Kawasaki have rolled out the new 451 cc parallel-twin to the Z500 in 2024, so I've spent a couple of weeks with the bike to see what's improved, if the performance gains make a difference and how the bike stacks up to an even sharper line of competition than ever.

No reviewer mentions the fact that the Australian spec is about 3hp down on power from the previous 400 and about 8hp down from the US 500s. I live in the Pacific and the LAMS restrictions do not apply and wonder if the hp restrictions is ecu based or a throttle based?

Yea, I've seen people mentioning it has more power, even though here at least it has less. I don't think it would be throttle based if I had to take a guess. Probably an ECU/tune thing and most likely done for emissions. It looks like EU/UK/AUS get the slightly lower power model and the US gets a 41 hp/37.5 kW version.

Good engine, no doubt. I bet it's fun to ride. I don't like its style, but maybe I need to see it in the 'flesh'. It would look better in green, but I prefer the Eliminator. Decent dash. I rather like loud engines. For example KTMs. I agree with you about unnecessary tech, Kris. Good review. Nick

I’m looking at to upgrade to this over my cb125. How would this do on the most test ? I am quite short which is why I am leaning towards this bike. It feels way more comfortable than a cb125.

If you're comfortable on the bike you shouldn't have a problem, it's a little more nippy at low speeds than the old 400s with a bit of extra torque, but still very manageable and quite a light bike.
