2024 Lexus GX550 Overtrail POV cold start and off-road driving.
When I first stepped into the all-new GX, I already felt a little resentment knowing that I wasn’t going to hear the glory of the old 1UR-FE V-8 fire up under the hood. I was greeted with a satisfactory ASMR cold start from the new familiar-sized 3.4-liter twin-turbo V-6. The new powerplant is good for 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. It’s not the V-8, but the displacement gives me echoes of the 3.4 V-6 from the 90s/00s and whooshes to life in the way Toyota/Lexus motors traditionally do, and for that I can appreciate.
Stepping in, I initially felt a little disappointed with the interior overall. For nearly $70k? Doors that sound like you’re having a sword fight with empty paper towel rolls? And some of the plastics and surfaces are just straight up cheap feeling. But, $70k gets you the ability to handle nearly an off-road condition without concern, while maintaining a comfortable on-road presence and being surrounded by the latest tech and safety. I can get on board with trading luxury for capability.
