However, doesn’t buying to unlock that mean we are buying the part of the battery that is degraded? Over time if I don’t unlock the battery will degrade but my useable won’t drop until it gets down to 68 kWh of battery. If I buy the extra mileage i immediately see degradation.

Wow that is extremely impressive charging curve and will make quite a bit of difference with saving the 5K from the long range and still get the same 7,500 from the US government. Have a M3 rwd lfp and want a MY and this may fit the bill. 10-80 average at 132 KW is so fast in 22 minutes. Way faster than my m3 lfp. Thanks for letting us know about the battery capacity and actual miles in the video. Super informative. Thanks dude.

Seems to me the software lock achieves a few things. 1. Artificially keeps people from over charging extending battery life. 2. Allows Tesla to feed in excess capacity (if they want to) as the battery degrades over time maintaining use experience. 3. Like you discovered, allows for a decent charging curve with a relatively “weak” charging speed which has its own host of site and grid benefits if implemented broadly.

Pay for play. It's how Tesla differentiates models. You want faster charging, pay for the higher end model. Same reason Tesla used to disable speakers that were installed in base model 3 to help differentiate it from the long range.

Despite being now a bit out of date, this is still relevant if only to showcase that Teslas can charge fast if they want them to. It’s shocking to contrast this Y’s charging performance vs Highland Model 3 that takes a mediocre 30 mins to go 10-80% and it does 100 miles in the Out of Spec 10% Challenge.

I am not sure your age but you look young as well as the team at out of spec, the reason I bring this up is your 100 mile charger hop is not what older people or most want to think about doing so if the goal is to get people comfortable with EV's to move to this more sustainable future then I would suggest showing people how they can do trips with one or two charges max over a 600 mile trip not this hopping chargers every 100 miles. this its why a lot of people are waiting for battery technology to reach 500 to 600 mile range because most people just want to be charged at home and get to their destination with minimal stops. It's absolutely possible to do close to 600 miles with one stop when you leave you home with a full charge. This is what most people want and believe me I understand thats not your style or out of spec style but you really need to consider your age and I know thats difficult because you cant make yourself older so you dont know how you will think when you are older. You are doing a disservice to getting people to switch to EV's when you are saying stop driving every 100 or so miles to charge. I understand it may not be your mission to get people to switch but it also isn't making EV's look like better technology when you put it in the context of having to stop to charge every 100 or so miles.

Have a MY LR order on hold and your videos are making me seriously consider the RWD with the data you provide. The Tesla sales rep I was working with told me they recommend to charge to 80% on the RWD which contradicts the real world test you performed - he has been “reassigned”. Appears the charge curve, ability to charge more often to 100% and a $1500 to $2000 upgrade at a future date (which makes the RWD a LR - minus the dual motors) makes the RWD a better buy. Leaning towards changing my order to the RWD as acceleration and AWD are not needed for us. Am I missing any other advantages to the RWD? Thanks for doing this, great video.

There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics. I’m a 2023 Tesla Model Y Long Range owner, so I’m very pro EV. However, without reviewing the raw data of that study myself, I highly skeptical of its results because they differ too widely from numerous peer reviewed scientific studies on the effect that average charging C-Rate has on battery health. 0.25 to 0.33C average is optimal for maximizing battery life for most battery chemistries. Especially if it starts at about 0.5C for low state of charge and tapers off to about 0.2C at high SOC. Research the less biases scientific studies on this and you’ll see it makes much more than a 1% capacity difference over the long run for a battery vs fast charging at an average of 2C, for example. Even with great thermal management and a variable charge rate.
