Good video and info. Been thinking cereals and clovers due to lack of moisture every year. And maybe sorghum to add some cover. Thanks for the info

Great info as usual! Thank you. You reaffirmed what I was thinking to combat our yearly fall drought , changing over plots to clover & chicory. Im in Northern kent county, North of Grand Rapids Mi. Just getting some rain today, the chicory I planted has been hanging in there despite the dry conditions!

Great factual content. Your clover seed blend I switched too in 5 of my 7 plots are doing well despite the drought here in southern MI. A bit of rain hitting us today. I had to sew rye in the other plots to cover the fall/winter, but your blend goes in them this spring. after green up.Thanks again

Great video! One question, I planted your sweet feast brassicas July 27, Have not had rain here in West Michigan since September 5, some of the leaves are turning yellow. Will these bounce back if we get rain, expect over 1” in the next couple of days. Thanks again for the information you provide!

John, great video, thank you for the update. I plan to add medium red clover to fill in an existing oats plot, followed by a rye overseed. We sre, like most, in a drought in northcentral PA. Should I wait for rain or plant now, as it's mid September and rain should be in the near future?

How late is too late to plant clover? This past week its been non stop rain. I planted rye but wonder if the clover would of made it. Avg frost date is Oct 17. Which would of been around 30days til frost

I converted five of my 11 food plots in central Virginia to perennials. You are so right when you made the statement that you cannot fight against weather conditions you are experiencing. Most times lately August has been dry - too dry to germinate seeds. I waited until September 15 to begin planting and we are finally getting multiple rain showers.

Hi John, on my 80 in North Central Wisconsin I added a new 1.5 acre plot which I limed, fertilized and planted with NWS Green Forage Blend souped up with a bit of berseem clover and very light radish and brassicas. Knowing the first year soil wouldn't be the best and at the time we were in a consistent rain pattern, I planted the new 1.5 acre plot around July 10. It turned out great. Given how rain tapered off after mid-Aug, I'm glad I planted when I did. I overseeded light spots with cereal rye about 3 weeks ago. Deer have been hitting it hard every night (my first hunt of the year will be this evening so I'm excited to sit the new plot/new box blind). I know overly mature plants are not the desired outcome and I know July can often be dry but perhaps part of a solution maybe to for folks to be ready to plant 3-4 weeks sooner than they normally would be and if on July 5 for example there are 2-3 good rains forecasted over a 10 day period, get the seed in the ground. By not starting to watch the forecast until late July / early Aug, as you mention, a fall drought could really hamstring any chance for much growth. I guess it's a matter of balancing the downsides of overly mature plants, more active weed growth and historically drier summer months. What are your thoughts on planting 3-4 weeks earlier than normal if good rains are forecasted?

John, can I overseed an established clover plot with chicory, or am I wasting money? Will the chicory germinate?
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663

As long as it’s not too thick the chicory should grow. Even waiting and frost seeding it can work.

Jeff, Do you mow your seclusion or chicory blend plots? Do you spray with clethodim or Imox? If so when do you use these methods/timing.
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 9 дней назад
Not sure who Jeff is 😉 But yes we will mow all clover mixes if necessary. Some small kill plots with seclusion don’t need mowing as deer keep it down. But if it’s 60 to 70% flowered we may mow as long as it’s not dry conditions like now. Imox or clethodim will work for weed control:

On decent soil that holds moisture, can you spay imox end of july, then seed rye in early sept. And get germ in your clover plots. Its the residual im worried about. My last mow is usually end of july,but smart weed creeps in, usually 3 foot clumps and stangles clover and chic. Would like to spray one last time end of july??
