Its actually genius, before most projectors had the step in the beam (some still do but not as big of a step). The step was to serve the same purpose, no glare to oncoming traffic. But with the step design its the whole left side not just a portion as you see with the notch design. You get far more visibility with this notch design as it only blocks the light directly where an oncoming car would be not the whole left side. You get far more upward light creating a longer distance that the beam reaches out.
