MotoMan heads to Kona, Hawaii to go behind the scenes at the 2024 ‪@toyotausa‬ Tacoma reveal. He kicks off this TECH REVIEW of the number one selling mid size pick up truck for a long while now with a bit of ‪@TOYOTAglobal‬ Tacoma history then breaks down the details we know thus far from Toyota about the different grades of coming 2024 Toyota Tacoma including its all new mild hybrid 2.4 Turbo 4 propulsion system. He then rounds things out with a totally new interpretation of the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro as well as something unexpected . . .

Toyota KILLED it!! 🔥🔥🔥 Yes, Ranger Raptor may have more HP, but this ain't far behind. Plus, I'll take Toyota reliability over Ford, ANY DAY! Toyota wants to stay front runner, in the mid size segment and it shows. Wish Tundra would've swang for the fences like Tacoma did. LOVE IT!! CONGRATS TOYOTA TACOMA!

Toyota,ford,Chevy all the same now. Toyotas aren’t being built like the 80’s and 90’s. It’s all about performance not durability. I’ve known people who traded in their Toyotas for ford Chevy and ram and they are satisfy with performance. I think Toyota are boring but I hope with the iforce max it will be fun to drive 300+ HP .

Ford fan and Ranger owner, and I'm going to be honest here. I was thinking I was going to try to get my hands on a Ranger Raptor...until I saw this. While no doubt the Ford has more power, you need to consider this thing is a hybrid. The Taco may be down in power, but some of that power comes from batteries and it's instant power. That 48hp generated by the electric motor will feel far more substantial, and considering the Ranger needs to spool up it's power it tends to be a pig off the start. Plus the Taco looks sick inside and out! Hopefully it'll be cheaper to start and it's a hybrid so I get a government rebate...it's ticking all the right boxes! I usually sh*t talk Taco's for being old tech and slow but Toyota just took it to the next level and then some.

The only car that was close was my 82 Toyota truck. I am going to buy a new one in a couple years. Love the design. I am ammused by his acceleration comments. My Tacoma with the V6 has almost 300 hp and it accelerates from 0 to 60 in 6.8 seconds. Faster than my old 84 Trans Am, not a Ferrari but not slow.

Looking like the Crew cab long box is no more. At least I've seen no mention of it. Makes sense as they went to a new chassis and probably feel like everyone else there is not enough demand to spend the bucks to make it. I never cared for the last v6 and transmission. Its too torque starved and the transmission is unsettled. Maybe you get used to it. I test drove a 19 two times and that was enough for me. I live a mile high and require more torque then that. The turbo should provide more low end along with the 8 speed should be pretty good. I never did find a 19 with the manual. Had I found that I may have pulled the trigger. Hopefully they make more manuals this time instead of being unicorns. I will definitely like to test drive a sport with the MT. But knowing Toyota they will likely make me pay for it sight unseen for something in transit. But I want a bigger box and a better deal so starting to look at half ton chevies with the inline six duramax LZO. The way things are going it probably won't cost more then a tacoma.

Thanks for noticing. A bit behind the scenes: Certain episodes are shot by different camera operators. Scott is the one that shoots all Toyota & Lexus episodes and does a great job. As such, the camera gear on this one was the same as previous episodes - however, what was noticeable from the raw footage, the rain and grey skies helped us a lot with good, defused light. We also shot this one a bit different by walking in and out of frame between each car. Why? Because they are VERY far apart on a steep hill.

Good video, thank you. Great detail. Not a fan of turbos. Not a fan of hybrids, even mild hybrids for torque enhancement. Yes, all the different flavors are confusing. It is a pickup, my preference (and I have a Tacoma) is keep it simple and low priced with a V-6 engine. If I want bells and whistles, I can after-market them, but all that bling from the factory is good for some folks. Mine is used as a pickup truck, not a bling-mobile.

Looks like the TRD sport will be the lowest trim that one can get both the rear coil suspension and 6 speed Manual Transmission. But no six foot box with the double cab that I can see. Seems all the mid sizes are going to crew/short box now. This is not enough for me to trade my 19 Pro 4X. Full sizes are starting to see big discounts and that will only get better. But mid sizes will likely climb in costs. These new tacos will probably have addendums. However, the fact it has rear coil springs has my attention. I bet this is a nice riding mid sizer. Hopefully they will make more manual models. They wereso rare before. Almost impossible to find.

2024/2025 is going to be a 'battle royale' in the mid-size truck segment. GM, Ford, and Toyota now have fully redesigned trucks hitting the market around the same time with each bringing their philosophy of what represents a segment leader. -- Toyota: Holding on to its reputation as the segment leader -- GM: Taking a segment of Toyota's market share with Chevrolet and GMC offerings to suit a broad set of customers -- Ford: Making the new Ranger the volume king in the segment with more interior room, engine choices, and capabilities (towing/payload) Victims: Jeep Gladiator, Nissan Frontier, RAM)

@HiPlains1 Год назад
Well at least your honest. However I find it difficult that a truck can be both fantastic and the drive train awful in the same sentence. Back in 2019 I test drove a taco two times. But unlike you was unwilling to pay for something that is torque starved, shifts early, and is constantly searching gears. What really killed the last test drive was driving on a level frontage road at around 50 mpg and the gearbox keep shifting up/down and could not get settled. I looked at the sales guy and he knew. He just said turn around. Maybe this new model finally addressed those issues using induction. But I still find it remarkable that over 200K people/year find this drive train is acceptable. Perceived reliability and resale only goes so far in my book. I still have to drive the damn thing everyday.

Honestly there is no rush, the infrastructure isn't there yet. Plus, where I live everyone lives in condos and it's hard and expensive getting a home charger installed. I put a down payment in for a full EV that I'm never going to see, so I've decided to cancel it and try for the Taco hybrid and ease my way into the electric market slowly. As long as Toyota has something in the works, I think they may be in that sweet spot to transition, plus the batteries are going through a bit of a change at the moment becoming more efficient. They don't need to be first, they just need to have quality when they do present a product.
