In an effort to reassure its commitment to bolster food security and tackle the food import bill, the government of St. Kitts and Nevis, through the Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) successfully imported 9000 tissue-cultured banana and pineapple plants from St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Friday 5th January 2024.
Staff from the Department of Agriculture were captured transplanting 3000 tissue-cultured banana and 6000 pineapple plants during a ceremony held at the Needsmust Farm to mark the successful arrival of the seedlings, as these plants will help to contribute to the increase in crop production as outlined in the Ministry's plan to achieve CARICOM's 25% by 2025 target.
Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources the Hon. Samal Duggins along with Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Miguel Flemming, Director of Agriculture Jeanelle Kelly, Agronomist Brontie Tucker, Extension Officer Mark Adams and other staff within the department were seen in attendance.
