If your car breaks down and you can't immediately afford to repair it, you'll become legitimately homeless with no source of income. You need to focus your efforts on getting a place to rent, because if say, your car breaks down and you're renting somewhere, even if you have no income, you'll have a few month buffer of living there to figure things out before they can evict you.

That’s just not true. I would be homeless, but I wouldn’t lose my source of income. My main source of income is not involving using my car other than commuting. I can do that with mass transit or rideshare. The math just doesn’t math on this. Average rent for a one bedroom apartment in Charlotte is $1412 a month. To move in, I’d have to have that much as a deposit plus another $1412 for first month rent, plus utility deposits and renters insurance. That’s an obscene amount of money to have upfront. If I had that much money saved, it would fix everything on the car, without the burden of adding additional expenses or tying me down to one location. All without having an eviction on my record, which will cause problems for multiple years in the future.

You could get a good rate on say a week at a low end hotel, near a mechanic. Get the car fixed and back on the road.

Why does it have to be a 1 bedroom? You can probably rent a room month to month for $5-800. Then you have a bed, kitchen access, a place to store your stuff. Do you really see yourself doing ubereats and task rabbit via public transit if worse comes to worst? Renting something gives you some stability, and having a fixed address may assist finding part/full time work.

@@slothznpelicanz i’m going to reply to this in parts, because I am replying on my phone. A one bedroom is what a normal person would think of as the standard. That’s why I used that as an example. I could rent a room, but you see how that turned out previously. Not only did I almost get killed, but I got used for money, and I was paying more than I would have to have my own apartment.

@@slothznpelicanz there are no rooms to rent for five dollars. I don’t know where you would get that number from. and yes, it is completely practical and possible to do Taskrabbit by mass transit. No one said anything about doing Uber eats. I haven’t done that for almost a year. But I see nothing unreasonable about doing TaskRabbit that way.

Dude study for your CDL in one moth you will have a job making 800 a week to start easy then 1200 after a year or 60k a gear in two years you can get into Rohel making 1559 a week or 72k a year. Then you can buy your own truck and make 120k in less than 3 years.

It’s not that easy though. I already make more than that anyway.

bud, forget all of the part time work. You should be applying for full time office jobs that pay you salary and benefits as well as offer career trajectory. You have a 4yr degree and could work any number of entry level corporate positions from operations to finance.
@TheMarkGoudy

That’s just not true. The work I’m doing is not part-time. Why are you assuming it is? I work more than 40 hours/week. The job situation was discussed in the most recent livestream where I talked about why I’m not doing that and why it didn’t work when I tried. It’s simply untrue that my degree could get me entry level jobs. I’m old. I’m too experienced and overqualified. I’ve tried anyway and get no response and a few rejections. You’re trying to make this a simple issue as if I don’t have the first clue about what I should be doing. What you’re saying isn’t true and doesn’t work.

@@ahuruglica Maybe, MAYBE, but no. You’re making up imaginary scenarios in your head and projecting them onto me. Don’t act like you’re wishing me well. You clearly don’t by making this comment.

Some of these mechanics can and will b.s. you. I remember taking my car to this one mechanic in my city (who I trust because they do good work); however, they are not without trying to upsell and hit their quota. They stated my radiator was leaking, which is a $1k fix. I was like "Okay, I will monitor it and see what happens...." Six months later and the needle gauge on my dashboard has not gone above the middle, which would have indicated that my radiator had fully failed. I would not state that there is probably not something wrong with that aspect; however, they made it seem urgent. Because of this, I was able to only pay like $500 when the cost could have come up to like $1500. Yesterday, I went back to get my brakes and rotors checked. They then told me I need my calipers and control arm replaced. My car needs to be aligned as well. $1800 including the brakes and rotors replacement. They only changed the brakes and rotors and I feel like there is nothing wrong with the alignment of my car. I only had to pay $750 with taxes. I do not care what needs to be done, but I NEED to be the one to regulate how much I spend. If I have $8k in my checking account (which I do have). I will spare 10%. I have my 3-6 months and I still need to contribute $6.5k to my Roth IRA: I am paying myself first and THAT is THAT.

That's basically this situation. My car has a lot of issues but what they want to charge to fix it is obscene. They want $1803.29 to replace the drivers front ball joint, knuckle, and hub and two rear wheel bearings. Well, the wheel bearings are old (I replaced them around 2018) but they're not making any noise. I'll get them done eventually. But that other stuff should not cost that much. Looking up the parts online, it's maybe $350. I have a car dude in Parkersburg (my hometown). I have to swing through there on my way back to Ohio. Just messaged him about doing all of this. I'm going to guess he'll charge me $600-700.

@@TheMarkGoudyWell, there is the whole other way of looking at it as knowing what each part does and how many years they should last. Whenever I feel like my brake pedal pulsates or steering wheel shakes; it is most likely a brake or rotor issue. When I had gone yesterday, they replaced both the rotor and brake pads. Weirdly enough, it has only been a year since they replaced both. Rotors should last at least two years or 60k miles, brakes, probably a year. So you could always ask to hold off on rotors. The issue comes in when you do that and then you still feel the pulsating because the rotors have grooves in them. So they really should be changed together; however, you do not want to have to pay more replacing both, when you could get away with just replacing the one that needs to be replaced more often.
