I used a Petrel with a Soto Windmaster on the PCT in April, and it performed even during a 70 mph windstorm on San Jacinto. It's heavier and skinnier than I'd like, but in windy and cold conditions this is by far the best system I'm aware of. I did replace the heavy lid though with a cheap tupperware lid that weighs like 5 grams. I also bought the Mythic G and returned it almost immediately. It was leaking a lot of down and the 7D material seemed really delicate, so I decided to go with the Mythic Alpine instead, which is more durable and has a better price to warmth ratio. Also worth noting that the TILT material interferes with avalanche beacons and stuff like that.
8 дней назад
I also have WindMaster and I’m about to pull the trigger on Petrel. How was the fuel consumption? Does the saved fuel even out the weight penalty in your mind?
@Andy-Mesa
@Andy-Mesa 8 дней назад
No, it doesn't even out the weight penalty (as seen in GearSkeptic's videos) but it does allow you to light it up in conditions you otherwise would not be able to which is the primary appeal to me.

@@Andy-Mesa Gotchu. Checking GearSkeptic for the vid, thanks.
@fredrilj
@fredrilj 7 дней назад
The Firemaple Petrel pot + Soto Windmaster stove is a nice combo. As seen in the GearSkeptics videos it will boil faster and in more wind than others, so it is a great alternative to the more fragile ultralight alternative with Toakes pot + BRS 3000t stove. For a lighter, but more expensive alternative, I have found the Jetboil Stash pot+lid (145 grams) to be lighter than the Petrol pot+lid (162 grams).
@Andy-Mesa

@@fredrilj Petrel lid is useless though. It sticks when you boil water, and is waaay too heavy.

I managed to obtain Nordisk Stoke Jacket on sale last year, less than 200gr , top product if you are in Europe. I think no magic there, all these UL jacket having so tiny amount of insulation that unlikely to deal with colder condition. But still play a role of emergency item when you dont expect anything cold and have tiny and lightweight jacket just in case.

I just picked up the new All-Season Tensor and took it out on the CDT for a section hike. I was amazed at how warm it was. I agree you can actually feel the heat from my body radiating back off the pad. I am optimistic that the new materials will be more durable than the original because mine started leaking from the welded seams after about a year and a half. Thanks for another awesome video!

Justin, I have tried the OLICAMP Hard Anodized XTS Pot, 1-Litre pot for a 2 person trip. I found it to improve fuel efficiency and boils really fast when I want to crank the burner and heat quickly. You can use it with almost any stove. I am really impressed with this type of cookpot. I think the Firemaple Petrel is probably better for a solo trip if you have a 3-prong stove. There are other similar pots on the market including some larger ones that might be good for winter or large groups. I think you will like this type of pot for your winter trips especially.

I have the Fire Maple Petrel Pot and three stoves that fit it, the Windmaster Triflex, the Fire Maple Polaris Regulator and the Fire Maple Greentree. For me the Windmaster Triflex is the most fiddly of the three to fit on the Petrel, the detachable pot stand on the Windmaster renders the stove useless if you lose them and fuel economy is average possibly from slight oxygen starvation from a burner that wasn’t designed to be jammed up inside heat transfer fins. The Polaris Regulator fits and works fine but doesn’t have an igniter and the Greentree has a great igniter but doesn’t have a regulator but works fine in moderate weather and only costs $20. I find myself mostly using the Greentree stove because I usually hike in moderate conditions. If it’s blowing a hoolie I take the MSR Windburner which is impervious to any wind short of a hurricane but is heavy. No pot /stove combination is perfect for all conditions. Just my 2 cents.

Ooooh, I've been eyeballing both of those packs. Since you have tried both, can you tell me how low the second chest strap can go? My holy grail is to be able to have the top one about armpit level and the bottom one right at my underbust, so bottom of the pecs for a dude? I actually added a third strap to my current bag just to have this positioning, but I'd love to find one that already does. Stef likely would appreciate this too!

I think temp rating on a down jacket is definitely all in the rest of your clothing as well. If you had changed into dry merino base layers and had a mid layer as well plus the jacket I think it would perform perfectly it’s specs - the clothing I saw you in in the video didn’t look like enough for the conditions once it got dark and cold to me personally!

Just received the Petler pod to have a look . The plastic lid stucks on the pod when it gets hot, so I replaced it with titanium lid from another pod. Re how fast it works, thats all for the price of consuming insane amount of gas , these stoves are quite powerfull and diameter of the pot is tiny, so its very inefficient way to boil the water, and yea, no one cares about couple of minutes outdoor except its a race. Everybody care about fuel consumption. I did my own tests, with pocket rocket2 and brs3000, and when you set the output to eco mode, the consumption is exactly the same in room env ie 5gr for 500ml (sorry Im in Europe) comparing to msr titanium pod without HE. And lastly its seems designed especially for they own stoves and grooves below are offset indeed, however my pocket rocket 2 fits ok and brs300 also fits but some wiggling is required. Some people bend the legs a bit to make it more comfortable. also I removed the heavy handle and used neoprene sleeve instead, I do this still think, that HE make sense in real world scenarios.

just saying you cant fit most 3 arm stoves to the pot. they either have an angle to the arms (brs3000 ) or they have hinge to allow holding on normal pots.. the gap is too small. the pot works great - if you use an ethanol mix, a trangia is great. gas is great too. the burner is quite expensive in comparison to the pot. buy the combo and save money.

@@Andy-Mesa I'm not sure they are so different. Both have 7d fabrics and both have 1000 FP down. Even having more down, but it looked to me not so good. In fact, in Europe it's easy to find that rab jacket for -40 or -30% discount, and it's been like that for months (since before Christmas) my Spydrr instinct tells me there is something off with that jacket. Old rab mythic with 1000 fo down that a friend of mine owns looks much better... Loftier, more like my plasma. .. Sunglasses strap system looks like a good idea ... Pack needs padding on all straps ,, needs hip belt to equalize weight from shoulders ... Needs load adjusters ,, pack is badly hanging on lower back ......put a pouch on hip belt front for a water bottle or put water bottle in shoulder pouch and bear spray in belt pouch or holster designed for it , for ready deployment ... all easy access ...... ... pack side pockets can hold a variety of gear options ,,, even EXTRA water bottle , not necessarily dedicated ...

.. NEMO also has another pad the Tensor Alpine at 4.9 R- value ,, I have had for about 3 years with NO problems ... Would have expected a good comment on comfort and warmth here ,, you're set up on a grass pad park surface .. next time go to a site at altitude and hard rock/dirt surface ... I'm sure it will perform just as well .... .... Running on trails with loaded pack is looking for a wreck waiting to happen ,,, and just stupid ...
