 6th easier than my hilux. I havent towed anything with it before. This is all I can confirm. Power wise, I think the prado is underpowered by 20kw 😂. I can get the hilux into 6th while towing only on straight road or downhill and at over 100km. However, I just sit on 90km in 5th reving 1700rpm. If we comparing the hilux to the 79 I would guess the tuning is the same as both are design to work. About toyota manual says to tow in 4th. I haven't heard that or read the manual book. However my dealer says it shouldn't be a problem just tow in auto. As the car sense the load going up hill or when u want to pick up speed the gear automatically go back to 4th or 3rd anyway so there is no need to lock it into 4th. Beside even if you lock it into any gear it still kick down when it feels the need to. It just won't kick up a gear. So really when you say lock it into 4th to tow, it basically means locking out 5th and 6th. In my opinion a vehicle should be able to tow its Max rated weight without hassle. Be able to do the speed limits and not breaking. All the dual cab Utes should only be rated at 2500kg towing. They're a under weight and underpowered to tow 3.5t making them unsafe.

So what's the 1GD ? 450NM ? and you say it out pulls your tuned 700nm 1vd on a incline ?? Was your tuner bullshitting your tourqe readings ?

Cheers mate, I believe 500nm and it still was heaps better than the grey one taking off and around town, around the same pulling uphill, thats them both in 4th, but I did have to back off with grey one as egts rose... overall unfortunately in my opinion the 2.8 wins by a bit... And thats not having thrown a cent at the donk...

The auto would make a huge difference on its own. The standard 5 speed just isnt friendly for pretty much anything.

Off road you can't wheel them there just too big, in Australia anyway, for towing maybe and space yes, but offroad im going to disagree, {in my opinion}

If people keep buying this garbage , within 5 years Toyota will wind back quality and engine performance even more. It’s the world of pay more for less.
