Recently went to LA for holidays. Was blown away when I saw the Rivian in person and told my wife, if it ever comes to Australia, I'll buy one. I stand by that.
I may be wrong, but I beleive that some mining companies have brought a few Rivians to Australia for trials. I have always wanted one. I hope it won't be too long before they are available. Thanks Paul for the review.
I'm an Aussie who just moved to LA. Had current model X5M50i in Australia though pick up R1S in a fortnight. Its my first car outside a bimmer and I am very impressed.
It would cost a bomb in Australia but damn I want one 😂. Out of all the current evs this one is very well put together with the bonus of off-road capabilities.
Thanks Paul for another amazing review. This is the car we have been waiting for to come to Australia. Perfect for our camping with our two little puppies. No other car on the market has the room for our doggies and is an EV.
In answer to your initial question .. yes I'd love to see these in Australia .. they'll be prohibitively expensive for the majority of us though in R1 guise .. I think the R2 will be more appropriate for the Australian market and the price point. Love the review though, great to get an Aussie take on the vehicle escpaially from a quality stand point. Vibrating plastics even in cheap cars is annoying let alone something marketed as premium..
1. If you are forced to have quad motors to get to your workplace ? then you can probably afford this car because you'll get extra pay for hazardous work and being a specialist. 2. If you are aiming for a "people's car" ? then you can buy a Soviet Lada. Problem solved. Thank me later
I've had my R1S since October. Truly amazing. It rides higher than a Model X, and offers legitimate off-road capabilities. Plus, when I use conserve mode on the highway (and only for highway cruising, unless you want to turn your front tires into dust) I find it easier to achieve the range estimates in the R1S than in a Model X.
Great video Paul, Love my music so it's a shame to hear about the audio. That 3rd row could have been moved back a little too, worth noting though that the lip that the 3rd row creates when stored flat can be resolved by the underfloor storage lid sits up onto the back of the 3rd row seat creating a flatter floor.
With that kurbweight you would need at least a C1 license (for trucks) to drive that vehicle here in Europe or stick with a payload of 363 kgs. The torque is truly insane but the weight of that thing is absolutely ridiculous.
I really want to see both Rivian and Lucid come to Australia I'll never be able to afford one in my lifetime, but I'd much rather see them on the road than Mercedes ugly EV range.
Hello paul your the best at being a car journalist and i was just asking can you do a detailed review of the Mercades Amg gt 63 es performance the sedan one please thank you 😁😄👍
They are beautiful, but just not quite there for proper Australian offroad/touring yet. The R1T ute has ~620kg payload, I guess the wagon is similar. Given how many accesories we like to pile on our vehicles I can see that getting used up quick. Bars and RTT will screw range. May be good for city based tradie, but not at this price.
hi Paul. you can make the rear floor flat. that flap at the back actually lifts up and goes on an angle against the 3rd row seats. its sort of angles upwards. please refer to other rivian reviews.
Those were early pre-production prototypes. Did pretty good from what they showed, but I think like the Harley's there was probably a lot of teething problems and issues that were edited out of the final cut not wanting to show negative footage of their sponsors.
Been contacting Rivian, asking about an Australian release and even offering to promote a left hand drive model, every few months for a few years now. Would love to see a local R1T.
Can anybody please explain the purpose of these fancy ridiculous door handles on electric vehicles? Especially on a huge SUV? Reduce drag? This huge 'RIVIAN' logo at 23:00 makes more drag than normal door handle obviously. Crazy.
Rivian spotted in Australia last week by a keen-eyed observer (Drive, 'Rivian R1S electric SUV spotted in Australia', 11 March 2024). Would make sense, given Rivian have announced they're set to debut sales in the UK of the R1S (ie another right-hand drive market). Exy for sure, but best-in-class vehicles.
Driver+ is very good on roads where it works (most major highways in the US). Light capacitive touch let's it know you're paying attention. I'd say on par with Tesla basic autopilot. Not sure it works at all in Australia yet.
@Syitalian25 very nice! Yes here stateside, Rivian is now offering pretty good lease deals--- 559/month + 6k down..... so with those numbers-- one could lease an R1T for just a little bit over a Model Y! Yes, regarding Rivian's Highway Assist/Driver+, I hope it matches both GM supercruise and Tesla Enhanced Autopilot!🤞 Light capacitive touch is a lessor known but major benefit for us vs the older torque based steering wheels on teslas!
I have this Rivian in Limestone color….quad motors and fully loaded with the underbody plate. I ordered it before the price hike, so I am okay with the price…if I were to buy the same specs today with that price, it will be more than 100k US$ and I probably will not buy it.
Hmm, nice marketing touch referring to the petrochemical finishes as vegan. Very clever. It’s also really important to have those fancy aerodynamic door handles when you’re driving a box. Still looks pretty cool and quite traditional when compared to Elons piss trough.
I love Rivian enough that I would buy the Adventure version despite the defects mentioned, but, seriously, poor cameras? poor stereo? Seriously, Rivian? When you fork out 100K? wtf?
Nice as they may be I wouldn’t buy a very expensive car from a company that has never made a profit and its shares are down 90% over the last 3 years. I’ll let others deal with the financial risk for a while.
Paul while you are in the states I suggest driving a Tesla with FSD version 12 and seeing first hand why they are smashing self driving and also why in OZ FSD $10k will be worth its price in weight and gold. Also vision only in the Uk is better then parking sensors already, and will only get better.
And some deluded greenie will tell you it's environmentally friendly. 3 tons, huge wear on the roads and excessive wear of tyres which needs to be replaced more frequently.
I think these are absolutely absurd. If it comes to Oz I'll get one since if you can't beat them, join them. I will then take up two lanes when driving, take up more than one parking spot so no one can fit next to me and barely pass behind and mount footpaths when parking this in inner city streets. That and a 3 second 0-100 in what is basically a shipping container.
What's the gvm ? Vehicle weighing 3 tons you may not be able to take all your family members if you want to go shopping camping One way to pick your favourite child lol
This is an insanely poorley built and impractical vehicle for the price . Only gor people that can afford to ditch it almost immediately aftet purchase. And fair play to them.. Just the vehicle itself is quite terrible for anything but small urban, non towing ttips.
If by “dead” you mean selling more than ever with increasing sales year-on-year, with an ever-increasing sales percentage of all new cars sold being electric.
EVs were selling up until the huge amount of issues being exposed with ownership. Sales are now plummeting in the US and worldwide. Charging companies are pulling out of Australia which says a lot.
@@laceyunderall68 Plummeting in the US? They’re not. Per Bloomberg NEF, EV sales in North America were likely up 47% y-o-y in 2023 and are projected to be up 32% in 2024. In the EU & EFTA & UK, EV sales have grown by 29% y-o-y, 41% in the USA & Canada, and almost doubled in China. What a slump.
