Nice bike! I understand 1x on mountain bikes as you're usually only pedalling up hill but I don't understand the popularity of it on gravel bikes. Aren't they all about varied terrain over usually longer distances? Climbing up a 20% dirt grade in one place--you want a low gear--and then catching speed on a long paved descent--you want a tall gear--while then tucking in for a 30km spin back home where you'll appreciate narrow gear spacing? Happy every has options today to suit them though!
Totally… I certainly see both sides of the argument for 1X or 2X. I “think” 1X13 Sram Red is coming any day now too, which should help chop up the gear jumps.
Awesome review- I'm looking at a 2023 Apex 1 model. Do you know what the weight is without pedals? I tried this bike and the Giant Revolt Advanced. I think due to the slacker head angle, the Giant felt very sluggish. The Cervelo was so responsive, like a road bike.
Can’t take any road or gravel bike seriously if it is 1X. For a MTB or certain cross races where there’s extreme mud over the entire course, sure. For road and almost all gravel, thanks, but no thanks. Extreme chain angles and big gear jumps. A lose, lose. And the supposed weight savings is usually next to non-existent due to the longer chain and dinner plate sized cassette along with a chain catcher that almost all 1X set ups run. A pure marketing scam designed to reduce manufacturing costs and increase ROI while offering no meaningful advantages over 2X set ups. 😀
