Can a car this small really offer luxury?
The Lexus LBX is here to make you think differently about whether you need a huge SUV for a high-end experience.
The new hybrid only Lexus LBX 2024 model range is tiny - just under 4.2 metres long - but with a big old dollop of luxe and plush thrown in.
There are some items that prestige SUV customers might be left wanting for, but for those who are looking to get into their first car from a luxury brand, or maybe they're weighing this smaller crossover up against larger mainstream models, it does make a bit of sense.
I've named a few alternatives in my review, and here's a list you might want to take a look at:
Honda HR-V - • Not like it used to be...
Toyota C-HR - • 2024 Toyota C-HR hybri...
Skoda Kamiq - • $10K more expensive no...

Excellent review of a nicely presented small SUV. This must be the cheapest Lexus. The interior seems well designed and comfortable. I’m not into hybrids and prefer EV’s, and the battery range is rather limited, but even so it would be cheap to run in an urban setting. If I was in the market for a comfortable small SUV I’d consider the LBX and I’d choose it ahead of Skoda. Thanks for an interesting review.

My parents went to a Lexus dealership last month and looked at the larger NX. He found it a little too big, and too expensive for the hybrid versions, of which there was a six month's long wait for, anyway. The dealer told him a new, smaller model was on the way and suggested he come back for a test drive when it arrives. A week later, he revisited the dealership and checked out the new model, the LBX. He slid himself in behind the wheel and quickly discovered he could barely fit inside it. He found it drove nicely, but was too cramped inside to treat seriously as a long term purchase. It's astounding the Lexus offer's nothing between the NX, and the LBX. So he walked across to the Toyota mob over the road, and tested the new CH/R, which was bigger, offered hybrid, and ticked every box for him. The ungainly rear styling of the previous model was now gone, and he found it easy to navigate around. The only negatives were the three month wait and the high price. He couldn't buy the vehicle he actually test drove. He gets his in June. Lexus needs something CH/R sized.

I have owned Lexus since the is200 was first released nearly 25 years ago. Since that time, the brand has continued to go downhill. This is a glorified Yaris. It doesn’t even have rear air vents for gods sake. How can you call it a luxury car?

Carsales Australia just did a review on it. This is what their motoring editor wrote in the “what’s it like to drive” section: “There’s clearly been an attempt to imbue the 2024 Lexus LBX with some big-car gravitas. It steers with some heft and sits quite solid and planted on the road, despite its diminutive size and light kerb weight (1330kg 2WD or 1415kg in AWD form). Add in a significant amount of noise deadening of various types and the LBX is also more remote from engine, road and tyre noise than a typical small car. It’s still there, but dulled. In 2WD or AWD form it is a well-resolved and enjoyable small car to drive. Its small size makes it nippy around town and its well-resolved dynamics make it entertaining on the open road. Lexus has taken the same TNGA-B platform as the Yaris Cross for the LBX, but stiffened it to make it more sporting. For all the work by Lexus engineers, the LBX’s origins are undeniable. There’s still some triple-cylinder growl evident from the engine under acceleration (the sound enhancement is, er, subtle) and the wheelbase isn’t long enough to stop the ride getting a bit jiggy on the rough stuff. That especially applies at low speeds. At higher speeds it improves, but never disappears. That applies in the 2WD fitted with a torsion beam rear axle and the AWD, which swaps to a more compact independent set-up to help the electronic AWD gubbins fit. The performance from the powertrain is far from luxurious. Call it adequate rather than abundant. There’s no doubt electrification provides assistance, especially from a standstill, but you’re keeping up with the traffic in this car, not sprinting ahead. Lexus claims a 9.2sec 0-100km/h time for the 2WD and 9.6sec for the heavier AWD. It feels about right. Funnily enough, there’s no sports mode to elevate the drivetrain and the Sports Luxury’s paddle shifters provide little more assistance than a placebo. Left to its own devices, the CVT does some of that inane buzzing commonly found with CVTs, but it’s not too awful.” www.carsales.com.au/editorial/details/lexus-lbx-2024-review-145226/

@@therightcarsorry mate. I meant no offence. I just wanted to point out to all the 25 year olds that this is in fact not good value, a luxury car or by any mean’s substantially different from the Yaris Cross on which it’s based. Everyone was giving this car credit but no one seems to realise it’s just more Lexus jacking up the price and giving us less. They have not differentiated this car enough to warrant the 20k+ price difference over the equivalent Yaris cross. I have watched a couple of reviews where this point was mentioned. John Pappas’ interview on the car showed just how much regard he has for the Aussie public and their intelligence in my opinion. It was like he couldn’t help but laugh when he mentioned the price.

Thanks for your comment. Yes there are foot vents - reviewers know that when you’re carsick, having cool feet isn’t going to help, but having a breeze on your face will. Or even just if you’re sitting in a car and it’s a bit warm… directional air vents are important as a family feature.

I'm so disappointed with this car post my test drive today.. my God, it's a strict 2 seater. There is next to no legroom in the back with your shins brushing against the lower frame of the seat in front. You can't even stretch your feet out under the front seat. That said, for two people this is perfect. Impressively quiet, but you can hear the engine when you give it the beans especially above 50 kmph. The HUD display is phenomenal, the mark levinson sound system is next-level. The back seat just kills it.

Why call this a SUV? It's a hatchback. I don't get the idea of calling everything a SUV now. According to FORD the definition of a SUV is "An SUV is a Sport Utility Vehicle. Powered for performance, an SUV should stand up to tough conditions and harsh environments, without compromising on interior comforts.". This Yaris (Strike) Lexus does not qualify being called a SUV. It does not "perform", it will most like not survive tough conditions and its small therefore compromising comfort.

A small hatchback is ideal for economy and manoeuvrability and is all we need (we're in our 70s) for our short local runs, but we insist on quality. As an alternative, the Mazda CX30 hybrid would offer fair competition. In fact, I'd rate it slightly ahead in that its ICE motor doesn't require a transmission as it's only there to spin the generator to charge the battery.
