Before you start finishing the basement, I'd advise you get the water/flooding issue assessed and addressed. Judging by the visible water damage on the walls and the jackpost, it looks as though the basement has flooded in the past and may do so again. It's hard to tell from a video if there really is an issue, and I hope for your sake there isn't, but I'd hate for you to spend money to finish the basement and then find out it floods.

I noticed that too. Since a contractor is coming out to bid the job, hopefully they are a quality contractor who will not sweep water issues behind new drywall.

Thank you for the advice!! We live in the northeast where it freezes and thaws for most of the spring. It’s not really water damage, but more like mineral deposited from condensation through the cinder block walls. It’s been checked by our home inspector, the banks home inspector ( a condition of the type of loan we got), and 2 contractors. What they will do is sand the mineral deposits off and seal the walls with what’s called Dryloc, it’s a masonry waterproofer.

@@athomewithelizabeth3901 I'm familiar with Dryloc - but rather than mineral deposits I thought I saw a section of your basement wall with worrisome dark mold like deposits. On older homes sometimes it is necessary to have a specialist dig around the outside of the foundation and use modern methods and materials to make it more impenetrable, and build a system of engineered rocks to give a different path for water to drain away. I was concerned about your basement because you plan to use it for bedrooms and living. Mold in homes is a serious health issue, especially for the younger ones and anyone with a weak immune system. Watch your video and you can see the area of my concern with what looks like dark mold deposits. Best wishes.

Wow. This house has great bones. It’s built better than any of today’s new homes. I would keep that tile in the bathroom it beautiful. Very retro.

Thank you so much!!! Yes, it's one thing we liked about the house, not only was it well built, it was so well cared for!!! We are actually only the 3rd family to live in it. The original family lived here for 30 years and then the people we bought it from lived here for 34 year!!!! The funny thing about that "tile" is it's the plastic tile that was so popular in the 50/60's when the house was built!!! It's is great shape!!!! I'm not sure if we'll keep it, but I'm definitely removing the wall paper eventual!!! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!!! It's greatly appreciated!!!

What a gorgeous home. It looks like you have so much space your kitchen is nice and big. And even though the cabinets and appliances like the stove and oven aren't updated they are beautiful. The cabinets are in such good shape. And I absolutely love your old oven! Why replace it if it works. Nothing that is made today like things were made back then. I am excited to see what you do with your new home! My mom is from the East Coast and I had a great aunt that lived in Lancaster Pennsylvania and you're a brick home. Reminds me of hers.

I love it!!!!! I'm old school and wouldn't change a thing. But, I know younger people like modern stuff, not me. I'm almost 65 and love the older style. Again, I love it and I'm so happy for you and your family! By the way, although I now live in Texas, I was born and raised in Stoughton Massachusetts. My favorite part of New England is Camden Maine. I miss new England say bad. We are financially stuck in this horrible place in Texas forever. Without going into further detail there were a few family members whom mislead us and that's why we moved here.❤️🦋❤️🦋❤️🦋❤️🦋❤️🦋

I the bottom backside of your upstIrs linen closet, i see a board. Is that a laundry shoot for drpping laundry to washer dryer area below in basement? I hD one years ago in another house. Look behind that board and downstIrs above laundry, look up. I loved that perk.

It takes lots of money to update these homes. Electrical, plumbing, wiring, sewer, water, not to mention old floors, kitchen and bathrooms . Don’t see the point in buying a house that has to practically be rebuilt. I guess it’s different strokes for different folks.

We don’t actually need to update anything in this house!!! It’s all been updated within the last 10 years!! Also this house was built during a time period that builder/contractor were not out just to make a buck, they were focused on building quality homes. But you are right different strokes for different folks. I’ll take a well cared for 1960’s home over a sub par built today home. Our walls are real plaster and the floors are real wood. I live in an are in Mi thats got these huge 3 story homes with balconys on each level and i hate those homes there so cold looking and not cozy looking at all. Since you have a large family, I would suggest you keep that secondary cold storage pantry area. The kitchen is nice but it doesn’t look like it has enough space for you to store food for all your boys you and your husband, unless you go shopping once a week, just a suggestion. Also like a previous commenter has stated, make sure that there hasn’t been any past water damage in your basement before you start spending money on adding rooms. Nice tour.

Thanks for the tips! It has been checked and it’s more like mineral deposits. We live in the north east and it freezes and thaws here all spring long and it can cause like condensation on basement wall that cause the build up!! They’ll sand it down and then treat it with a masonry waterproofing called Dryloc. 👏🏻 Thank you so much for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it!! 😊

@@athomewithelizabeth3901 Especially for your older children, please spend some time with them to seriously talk about family finances. I'm a teacher in my 60's and one of the biggest reasons why many of my students struggle when they go out on their own as adults is that they either never had responsible parents to model family finances or their parents never shared family financial planning with them. Many years ago our schools offered home economics classes. Helping your children to understand budgeting and frugal living skills (I.E., how NOT to waste the resource of money), career planning, etc. is one of the greatest gifts of knowledge that you can give your children. Its not knowledge that can be shared or learned in 30 minutes or an hour - you need to include your older children in the behind the scenes decisions. Be specific, share the actual numbers for income, taxes, insurance and everything else. When you model it this way it will be much easier for your children to develop healthy personal finance habits to use when they are on their own.
