2024 Mercedes GLS 450: Is The New GLS Worth It? 

Mechanical Engineer here German American from Michigan car guy, Mercedes buf. I have been driving Mercedes benz sedans and SUV's for my entire life since 1998, when I got my license. Why I say stick with the GLE 450 4 matic for the following reasons. #1 you get the SAME inline 6 engine that everyone duels over on the GLS. If you do not have a very large get the GLE why? 1- Price the base GLE 350 4 Matic comes in at $61,000 new, after taxes and registration you are looking at about $65,000. The base GLS 450 4 matic is $88,000 so after taxes and registration, you are talking about $95,000 a difference of $30,000. Even used, you will notice a difference if you do the 3 years 40% trick the GLS will cost you about $60,000 out the door used, the GLE will be no more than $45,000 so a difference of $15,000. EDMUNDS rated the GLS slightly better than the GLE 8.6 vs 8.4 respectively but there are advantages to the GLE. You will get with the GLE 450 better gas you will get 19-26 MPG vs 18-23 on the big GLS. The $90,000 sticker tag is going to keep most people AT BAY on the GLS and opt for the more sensible GLE. It is basically the same concept, the only difference is a GLS is a blown up + size GLE with a large 3rd row. I recommend and EDMUNDS does as well, to pay the extra $5,000 and bump to the upgraded 450 4 matic engine, don't go with the 350 4 matic because your gas does not improve that much instead of 19-26 you might get 20-27 a mile more but you get over 100 HP bump So to sum it up if you have a large family and you can afford $65,000-90,000 USD more power to you, get the E. If you are not apart of the 1% like the rest of the world but still well to do and can afford a luxury SUV, go with the GLE. Some drawbacks to the Mercedes besides the price is well Mercedes does not go for SPORTY feel. If you want that then go with the BMW or the Porsche. Mercedes goes for Luxury and smoothness. When you drive in a Mercedes, you hear, nothing. I like the Lexus ES 300 H F Sport for anyone who has driven this it is the best bang for your buck, MPG and enough HP to get the job done. Nobody will mistake it for a Mercedes but at least you are getting good gas mileage. I drive 90 miles or 144 KM 5 days a weeek so that is important.

I love it that german car producers still go with inline 6 or V8 engines in the US. Sadly in Europe we get smaller and smaller engines, so sad. Thank you for the good review, like your work Ben! Have a nice day!

Exterior styling is nothing great. However, the interior is phenomenal. So far ahead of a Cadillac Escalade or Lincoln Navigator. Price actually seems pretty fair.

First drive review I’ve seen of ‘24 GLS. I do like the refresh. Steering wheel looks great. Strong contender. Wonder how it compares to X7?

If i compare this gls450 to defender130 p400. So the both inline sixes prdouce same powering almost. I think defender is affordable! I know gls is absolutely great. But the cost........

Mercedes leather has had that same grain pattern since forever. it's very distinctive.

Is that pebbled leather on the seats the same low quality base leather (before the merino upgrade) on BMWs?

Hmmm- I wonder if they have made the exhaust outlets real for MY24'? I can tell you that the 23' outlets are fake/faux, a total turnoff for me
