I don't get the comments, this is a first to market leader. All the things beind said was said about telsa. You need a company like taiga to push the market and the tech. It's not for me yet, but I'm glad to see a Canadian company push the industry and come out with something that is truly interesting and so close to the experience I'm used to in a sled.

Not really. Electric transportation is all about efficiency. Driving a Tesla down a paved road can be extremely efficient and the range is fantastic, unless its under a heavy load such as towing a 5000 pound camping trailer. Unfortunately, snow travel is often loaded with a LOT of drag resistance due to deep snow, or heavy slushy snow in conjunction with a tracked system which rolls along with great amounts of drag and resistance as well compared to a wheeled vehicle like a car. There's a lot to overcome here.

@@bedlambikes it has a 100km range as a first Gen. We aren't far away from solid state batteries which could triple that. Right now, I have a trail machice a polaris boost and titan. The nomad could even now replace my needs for what is use my titan for. Ie ide fishing hauling some wood, grooming my trail. It not there yet to replace trail machines here in the north that's for sure but the fact if already consider buying one as my ice fishing sled means there's lots of us who could be swayed. I'd go to this sled before an electric vehicle for my use.

@@LiamG903 The range is stated as 100km. Wonderful. There's been no claims to anything other than that's on flat groomed hard pack. What is the range when it snows over a foot of moisture packed heavy wet snow? I suspect its less than 35km.

@@bedlambikes even 60km would still do the trick for me when I'm pushing. The low end will be super handy hauling wood that's for sure. Like I said it's first Gen and a solid one at that. In a few years this will be the leader in the market I bet

@@LiamG903 yah most ice fishermen I know, and I know lots, I live in an inland fishing and logging community, their sleds may drive like 20km over all through out a day of ice fishing, these would totally be fine for most people that only want an ice fishing sled

I can really see this being popular for rentals in national parks like yellowstone. They will eventually be electric only. Ski resorts would be a great market as well. A 62 mile trip is a pretty short day on the trail.

The electric hate comments are so hilarious. Don't worry, you guys can keep your horse and buggy gas sleds as long as you like. The manufacturers don't care what you think if you only ride 2-stroke triples. It means you haven't bought a sled in 20 years... You're not a customer. I'll be purchasing as soon as they can bring it to market. Just like I bought direct injection, SHOT, and turbo sleds. Those technologies were all considered not viable or possible for 2-strokes by dumb commenters. Even if it is a long time from now, that's fine, time flies.

Love it. Interesting they went to 16" tracks just as Skidoo is about to phase them out. Maybe it was just cheaper, but it makes sense for a utility model. Wider tunnel should mean more space for battery. I'm not in the market for a trail sled, and I'm not convinced that Taiga will ever sell retail sleds to consumers, but still cool.

@@DC--zr8gw The design, high quality components, and build quality are terrific. The electronic UI looks sharp. However, we don’t have any snow in Wisconsin yet!! So I can’t tell you how it runs. 🤦

I'll always keep my old gas sleds but next sled i get in a few years is definitely going to be EV. Imagine when we get Polaris, Bombardier, Yamaha and Artic Cat competing in this EV space 🤯

Oh come on. besides a 90s yamaha tripple most of the rest just sounds annoying, especially after a couple a minutes at 8000rpm. If there is a veichle I don't mind it being silent it's a snowmobile and I see zero downsides with it going electric if they can figure out a resonable light battery. Type of drive train dosen't ad or remove any fun since it's already CVT driven. Also atleast where I live there are alot of people wanting ban on them due to the sound.

@@Iceeeen EV's are definitely not the save all, end all answer. There are quite a few downsides. Particularily environmental, by way of emmisions created through out the manufacturing process, infrastructure to deliver power, battery life in cold climate (regardless of heating/cooling sytem), toxic battery disposal, availability of mining raw materials, etc. This sled uses direct drive through a splined belt, no CVT, as explained in the video. That said, those yammies do sound good and cans are definitely annoying. You gotta admit, it was pretty funny, a can on an EV sled.........................

@@jimeverden2244 Where did II say anything of emssions and that crap? I atleast seriously don't give a crap about that. It's all just green washing. What I do care about is how a snowmobile sounds, and I would much rather have a quite one to please some nearby neighbours that hates sounds or the skiers for that mather. I know that this one has direct drive, what I meant by it is the you get the same feel wether it's a gasburner and a cvt or an electric motor. Just that one is sitting at 6-8000rpm screaming and the other is almost quite. If they only could fiqure out to get the battery a tad bit lighter it would be perfect, I swap instantly + you get rid of those stupid piston swaps, last skii I bought just after it had them swaped and 1k later the compression on the stupidly expensive wössner pistons was so low so it wouldn't go into reverse anymore.

Taiga made the news in Montreal with their new factory. It seemed a bit strange to be that far from Sherbrooke, but there are still people in Montreal studying two stroke technology and manufacturing things.

Hoping we have one in our fleet that we'll be able to do further testing on so we can accurately report on charge times, range, weight, etc based on our own experience.

Pretty common actually...skidoo expedition, tundra, skandic...1.5 to 1.6 lugs. Other manufacturers have done the same with their utility sleds before. iirc polaris did an even shorter 1.3-something on a long track. Idiotic to me, but whatever. You don't always want a paddle for some jobs.

I believe its ski resorts, where lift operators, etc... need to get up and down the mountain just a few times a day. Perfect for those applications.

apparently it is unfortunately guided tours, thats why skid-oh is developing the tech aswell, as that is their biggest market. but... the batteries need to be able to do at least 160km, 100 Miles a day in -35c, to be actually viable. And not just in simpmode. .. but that is ofc just my opion, because we drive alot around here, last season I did over 10t km, ~7.5k miles? just on tours. Let alone the fun time on my own^^

I bought one. My market is cabin owner. I want a sled that requires no maintenance. Any of the family can run out hop on and ride for 30 minutes until bored. Something that I don't have to store or shlep gas for. One that the you push a button and will just go!

Like it or not, this is the future for trail sleds, especially rentals. Going to be a long time before they move in on the true mountain sled market though.

I fear that as well... but the thing is, even with the company I work for.. and its a small one. We would have to basically triple our snowmobile amount from 40 to 120 and have 3 different recharging stations with plugs to atleast 10 snowmobiles at a time, with a quickcharge.... aand building the charging stations would cost more than likely more than it would actually be worth. let alone to replace our up to date customer sleds with toys. as i would guess those are at least 20k.

@@TyfoiD75 I have been at so many remote bars and restaurants over the years with lines at the gas pump. I first of all can’t see where these small businesses could afford to install chargers and second, it would never be enough to service the amount of traffic. It will put a lot of people out of business.

@@airman6822 there is also that. Where I live, we plan longer trips according to distance.. and usually with some reserve to spare. And for longer trips, I can take a reservoir fuel tank.. and a powerbank for gps/phone. I do appreciate that they are developing the tech.. As it apparently works, after a fashion. And it might actually benefit real snowmobiles aswell.. But electric cars suck, electric "motor"cycles and bicycles suck, so I am not really believing on this, as it would have to work on the hardest conditions as well. Most likely Tom Cruise will be driving one on the next M:I @ Southpole. ^^

The weight of the units we tested was approximately 750lbs. Which is REALLY heavy, but on the trail they don’t feel heavy. I wouldn’t want to pick one up or have to get it unstuck or anything, but when riding, it is not noticeable. - Luke

It is an interesting machine. Take it to Kevlar lake pulling a modest 300 lbs in the slush then park it out there over night . You get the idea and let me know what you find.............please.

Whats the range of the Taiga riding in a foot or more of fresh heavy wet snow? I hope its not like the electric pickup industry, where everyone refuses to answer questions regarding towing range.

We rode in wet snow, but it wasn’t deep. I’m curious about this question as well. Unfortunately, the conditions we had when testing were different so I can’t comment. I would expect a drop in range. If the snow was untouched, I’d expect a significant drop in range. Especially when you consider that you’d need to be in standard mode, not eco, to keep moving. - Luke

Still didn’t mention battery life, cost of replacement, battery degradation over time. What is battery type? Li Ion? To truly understand what we’re getting ourselves into we need to know the answers to the questions that perhaps the mfgs don’t want to answer. Early adopters will be there in droves but the masses will need more convincing that electric can replace gas in every way.

From their website this includes the battery If the Taiga vehicle is a snowmobile: a THREE (3) YEAR, TEN THOUSAND KILOMETER (10,000 KM) of vehicle travel, whichever comes first, Powertrain limited warranty for recreational use of the vehicle against defects in material or workmanship in the vehicle’s Powertrain.

​@@robertlarrabee9115there's just as many gas stations in the mountains as there are charging stations - none. They are getting the vehicles figured out now, then batteries only need to get 50% better to make gas obsolete for everything but long distance. That may take a year or ten years, but it will happen.

@@SnowmobileHomeMovies Maybe, if an as of yet undeveloped battery technology is developed. For now some are investing heavily short term in Li Ion which just isn’t (IMO) going to cut it for the main stream snowmobiler. Jumping from gas to electric is a far cry from switching from a 2 stroke to a 4 stroke. Remember personal computers? In the beginning every 6 months they got faster and cheaper. The big difference here is every time an electric snowmobile is improved I can’t afford a new one. At 66 yrs old by the time they get electric snowmobiles right I’ll be out of the sport anyhow.

There's too many variables EV's just can't answer right now. Not to mention... The range on range mode? Charging time and costs associated? Cost of home charging system installed? The list goes on. The biggest concern to me is the emmisions are only transferred elsewhere. The amount of materials consumed to get the equivalent of one bbl of oil is alarming. That said... I'd still like to test ride one though. Electric motors are some kinda torque-y.

I think this sled is specifically targeting an area in Ontario Canada where there is a developing charging network for these vehicles.

@@dgreenbluet apparently they already have hundreds of stations throughout Quebec. It's still not positioned to completely eliminate ICE vehicles. The infrastructure is decades away just yet. And then there's everything I mentioned above and more.

I would love to have an e-sled but not cause of any environmental concerns. If we don’t care about the range they can travel without recharge I think an electric drive train is superior to an ICE with a CVT and I would love to get rid of the engine/exhaust sound of my current 600 etec (I know most riders love the sound of their two stroke but I don’t). Will probably buy an e-sled in the future if the range go up and I can afford one

@@drdryyls if you don't like the noise and smell, then you definitely care somewhat for the environment. There's no question an electric motor produces more torque than a comparable ICE. They just don't make extension cords long enough to eliminate the need for the minerals mined to make the batteries. Which by the way, that market is all but cornered by the Chinese. You should care about the environment. It's all the rage, these days. EV's just aren't there yet and I'm not sure they ever will be. This big "green" push is anything but "green". The amount of energy required to manufacture a battery is insane compared to the equivalent energy of one bbl of oil. Progress is progress, I get that. The EV push is not well thought out by our fearless leaders, their main concern is to line the cronies pockets. If that doesn't concern you, then well, sorry to hear that. In the meantime, I can hardly wait for enough snow to get out on my 600R ETEC WT.

@@jimeverden2244 hmm seems like you are digging your self down the rabbit hole. Both ice and electric are bad for the environment, if you care so much why even own a snowmobile. A lot of resources needed to produce a toy most of us don’t even need more than to have fun with. Many even buy their snowmobile on credit and their by be chained to the world order elit that are supposed to push for green electric vehicles. I’ll keep my etec a couple of more years to see if there will be an e-sled that fits my criteria’s by then. Hoping for it since I think it’s a better drivetrain for my riding style.

so the range on "wild"? I do doubt its 300km on a full battery. 50km or so even on the ecomode? And how much do these weight? 600lbs++? Can you tow them with real snowmobiles if they die on the trail?

No surprise but, if you keep it in Wild mode constantly your range will be seriously diminished. This is true for all electric vehicles. We never claimed 300km on a single charge. However, we experienced well over 50km using a mix of eco and standard modes. The sleds we rode, as tested weigh approximately 750lbs. - Luke

Those are really heavy though, like Viking 2 weight^^ For the company I work for, the range on standard would have to be like 100miles on one charge though to be viable to even consider. and even then, we would have to have a person employed who would only be switching chargers during the night. or rotate guides for the job :)

This is a non-issue because there are no charging stations in the Northwoods .... plus, there's no way in hell I'm standing out in the cold for 30 minutes waiting on a fast charge. It's might be the future, but not for a long long time....Maybe decades.

Remember when digital cameras first came out? People loved them and technology progressed quickly. Now most of those digital cameras are not wanted and are taking up space in a sock drawer. Now look at the electric sleds, the sled from last year does not have the same charging potential as the current model year. Electric cars are used as a comparison in terms of potential for sales but if you look at the used market electric cars seem to be a hard sell.

Ok cool unit , they can’t get the auto industry infrastructure done in a timely matter or even make them reliable, how’s the tiny snowmobile industry even going to make this work , hydrogen is the future for electric driven vehicles, our company was testing this 20years ago and it worked .

??? I love my EV. Owned it for 5 years and it is better than my gas car at everything except marathon long distance driving which I never do. So, if someone offered you a fuel phone that you had to stop at a special store for, would you switch from your current phone? Doubt it and that is why I would never go back to a gas car.

You aren't wrong about batteries in the cold. However, if you watch our content on the Taiga you'll see that they've developed a proprietary system that uses a tiny amount of battery power to pre-heat the battery. Once you're driving the battery stays warm on its own. With this system they have basically eliminated all the known problems with batteries in cold weather. - Luke

I hate EV’s but at least Taig did not insist on including the mandatory female engineer, there’s nothing to offer like bombardier dues on both its Water crafts and snowmobiles
