I can't believe im most excited about a pot lid... but here we are. Looking forward to the info! Also I already bought the new rapide sl so don't break my heart and tell me it stinks
Another thing I like about the lid idea (besides being able to hold a lighter) is that is sounds like it snaps on and stays in place. I've just about had it with my Toaks pot that requires a big orange thing to keep the lid in place inside my pack. And yes, I tried a rubber band once, and lost it the first day out. A lid should be able to stay securely on its pot imo.
Mystery Ranch packs are so heavy. Surely with the Alpha Direct socks you’d have to layer them with other socks? And would they actually work like the tops for moisture management? As you’re compressing them by stepping on them and having them inside shoes / boots, not like something on your upper body. That toothbrush head is super dumb too - one slip of the hand and your gums will get torn open by the metal spoon / fork handle.
Kakwa 55 is sooo 2023 😛 it's all about the Wapta 30 now (in all seriousness, Kakwa 55 is probably the best mass produced framed pack on the market, and what I chose to hike the PCT)
If u do the 70lb pack video, it would be cool if u tried to actually fit that much gear instead of half gear half water. I think it would be funny to have a full glamping setup on the trails lol
SkyGoat - That's my new go-to for mid layer warmth. Plus, the maker's HQ is right here near Breck, CO. Very similar to that UL fabric...made from recycled plastic bottles. Its below zero in Colorado today and this SkyGoat is a perfect UL hoodie for errands around town, plus goes well with my SpeedGoats that Justin told me about :) (I'm new to this whole hiking gear community)
Looking forward to hearing about the Farpoint gear. I have an alpha direct top and have been really enjoying it, but it is not the most intuitive thing to use so I appreciate hearing about how other people use them. Thanks for all of the great videos!
Loved the Kakwa 55 on my AT thru hike in 2023. I think the most I carried was 30lbs with full food and water carries. Very comfortable in comparison to my Osprey. Lasted well, one small hole in a side pocket due to sliding on rocks in the Whites and Maine. Already patched with a few stitches. No holes in the mesh. It still has another thru hike in it.
Can you tell where the Kawka did better vs Osprey considering comfort? Because i have Osprey and have tried several ul packs and none them came close to Osprey in carry comfort. Maybe this one could 🤔
@@jonihamalainen6176 I had more back muscle pain when carrying the osprey. Unlike some ultra light packs, the Kakwa has a frame and load lifters. If my back or shoulders started to get tired, I could adjust the pack slightly to put more weight on my hips. I could do the same with the osprey, but my back still burned by the end of the day. Maybe just because the osprey was a couple of pounds heavier. I don’t know.
I had a Mystery Ranch a long time ago (like back in 2008) I really liked it, but when I decided to prioritize weight, I sold it. It was only a 30 liter backpack but weighed like 4 or 5 lbs. Nice pack, but heavy and, at the time I had four or five backpacks so I saved my expedition-size pack and sold that one.
I’ve got the old Rapide SL and it’s fantastic! Thinking about getting one for the wife, but I’m hesitant about the new model. Looking forward to your thoughts on this new version.
The Rapide is significantly warmer than the Zoom. I would put it somewhat warmer than the Tensor and the Xlite. It’s good down to just below freezing by itself, and with a CCF pad like the Gossamer Gear 1/8” inch pad under it and appropriate insulation, I’ve taken the Rapide to the teens (F°) and been comfortable. Highly recommend it.
I used the Kakwa 55 last summer hiking the WCT. Had 35lbs everything in including water at the start, and it held that weight fantastic. With no suspension or trampoline backing, you will get a sweaty back, but wasn't a deal breaker for me. Interested to hear your thoughts on it!
Mystery Ranch suspension sucked for me. I had a Bozeman Terraplane back in the 90s and it was incredible, but those packs weren’t one size fits all “adjustable”.
For the record, the Alpha Direct (Mesh) products perform best when worn underneath an "outer garment". Alpha Direct socks? .....there's gonna be Alpha Direct everything soon.....🤣
I gave up on inflatable pillows...I have half a dozen of them, mostly Nemo, but other too, and the way they feel, and also the noise is just no go...I should have given up on them earlier
How much gear do ultralight backpackers use up over a lifetime? If you just went a bit heavier you could get stuff that lasts and leave less trash in the garbage.
No need for that fake background to show backpacks. Just film it in front of anything else. :) I mean the software made background. It is weird on the eyes, the edges are cut off as well - like the strings etc. It is fine if you show the backpack in front of the cheap contrast looking fabric.
@@JustinOutdoors I didn't say the background does not matter, I meant the artificial, software assisted background is weird to look at :) The fake/artificial background cuts the edges of the subject and it looks artificial. Eg are the strings that were cut off with just the ending flying by themselves. Not a big deal but my eyes felt the difference.
The Farpointe Octo hoodie looks interesting. I have thus far avoided buying Alpha Direct hoodies, as I have read so many complaints about how delicate and non-durable the fabric is. Makes me skeptical of GGG reviews, as they all seem to be 5-star.
I've had an alpha shirt for 3-4 years with a lot of use and it is in great condition. I don't baby in for washing either. I don't bushwack in it or use it for extended periods directly under a pack; if that is your use-case, then something else is probably better.
I used a Senchi Hoodie on my thru hike of the AT in 2022. I used it with a wind jacket and LOVED this combination. The wind jacket is probably what kept the Senchi hoodie in good shape. Together, they seemed just as warm and my down jacket (which I never used again), and they can get wet and dry very quickly (when compared to down). I just bought the pants because of this video, and will pair them with wind pants to replace my down pants.
@ValsLife1 i also subbed my down hoodie with alpha shirt plus windshirt, with the same result. I just skied using alpha direct pants under ski pants shell in 15 degrees and was warm
Alpha Direct is legit, but after buying and trying four different AD hoodies I keep going back to my Mountain Hardware AirMesh hoody. It's not only more durable, but it feels and fits better too.
Lmao we haven’t used those in the military since OIF 1. Garbage frame with a horrible metal bar digging into your lower back. There’s no reason you posted this other than to be a contrarian.
Hello sir, I just wanted to give you some helpful criticism. Obviously, you do what you want - it’s your channel! But I do know a thing about holding attention with people and… Well, the use of your green screen is very… distracting. I would recommend learning how to do proper green screening or don’t do it at all. I think what would be helpful is your backgrounds - they’re too blurry so it takes the viewer out of the video and now they can bounce off the video. If I were you, I’d look at the analytics of your videos and verify if people are bouncing off at the times of the green screen. This would help you decide whether or not the information I’m giving you is accurate or not. For all reality knows, the green screen effect is okay and nobody bounces off during those times. And that’s wonderful. Good. My info was useless and it means you’re doing a fantastic job. I know each time I saw the green screen, I kept wanting to bounce off and the only reason why I stayed is because my curiousity of the items overpowered my will to bounce off so I stayed. Hope this was helpful.
@@CharmingGecko I'm just saying there's literally no point all tents do the same job as not even like us sleeping bag with different temperatures it literally just sheds rain tents are all The same value
I have a top from Macpac that is like the see through pants you were showing, its super warm ever though its light weight. I wear only a t shirt under it even in winter at times
I had a Kakwa 55 shipped in to me on the CDT last year to deal with the heavier food carries. With 6 days of food, and at times up to 5 liters of water, I never felt the weight on my shoulders. It quickly became my favorite load hauler pack.
Mystery Ranch, like most hunting geared packs, are overbuilt ie unnecessarily heavy. For 100L, that's actually not unreasonable, but still a lot of weight. My Kuiu hunting pack is 60L, under 4 lbs, can pack out a deer, and rides much more comfortable than other brands I've tested. It's also big enough for me to camp for a week and has a sling for my rifle. But at under 4 lbs at that size, my hunting pack easily doubles for backpacking. Any hunters out there, I'd recommend looking into Kuiu first.
Toothbrush looks wild and the pillow and tent very cool. The giant pack looks like a 90s throwback when huge packs were in vogue. Or something you give to your buddy; they carry it all, you remain ultrlight. 😂. Wonder if a finger toothbrush would work too. 🤔
Picked up a Rapide in 2023 and it's the only reason I am able to leave the hammock at home. Hearing that they changed the insulation now makes me think I was a year early pulling the trigger, but I'm still super happy with it.
You mean there's gear that I've got before you ever recommended it?! 😉 😂 I got a Kakwa 55 last year so that I have more carry capacity when I have my dog with me. She has her own pack, but she's small and can't carry a whole lot! She carries some of her food, and I carry her sleep system and more food. I really like the hip belt on this pack. And it carries really well. I'm going to have to take a look at those socks! They look pretty cool.
I just ordered their socks! Bonus, they're a matching color to my top & bottom (camp pj's). Fantastic gear! What gsm are the pants/socks that you're testing?
I’d love to see a review of seek outside divide or one of there other big packs. It’s like the mystery ranch pack interms of carrying capacity possibly more but it’s way lighter and just looks really cool
I’m really keen on the Big Agnes Rapide SL. Hopefully you’ll have a good experience with it. I’ve been looking at this pad and the Tensor for quite sometime. I had hoped the zoom at it all but I have read a few not so favourable reviews.
I’m actually keen to try the brush, I don’t see the hygiene as an issue as the argument also applies to the use of any utensil or a regular brush but it’s without the weight or need to just throw out the plastic handle of a regular brush.
You got the blue octa cruiser! I hope they bring that color back. Love my alpha cruiser from them but I ordered a 120 gsm senchi one for colder weather mid layer. Very interested to see how that one works
Curious, how are you liking the Senchi hoody? I've been using the 90gsm hoodie from Farpointe that I love but was looking for something for colder temps.
The hygiene aspect of the toothbrush is interesting, more so with what is on the handle of the spoon and not really on the brush. Seems an easy way to get poop in the mouth. 😬
I'd also worry about the metal of the spoon scraping my gums and teeth. It should have a silicon sheath to go over the spoon handle, not just the hole plug.
@@BackcountryForward ha! Okay, allow me to explain. 😂 You do your duty and don’t get your hands as clean as you think you did. You then grab that spoon by the handle with the contaminated hand. Then that evening or next morning that poop that was on your hand, is now on your spoon, making its way into your mouth. Hence, poop in the mouth! This is why I don’t ever let someone else put their hand INTO my bag of snacks. Pour out of the bag only, ever!

Unfortunately the same major fails ,ie, No mesh on the back of lightweight packs.Having a plastic tooth brush head on a metal spoon etc . Companies arent inovating. Seems like only cottage industries are doing so.
