Once the EV fad is over and the legacy carmakers have spent too much on making EVs and selling all of the ICE-making equipment, some of these carmakers are going to go bankrupt. They’ll go out of business because they won’t be able to afford going back to making ICE. Volvo will be one of these companies. Volvo is dead in 10 years sadly.

It's only been used for cleaning around the house not damaged or used hard by me. The Chinese can't even make a simple plastic bucket that can last. Mark, after your XC 90 recharge video we were a bit apprehensive on the idea of getting one, but after my wife’s XC 60 was totaled, we found a great deal on a 2023 XC 90 recharge T8 ultimate. It was originally purchased as a executive company vehicle and driven from Canada to California and then the company went under and was sold to the dealer we bought it from. Only 1500 miles and $12,000 off MSRP. We’ve had it for almost a year now and it’s been absolutely flawless and we are averaging around 1500 miles of driving between fuel stops as my wife’s daily commute is only about 25 miles. The transition from electric to the gasoline engine is really smooth, and although the ride quality isn’t the most supple experience vs the German offerings, it’s still extremely comfortable on longer trips and my wife enjoys the fact that it’s a decently luxurious experience without being outwardly flashy as a luxury vehicle. It’s a nice understated luxury.

Drove Genesis G80 electric. Poor range and so short on interior space. 2023 540 or 540i has no back seat, range is sub par and info systems are in the dark ages. The volvo s90 recharge is only plug in hybrid with a real world 42 miles, amazingly fast, unnoticeable transition from electric to gas, had a genuine back seat with plenty of legroom, and the interior design is both elegant and functional. body roll simply doesn't exist. I mean, Volvo is a relatively small brand that isn’t doing shabby in terms of financials, but they’re not big enough to be standing on their own yet. They traded ownership under Ford and now they’re under Geely. The premium/luxury market is where most of the dough lies. Hence they chase after that market. They now trundle the line of understated yet decently premium. I’ve seen the current generation T5s be as simple as they come, because it’s just a commonplace Turbocharged 4 cylinder mill. Europe literally offers a 6 speed manual in the S90 and wagon variants. The T6’s and up are where they get complicated IMHO.

I've still got an '18 T6 XC60. It's my backup/secondary car, but I do have a sweet spot for it. It's not a PHEV, but so far I've been lucky with the super/turbo I4... The infotainment and tech does feel a bit old now, but it still looks good on the outside and remains pleasing and calming on the inside. I actually looked to replace it a little while back, but a new '23 XC60 is so dated compared to competitors... And BEV SUVs are still evolving... Thus just going to hold on to the old girl for another year or two until EV SUVs become a bit more mature. Sad cause it's a great car and served me well, but I also can't justify replacing it with a new one given how dated the SPA platform is. Great video, Mark!! I went XC60 to SQ7, roughly in the same timeline as you went XC90 to X7M, and your thoughts and experience have been invaluable... And also mirrored my own.

I hope to find one 5 years from now that's 20k, slap a warranty for a few k so I don't have to worry about it, and just enjoy it for however long and get rid of it. As a daily, I don't think I could accept this, with how far behind it is from the competition. But as someone looking to experience and take in a variety of vehicles, this is definitely on that list.

I picked up a 2018 S90 T5 without the Supercharger, CPO with 58K miles for $25K out the door in September 2023. I have thoroughly enjoyed this vehicle as a Volvo owner over the years. Pre-owned with all of the luxury features, safety, and the CPO warranty, these are a great option. Great build quality, comfort, and backseat space that makes having passengers and comfort for trips a cinch. These are not perfect cars, none are, but for the value pre-owned is very hard to ignore. I know the "China" aspect of Volvo's ownership really digs at people so they just ignore the prospect of owning them, which is a shame since other brands are into the same realm as we speak, but so far it's been a solid product and I hope that they only improve with time as they go full EV and focus on making that part of their business an industry leader. Great review, and I recommend a CPO version very highly.

Bring me back years ago when I looked at this car and thought how beautiful it was. Anyway, Volvo should have 1.replace the turbo charge with MORE hybrid battery, making it at least 60km electric range. 2.Have an option to engine-charge the hybrid battery at desired speed. For example, lower than 40km/h use electric, faster than that use engine to charge back to battery. This way driver would never run out of hybrid battery in city mode where the engine humming can be obviously audible.

After 34 years in the auto industry, I believe any manufacturer that goes 100% electric will regret it. Does any electric car fanboy realize that every car will require the annual average electric consumption of two average sized homes' A/C usage. (source: U.S. Department of Energy) ? So, annually putting ten million electric vehicles on the road means the equivalent twenty million home's usage. What power grid could deal with that, year after year, even if we put windmills everywhere, stuck solar panels on millions of acres of public land, built lots of unwanted nuclear plants and doubled our use of fossil fuel electric generation?

The design direction Volvo went under Geely is tragic. As you touched on there was a lot of hype and excitement for the brand as the current gen models came out and had a pretty exciting and lively (although problematic) drivetrain with the SuperTurbo 4, but they just fizzled it out dumping every dollar into trying to make hybrid drivetrains that many of the other big brands will just plain do better. Then the dropping of the fun red colors and bursting blue, then after promising to do so never actually developing any performance upgrades to the R design, making a shit Polestar version of the S60, etc. they had the opportunity to appeal to a different market and kind of develop the brand into being known for making innovative, reliable and sporty cars again but they jumped the gun. Volvo under Ford was a different company than under Geely, and when you compare riding in a well kept P2 car compared to riding in one of these new ones, you see how the brand has just lost touch.

I had a 2021 XC60 T5 FWD (I live in Florida) that I replaced with a 23’ B6 Ultimate dark AWD with air suspension. Aesthetically, The 2023 is so nice overall. Way more initial quality issues then my 2021. The body control modules and computerization is totally different from 2021. It doesn’t feel like the same brand of car, in a bad way. On delivery day my salesperson had to take the car back to service and hard reset it because it wouldn’t stop crashing. I’ll walk up to the car and hear all this clicking and popping from the body control modules. Open the door and it’s clicking and popping. Sometimes I’ll start the car and the screens don’t come to life. I’ll shut it off, open the door and restart and they’re still acting all weird. I loved my 2021 but hated the FWD characteristics. The AWD B6 is so much better and it has great power. I’m pretty sure this will be my last Volvo, which is a shame because the fundamentals are so good. I drove Audi and VW for years and they’re just so much more dialed in every aspect. My 2021 felt like the older Volvos. It was just trusty and solid as a rock and never caught me off guard. The new tech in the post refresh is just horrible. Also can’t turn off the start stop. I test drove the PHEV but for the price and all issues folks were having I couldn’t see the point. Volvo is lost in the sauce with this new EV tech crap. They’ve lost sight of what they did so well for so long. BEAUTIFUL cars. I’ll be sad to see mine go. It’s a joy to look at.

You should know that Volvo applied all the new driving behavior you're praising here to all prior T8 vehicles. You just do the software update and the car drives SO MUCH BETTER. They don't have that disconnected feeling they use to have, it's a very cohesive driving experience and it has nothing to do with the extra power of the new electric motor. As an 2019 XC90 T8 owner with about 105,000 miles on it now, I do have some concerns about longevity, but I just did a full range test and 15.3 miles on a route where it did 15.6 miles new... so I'd say we're good on that front 🙂 Margin of error stuff. Did have an issue with the main battery disconnect or whatever it's called, replaced under warranty just shy of 100,000 miles. Would have been $1,500 out of pocket, which isn't really all that bad considering the traction battery has to come out to do the job and that's a dealer price. We will drive it until the wheel fall off. Not sure how much the supercharger or turbo would cost to replace, but that'll probably be work I'll do myself if it comes to it... though I may just pay to get it done, will have to see how my health is.

Outstanding view of this automobile. On point, as always. Still the best interior and sound system available. I can't help but think this mad dash to EV's is going to wind up as a pig in a poke. Infrastructure is still not there and American driving habits (100+ miles on a routine basis) make EV's a viable option for urban cars only. Plus, no one is going to spend whatever the cost is ($$$) for battery replacement for the powertrain. The cost to repair will exceed the value of the car. With the single turbocharged engine, Volvo would be better off building these configured cars and leaving the EV craze to Polestar.

Well, the avg American doesn't do 100+ on the daily. More like 20-40 at most. I can understand your reasoning. Let me ask regarding cost of replacing an EV pack: is it much different from an ice car? How many people replace the engine on their 10 or 15 year old car when it goes tits up? It's always "costs more than the value of the car" reason that comes up when a big repair appears. Then the allure of a newer car rears it's head, even though that costs 2-3x the repair. Anyway, even if a battery replacement in a 10 year old EV would cost only 5-7k dollars instead of $12-15k, people will spend more on a newer car replacement I think. Oh, and your infrastructure point is valid. Kinda wish we had legislation promoting charging infrastructure to help with that

Meaning, even if it is faked, this would be an example of faking it well, compared to so many unbelievably cheapass examples out there. ● Also, abandonment is a vague concept, but maybe it is a general trend? I.e. all (practically focused) cars get abandoned more quickly, as an expression of a trend? What should matter is whether in many years you will still get the support for it that you need. That's usually a manufacturer policy.

Most pools are cleaned weekly in the summer. Now, if the pool guy is showing up weekly in winter, we’ve got a problem.

Only Volvo I would buy is the mild hybrid. Maybe. And I've owned 4 Volvo's over the years. And after watching this... definite no. I will buy an Acura ICE and hope it lasts forever.

Volvos aren’t perfect, but at every auto show I go to, Volvos feel different when you get inside them.. the materials and ergonomics are absolutely perfect. The tech may not be great but just being in the cabin of one is special

My brother had a XC90 T8 Recharge.. Electrical nightmare. car could not sit for 48hr without having dead 12V systems. Dealer never could solve the problem and Volvo bought the car back.. Get the Warranty...
