😄 The Trax is FWD, gas only, and uses a POS 3-Cylinder engine with 137HP & 162lb/ft. The Hornet R/T is AWD, PHEV, has Brembo Brakes, Adaptive Dampers with the Track Pack, can run on electric only, gas only, or both. Total power output is 288HP & 387lb/ft while getting better fuel economy than the Trax. Heck, the electric motor alone puts out similar power to the Trax at 121HP & 184 lb/ft. That's just talking about the powertrain.
In regards to the powertrain, the occasional inconsistencies are a consequence of the multi-air technology impregnated into these engines. I've owned an Alfa Romeo product for 4 years and there have been times where the engine just feels like it fell asleep. The intake valves are actuated using independent hydraulic solenoids rather than a conventional camshaft. This allows for infinitely variable timing of the valve behavior, which is good for efficiency, but at the expense of creating a slower response compared to a conventional mechanical operation. If you are driving spiritedly and the engine knows you are driving spiritedly, it will produce power as needed. However, it does not like sharp transitions between slow and aggressive driving because the ECU needs time to adjust the valve behavior.
Thank you for the explanation. Btw, is this technology/ design limited to the Alfa Romeos or is it there in all econobox SUVs including the Japanese ones?
These have been on sale for a couple months and I’ve yet to see one. Not surprised if they soon continue the Mopar tradition of being fleet queens and being massively discounted to credit challenged people.
It's a brand new nameplate and it's the first compact SUV Dodge has ever made in history. It takes a while for people to realize it exists because Dodge never offered a vehicle in this class before.
@EOtekk Dodge has actually sold a compact crossover before, the Nitro based on the KK Jeep Liberty. That didn't sell well either. Usually with Dodge anything that isn't the Charger or Challenger doesn't sell well.
@@damilolaakanni The Nitro was a 4,200lbs vehicle and was class leading in towing capacity lol. It was a real utility SUV, not a tall car like the ones that exist today. Not even remotely in a similar market to the Hornet.
Dodge tends to get away with their pricing because of the style and power of motors they are using but I also feel the Hornet is grossly over priced. I'm sure some will buy them but I just don't think they are worth it and they will be way cheaper in a couple years on the used market and better incentives come along on the new ones when these sit on lots.
Price is robbery, but I had a Hornet R/T as a rental when my Grand Cherokee was getting work done, and I actually really loved it. I’m 6’5 and fit super comfortably, it was really zippy, my only downsides are the transmission, it is finicky, and the High Beams. I live on a lot of unlit roads at night, and for some reason the automatic High Beams would not turn on. When I turned the feature off the High Beams really did not make that great of a difference. It’s AMAZING on gas tho, I drove 70 miles, all highway, and for having the car for 24 hours only put 2 Gallons in to top it off
I preordered one of these, and seven months later after massive delays I finally saw it and they got my order wrong, it was without the blacktop package. Word to the wise, the base silver wheels are comically ugly, and there are virtually no aftermarket options. While the base model is inexpensive, packages quickly drive it into VERY expensive territory for a subcompact crossover. At MSRP, I can't recommend one, and am glad I wasn't able to wait and picked up a Nissan Rogue instead as its much roomier and better fuel economy and its base trim was not comically ugly like the base Hornet is.
Yeah pre-ordering a hornet.. would have been a grave mistake, rental fleet, break down all the time with just a few thousand miles on them. Tow truck driver even says, he tows a ton of hornets
Love that color...and those red calipers. 50K used to seem like a lot..but for a hybrid... that you can get your hands on,...wait...that's still a lot 🤨 Can I just have the Alfa? That looks like an Uncle's car not a dad car...close but not quite family friendly. I'm an uncle...I know my place 🤗
I was gonna make a joke about the old Dodge Hornet rolling in its grave like “look how they massacred my boy” but instead im reading that it’s a $50k USD car and that’s just so far beyond insane. I was looking at some small/mid sized SUVs and regular cars were around $50k. Just spend the extra money and get an X3 with the M40i engine at that point (that’s what I did 😜)
$50k it would be a really hard sale for us, We already own its smaller sibling the 2018 Jeep Renegade which we love dearly 5 years of ownership and not one issue whatsoever which we bought for $18k after discounts and some haggling. If the pricing was in the $40k range then it would be a decent proprosistion. Now if they ever release the Hornet GLH Package We might consider purchasing a Hornet. We are empty nesters and the smaller CUV are a better fit. But when a CUV steps in at $50k that is Dodge Durango GT plus territory so you might as well step up at that price point.
@@Kellettcj71 The Renegade is on the Small Wide 4x4 the Tonale/Compass are on the Small Wide 4x4 LWB chassis they are the same platform just one is lengthened slightly. You are mistaken !!
I see a ton of these im guessing there being leased tho not actually bought on a 4-6 year financing loan im sure most people just lease these and that is what Dodge wants im guessing
At least both the hornet and the nicer tonale are far more interesting than either the R4P or nx450h+ which has the character of a rav4. The dodge and Alfa are cooler oooking inside and out and they perform and drive so much better
Micah, what are your guys’ personal cars? I think I remember Lyn (idk if it’s “Lynn” or “Lyn”) saying in one of the KBB videos I think a few months ago that iirc, she has a 2018-ish Volkswagen Jetta Wagon or something.
@@austinkowalski5512 No thanks. The Hornet and Mopar forums are full of people saying they regret buying them. The Hornet sounds like nothing but trouble.
@@robertk1049 right it’s a forum though, you normally go to forums to complain especially when it’s a brand new car. I’ve had mine, and haven’t had any issues with mine.
Great review and good point about the interior, it is the same for 30k and 50k and at 30k the interior is like peers...50k it is well below peers. The same goes with speed at 30k 6.5 is good at 50k with power shot 5.6 is below many peers. A Volvo S60 PHEV has 41 miles electric range and 4.6 zero to 60 for 50k. It should also be mentioned that the mileage for gas is terrible. A Volvo XC40 has better mileage, speed, interior, quality and options for the same price (ICE only). I was hoping Dodge created a good car, but it looks like dodge got stung.
Lots of haters. Some of it is understandable based on the sticker. I received 10k EV credit on the RT before haggle. 46k sticker. Brought prices to 36k. Haggled down another $1060. Leased $360 a month 15k miles a year with 6k down. Coming from a Mustang. Gave me a ton for Mustang. 53k 4 1/2 years old. Received 7k less than I paid. Numbers worked for me. I’m getting 33 mile all electric range. Handles great & zippy. Koni suspension system & Brembo brakes. RT has a ton of safety & tech features standard. Love the blacktop package. I’m not a follower, so I checked it out for myself and decided it was a fit for me. A few electronic bug so far, but all in all I’m happy with it. You may be forgetting that it’s not a Dodge product at all, it’s an Alfa Romeo Tonale. Nowhere on the car is there any mention of Dodge besides the slashes.
Your story doesn't add up. You don't get the EV credit from the dealer or before the haggle. You use IRS form 8936 to claim the credit when filing your taxes. The max amount is $7,500 not $10K.
Not talking about the 7500 tax credit. I’m in PA. Go to any dealer site & look for yourself. Zero reason for me to lie. I purchased from D’Ambrosio Dodge. I received a 6k incentive from Stalantis plus 2 others.

I have one as a rental right now for a week, it’s a total pile of garbage. acceleration is jerky and unpredictable, steering is all over the place and goes wherever it wants, visibility out the front is awful due to the rear view mirror being directly in your sight line, my knee is smashing into the center console, the driver seat is super uncomfortable, not enough room in the driver area and I am only 6’ 1” and 195 pounds. I wouldn’t buy this car if it was only $15,000. One of the worst cars on the road, Dodge will be bankrupt in less than 10 years
The fact that two people could own this where one is a team lead at Target and one is a partner at a law firm. $20k between base and loaded. If that’s not a testament to the current automotive landscape, I don’t know what is.
I laughed when you said subscribe because I thought ha, I’m already subscribed. I clicked on it to check and I wasn’t 🤦♂️. I’ve seen like a jillion of your videos 😁. Something about those interiors. The Mrs is right. In 2020 I hopped in a charger and before I pulled off I was touching on the center stack and the rubber molding just gave way. I really liked the smooth and compliant ride! Between the trim issue and the GTI like rear seat space it was a no go for me. It seems like this vehicle has similar rear seat space. The pass through is certainly helpful.
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too expensive. Especially being a dodge vehicle that will depreciate heavily, likely be inflicted with electrical issues (classic dodge) and reliability in general will be questionable. I cannot imagine anyone taking a risk on this vehicle, even if it was $10k less.
50k... Direct competitor to a Lexus NX Hybrid. Dodge quality is getting better (15/32)... Alfa is getting worse (29/32). Considering options, cost of ownership, reliability, resale this is a hard pass vehicle even at 30k (mazda 3, corolla hybrid, crosstrek).
