I hate when people say "the preseason means nothing". To me it shows a team's depth. When a starter goes down, the players that shined in the preseason step up

It is a mean nothing trial for rookies and washouts to maybe get a contract and a trip to the practice squad. Look up the leading quarterbacks in preseason the last 20 years. Yes it shows depth of a team but it doesn't affect the winnings and losses of teams for the regular season. Because a team or teams win or lose in preseason doesn't predict how a team will win or lose in the regular season because most of the starters in preseason aren't played that much. A quarter at most. So that's why they say it means nothing. Preseason doesn't determine a teams chances of a division championship, playoff game or a superbowl appearance or win of the superbowl. That's why it doesn't matter in that regards but it does show the coaches the athletic abilities of draft players along with other players for a short period of time of the game. If a starter goes down the players behind still would have to play anyways with or without a preseason. It just give those who aren't starters the opportunity to get a starting job or move up when asked to.
