On June 29th, 2024, Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart awarded the first Schweickart Prize to University of Maryland PhD candidate Joe DeMartini for his SUNSET Collaboration proposal. The award presentation included a Q&A with astronauts Nicole Stott and Steve Smith, as well as RU-vid celebrity Scott Manley. In addition to discussing his proposal, Joe shared how various mentors and unique experiences led to his passion for astronomy and teaching. This panel discussion was part of the Asteroid Day program held at the Chabot Space & Science Center.

Founded in 2023, the Schweickart Prize was established to enhance our capability to protect life on Earth from the potentially devastating consequences of an asteroid impact - planetary defense.
The prize recognizes graduate students for their innovative ideas and potential leadership in advancing planetary defense-related fields, including asteroid impact prediction, impact mitigation, mitigation law and policy development, impact economics, and planetary defense public education and communication.
