2024 Honda XL750 Transalp | Dirt & Road Test

Some three decades ago Honda brought a Transalp to the U.S., then discontinued it two years later after a lukewarm response. But that was back in the days when Friday night VHS Blockbuster video rentals were a thing. Quite a lot has changed since then and Adventure Bikes have taken hold in a big way in the U.S. And while Honda appears to be using a similar formula to the old XL600V Transalp in creating an approachable, dependable, capable adventure bike, the new XL750 Transalp is quite a different machine.
A new 755cc parallel twin, 8-valve Unicam engine now makes 83 horsepower (90.5 horsepower in Euro spec), mated to a 6-speed transmission, featuring an assist/slipper clutch - both of which are mounted as a stressed member in a steel-constructed diamond frame. Electronic rider aids include Throttle by Wire, power maps, engine braking, traction control and ABS, all controlled through a modern 5" color TFT display For the chassis, Honda gave it a 43mm inverted fork and Pro-Link rear shock featuring 7.9 and 7.5 inches of wheel travel respectively. The seat height comes in at 33.7 inches along with 8.3 inches of ground clearance riding on dirt-friendly 21" front and 18" rear spoked wheels, stopped by dual 310mm discs in front and a single 256mm disc in the rear.
Honda's new XL750 Transalp is all updated, and ready to rumble in the increasingly-competitive middleweight adventure segment. Is it ready to go head-to-head with bikes in the category like the Yamaha Tenere 700 and KLR? Will it shake up the segment with a budget-friendly MSRP of $9,999? We have answers to all your burning questions and more.

Adventure Bikes weren't meant to be single trackers:) Great job with the what was Honda attempting to address and what weren't they going after. 10k new bike isn't going to have top end suspension components and for most adventure bikers, that's ok. The ABS and TC "reset" that happens when the bike is powered off is a decision made by Honda's legal team, would be my guess. It's stupid, but I'm guessing they wanted to reduce the chance of getting sued when people ride the bike on pavement. Forcing the ABS and TC on reduces the chance that a lawyer could successfully argue that the accident was caused by a design flaw. Off pavement accidents aren't investigated to the same extent, so basically the rider gets the blame.
@steve_kamrad5216
@steve_kamrad5216 4 месяца назад
Yeah, and honda always leans toward the safe side of these things, but other manufacturers have a 2 button reset and also the dash flashes ur status, I mean, I'd love to see the bike retain ur user settings after its keyed off. Once keyed off it resets ur settings within user mode, so it goes back to a "road" mode and "user" mode goes allllll the way back to default which reactivates abs and tc. Which no other manufacturer does.

@Rod990ktm
@Rod990ktm 4 месяца назад
I’m deciding my next bike. AT was my first choice, but I think it’s very heavy, so after some research, the 900 Rally pro is now my option. I saw your Tiger off road racing video (with some scramblers and off road bikes), I’m not planing on nothing similar, more gravel road and some more technical, but not heavy. I would love to consider the Transalp, but from what I’ve read is almost as heavy a the Tiger and lacking many equipment (which is std on the Tiger) and the suspension should be upgraded.. and when you add all that you end up with a expensive bike. Please convince me I’m wrong and the TA is as good as a bike as the Tiger. The exhaust header, isn’t it too low?
@steve_kamrad5216
@steve_kamrad5216 4 месяца назад
@Rod990ktm all the bikes have low pipes these days and the best thing to do is just invest in a good skid plate and ride smart. The TA feels like a much lower and smaller bike than the tiger 900, even the new one, and the cost difference is huge if you're just going to be playing in some gravel and dirt. The Tiger, especially the 2024 is super premium but also an amazing road bike. Like 2 bikes in one, but of you just want a fun, low worry adv bike, I'd throw a leg over the transalp daily before the Tiger 900. Both are fun bikes but the Tiger feels serious, like driving a Lamborghini over a mustang or something. Both are fun but if you hate the idea of the weight on the TA, the Tiger is more top heavy and the geometry of the tiger is not the best for beginner riders in mud and sand. But if you want a sporty bike that can tour and adv ride and is super nice and reliable the tiger is a great option especially with the bumble in HP this year. Like you said the AT feels big and heavy, so does the tiger, not as much, but sizing down to a TA you'll be really comfortable and when someone drops their full size "adv bike" you'll be having more fun. But it really depends on the use case scenario. If you want to move 100 pounds of gear into the woods and travel for weeks? The bigger bikes do it better but after doing a few hundred adv and ds rides with my old tiger 800 I prefer to set up camp and ride and come back to a shower somewhere. You can buy a lot of hotel rooms and move clothes and some gear really easy compared to being loaded up. So just keep those things in mind. If you were going to build the AT later... decat headers, an exhausting, a tune and suspension from racetech you could build put a sweet af TA and not worry about hauling a tent. If you're looking to go full adv? Get the lightest tent and sleeping pad you can.
@Rod990ktm
@Rod990ktm 4 месяца назад
Thanks. I really appreciate your answer. I’m coming from a 2007 KTM 990 and then a 2014 1200GSA… I’m now looking for a 300 - 500 kms riding area and going off road. As per your comments the TA may be a good option. I agree at not carrying much stuff, I’m minimal on that area. I’m not getting younger and the less weight is always welcome to maneuver the bike on tactical trails. I will need to research for Tubeless wheels upgrade if I consider the TA. Maybe the AT Wheels fit? Thanks again
@steve_kamrad5216
@steve_kamrad5216 4 месяца назад
@Rod990ktm oh well you should go back to the 990 then. Not really but kinda. A 790 adventure r might be the right ticket too. Coming from those two "premium" bikes, you might want to stay in the "really good suspension" and layout kind of area then. Buuttttt the Tiger 900 RP might actually be the right choice, and the tubeless wheels on the RP really handle some shit.
@alexstan5358
@alexstan5358 Месяц назад
@steve_kamrad5216 So KTM790 new model is a better bike, to bad that this TA is bare bones. Needs 5000$ of extras to be similar in equipment as KTM, it does not even have bash plate ,Seriously, bash plate is 750$, no tubeless? Traction control, ABS and rider modes are a good representation of the degradation of society. Learn to ride a motorcycle. I for the life of me cannot understand someone who would want a bike to give them less HP than it is capable of. If my bike could have 1000hp I would take it. You know that right handle bar grip controls the power to the wheel right? Who would want traction control to stop you from sliding the back tire or doing a wheelie. LEARN TO RIDE NERDS. you are ruining motorcycles for the uncastrated.
