The deer hit soil builder's buckwheat hard, but not too much evidence that anything else was hit (not say'n they weren't- I didn't see it). That said, I disked it under before planting my fall crop, as recommended. If I use the soil builder again, I will spray it with Gly before hitting it with the disk as the sorghum came back with a vengeance! So much so that it grew to 4-5' and shielded most everything else I planted for the fall. The sorghum did winter kill and provided a nice organic matter come spring, but my winter crop suffered as a result of the resurgence in sorghum.
The video says 1/2 to 1 gallon of N per acre, but reading the rates on the back I don't follow that math...or maybe I'm just interpreting it wrong. The rates represent the amount of N to be used with 1 gallon of water. When I spray an acre, I typically need 10-12 gallons of water, so for instance under the "most crops" that would require 10-12 quarts of N (rate of 1 qt.:1 gal.). So if there's still 4 quarts in a gallon, then in reality the mixing rate is no different than other foliar nitrogen products at 2.5 gallons per acre. I think if you used 1/2 to 1 gallon of N per acre then according to these rates you'd have to figure out how to cover an acre with 2-4 gallons of spray. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
@@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 I see now...the label in the video is different than the label on the website. The website says Rate of Liquid N to Water - Per Acre, and has the same rates listed on the label in the video.
Never get tired of listening to you so glad I stumbled upon you , your knowledge of seeds and how to grow them in all types of soil just blows me away again thanks for the info you offer it’s great
I got to say your rock/clay plot looks good, My plot I have to move rock to find the dirt! I have great success with your seed even with my bad dirt and all kinds of critters enjoy it. In the last 2 months I have seen moose, bear, deer, turkey, bobcat and a bunch or rabbits in there either feeding on last falls Fall Forage Blend or this springs buckwheat. Thanks John!
I’m a big fan of summer food plots. No chance of creating a “doe factory” here in western Massachusetts our deer numbers aren’t that high. Love watching the bucks does and fawns all out there on the soybeans and clover!!!
Thanks for the boost of confidence! There is hope for my sandy soil yet! Heading up next weekend to open a new food plot and throw down buckwheat to over winter, then next year it will be rye. Thanks for all the detail in your reasoning and process for seed and timing. After your video I checked out another food plot video from another creator, not the doe factory guy😆😆, and their food plot was lush, green, huge and definitely had lots of time input to be so perfect. Your content gives us blue collar food plotters reliable, believable information on the ups and downs of food plots! OK , until the next video!
I'm just curious, I hunt in Menomonee County, Have you seen many deer this year? My cams picked up a few doe, but no bucks. This is a first. Just wondering if you heard anything about the deer numbers this year? Thank you
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 I hope so. Last year my food plots were barely touched compared to years past. But it was also warmer than usual most of the season.
If adding UREA nitrogen to increase plant production during its growing season, but as UREA can lower the soil ph, how quickly does the UREA actually lower soil ph?
How well does your clover work in NE Pennsylvania? Which would you suggest? Soil test is I had to add a tiny bit of lime and that is it. All other readings were good
This will be my 4th year with a screen product along a road I am trying to screen from road hunters. I watched one of your videos and you said the soil couldn’t take 2-3 years of screening in the same spot. I’ve not used any fertilizer any year yet and have grown 10-12 foot screens each year. This may be the year it fails. It’s already planted so that’s that this year. What can I alternate between years and how many years do I swap something out before replanting your HD screen product. What’s the rotation and what else can I use in place of the HD screen?
Hearing your current temperatures in early June kind of shocked me! I'm in Texas and we are hitting 97 today. We can't plant clover at this time. It just simply won't make it. I'm going to try seclusion this year on a few spots with light sandy soil. Can't wait to see all the activity it will get.
I have rye that is 5-6 ft tall with very little to no weeds. Would it be better to cut it now or leave it tall until late July when I get the area ready for the fall food plots? Just wondering about root growth if I cut now.
@@craigweinmann320 I have 5 plots of rye that went to seed and I mowed all but one. It’s starts the decomposition process and feeds birds and ever deer will eat the grain. I’m now following up with my summer plots. Western Illinois.
I feel like u r playing chess and I’m playing checkers. 🤞 planting into some really sandy soil. Someday if I watch enough videos I’m hoping to play chess as well. Thanks
Sandy Soil is something many RU-vid personalities/hunting personalities don’t deal with. We have a few properties we deal with it on so we actually can relate.
You are correct! You are one of the few that directly discuss the sandy soil. After watching your videos over the last couple years I’ve had better success with your advice on techniques and seed choice. So thanks!
I planted your soil builder topped w crimson on sandy ground May 25, it’s looking good. How would you suggest I plant my fall plots without tilling? I have a bush hog and small no till drill. Great video. Thank you. I’m not against tilling; just would rather not because of the sand.
Great plot ideas. We’ve been wet in Western Wisconsin. How late can I go to plant HD screen do you think. I have a nice rye stand that I mowed last week. Also what would happen if I just continued mowing the rye until end of August and then let it go or would it be better to disc the rye and replant in September with more rye? Would fall crimson clover be a good addition to the rye if planted in September as well? Looking forward to your podcast.
Thank you. I’ll be putting your switchgrass and HD screen this first week of June. Sadly I live hours away and hope it works. I did a good gly spray and had to bust up the ground. Sadly may not be able to get back for awhile. Fingers crossed.
