Captain Joanne P. Murphy was Donna Loring’s Commanding Officer while they served together in the combat zone at Long Binh during the Vietnam War, and Murphy’s bequest has been foundational to the Donna M. Loring Lecture endowment. It is therefore fitting that this year’s event, which marks the occasion of the Loring Lecture’s 15th Anniversary, will be a salute to Cpt. Murphy and to all of the women Vietnam veterans, delivered by the Honorable Donna M. Loring.
This annual lecture series addresses current or historic Native American or Aboriginal issues, Indigenous rights, as well as women’s issues, civil rights, and issues of fairness and equality as they overlap with the concerns of Tribal peoples.
The Honorable Donna M. Loring is a Penobscot Nation tribal elder, former council member, and former Penobscot Nation Representative in the Maine State Legislature. Through this work, as well as her hosting of “Wabanaki Windows" on WERU community radio, her recent work as Senior Advisor on Tribal Affairs to Governor Janet Mills, and many other commitments-including depositing her papers with UNE and initiating this lecture program--Donna Loring has devoted herself not only to public service but to raising public awareness of and dismantling institutional discrimination against Wabanaki people and continuing the hard fight for recognition of their sovereignty. Her 2008 book, In the Shadow of the Eagle: A Tribal Representative in Maine, was recently reissued by DownEast Books and her 2016 play, Mary and Molly: In the Spirit of the Ancestors, has now become an animated film. She is also a poet, holds two honorary doctorates, and has received numerous awards, including a Deborah Morton Award from UNE and the "Courage is Contagious" Award from the Maine School of Law.
