Join CR at CR.org/joinviaYT to access our comprehensive vehicle ratings. CR is a mission-driven, independent, nonprofit organization.
This week, we share our early impressions of the 2025 Toyota Camry. While Toyota didn’t revolutionize the 2025 model, it gets a big powertrain update, as every Camry will only come as a hybrid. We discuss why this change shouldn’t scare longtime Camry lovers and why Toyota’s reliability record should boost buyers’ confidence. Plus, we answer questions about legacy CR vehicle tests and EV home chargers.

The car itself is fine, the issue with Toyota right now is the buying experience: Between chronic low inventory, dealer add-ons, market adjustments, and not being able to custom order, it’s a hard no for me. Up until 2 mos ago, I had owned Camry’s since ‘04 (6 in total)- No more, Toyota dealers (at least near me) absolutely suck

I expected this too, but surprisingly they're selling for MSRP or even a little less around here. No stupid Pulse junk either. The inventory problem I see is they're almost all LE trim, seriously like 9 LEs for every one XLE or XSE when searching inventory.

I have been an admirer of the Toyota hybrids forever! I think this was a good move by Toyota. For all you people that have never owned a Toyota Camry hybrid, RAV4 hybrid, Prius, Avalon hybrid, Corolla hybrid, they are great. You will love them as much as I do. Thanks Consumer Reports! You guys are incredible for speaking TRUTH! Keep it up.

I’m sure the quick oil change shops will use any cheap oil in the Camry. The customer will never know as long as the oil is brown. The business competes on price and doesn’t want to lose a customer. CR should test the shops.

My husband has a 2023 Camry ICE -- only because back then, the delivery time for the hybrid version was 8 months and his Honda Accord lease was up in 2. He loves it and will lease another Camry in 2026. With all of them hybrids now, there's no lag in getting one. Me on the other hand, did like the blandness of the Corolla Cross, so I lease a KIA Niro EV. Love my EV (would never get a Tesla) and in 2027, can turn it in for another EV (or hybrid), as who knows where we are with EV and hybrid batteries by then. Oh, and since we park inside our garage, I'll be getting a level 2 charge point charger installed next week in the garage.

It’s great to have freedom of choice! I’m glad you got what you need. I on the other hand have had a Tesla for 6 years now & will never buy an ICE Vehicle unless maybe a truck. MY Midrl 3has been low low maintenance, realizable & dependable. I have 102K miles on it. Original brakes. On my my Third set of tires with first set lasting 47K, 45the second set. I will need to change the wiper blades & will change the cabin air filters again for the third time. The 12 volt battery went out in 4 years & Tesla mobile came & replaced timely at home & cost me $114.00 out the door! My F150 & infinity I took in to service station & cost me minimum$139.00 plus extended warranty! Glad it wasn’t a BMW, Mercedes or Audi then those batteries cost $500 30:17 based on coworkers that have various German cars. I did have a rear lamp assembly I had to replace due to water getting into it. Was odd. But that’s it. I plan on keeping this cars until it no longer drives or I break down & buy a new EV. At least 6 persons from my department have bought a Tesla based on my results. Let’s see how the Chinese EV invasion of cars do against all these established vehicles.

@carljaekle

Several reasons, my Tesla has instant torque, unmatched by any gas car or hybrid. Amazing performance, and gets over 130 MPGe. A lot of tech not available from other brands. Most people don't keep cars 30 years. I am planning on 6-8. CR just confirmed that Teslas are cheapest cars to maintain of any brand. I do respect Toyota going to an all hybrid line up with the new Camry. Fuel efficiency is very important.

It means that the Camry will start at $30,000 now at minimum, and that is just the base model not including taxes and registration fees. Continues the escalation of prices. The Dodge Omni and Plymouth Horizon were last I remember were rated "Not Acceptable" a long time ago. I remember the Audis with sudden acceleration got that same rating as well. Plus a Toyota SUV (the Lexus GX they mention) that flipped over on the track. I am sure the Chevy Blazer EV, if they did not give the "stop sale" order to fix the software CR may have put a Do not buy on that car until it was fixed - but GM acted before CR had to do that.

Great episode. I'm glad to hear that the CR crew will be buying an Camry SE, as the take rate of the SE in the past generation, I believe, was actually greater than that of the LE. It feels like this is the right choice for your readers. I think the criticism of the gauge cluster on the X-trims is a bit picayune; you learn the menus pretty quickly, and its also basically the same digital cluster in most Toyotas. I guess nitpicking is good, though, bc it speaks to the execution of the vehicle overall. Also, I loved the questions about the "sample defects." Would love to see that again.

I think it’s smart to make hybrids just the regular offering. More car companies should do that and stop trying to make hybrids work when they clearly aren’t what most people want or can afford. Even if hybrids could go as far as gas cars or could charge in 5 minutes the infrastructure to charge them is still 10 years or more away.
@reachblowsdick7222
@reachblowsdick7222 14 дней назад
How is making hybrids the regular offering smart? Once the hybrid batteries give up it's thousands to replace and then there's the hybrid braking system that if it fails will cost as much as replacing the whole hybrid batteries. I had a Prius that hit 160K miles with no issues but once the batteries and brake recharging systems failed, the cost to replace both was almost $10K. I traded it for a regular Camry, my Prius lasted 10 years trouble free but the little money I saved on gas was less than half of what it would cost to get my Prius running normal again, NOT worth it. Meanwhile my uncle still has his old 1999 Camry with over 360K miles which he uses to drive to work everyday, and he paid $10K back then because it was pre owned. Paying $10K for a car that's 25 years old and still running, sounds like a better investment than I got for my Prius.

Toyota's have been selling hybrids in Europe (almost) exclusively for a few years now. Yaris, Corolla, RAV4, their big sellers, Prius (of course) are all exclusively hybrids. So they have had some experience on that front, and are confident about the reliability of their systems on a large scale. Which, granted, can be a scary proposition (eggs in one basket and so on). As for their trucks, that's a different story. I wouldn't get a scaled up hybrid system for a work truck. Rather, a diesel, turbo-diesel even, or in the US, a V8.

So if you buy a non-Tesla today you will need to buy a CCS charger and then replace it in the future at some point or use annoying adapters. Tesla sells a universal charger today that makes this a lot easier to deal with. Simply remove the charger for NACS or push a button before removing it for CCS.

Annoyed that the gas tank size keeps getting smaller with each new generation. Range is one of the best Camry attributes. Still great, but would love to have the 2012 17 gallon tank back at least as an option. Not sure why only full size trucks have a bigger gas tank option.
@djplonghead5403
@djplonghead5403 18 дней назад
The Camry still gets 600 miles of range on a tank. A prius has an 11.3 gallon tank and can do 600 miles. I think that is plenty. The larger gas tank- the more weight and less cargo room... smaller trunk or no spare tire.

Remember the more Hybrid Toyota/Lexus make for the A to B vehicles, the more fun cars they can also make (GR Corolla, GR86 etc). So no V6 for the Camry? I can deal with it, as long as Toyota/Lexus keep the GR line-up, TRD PROs and Lexus V8 F and F Sport Performance products coming.

I'm not sure why CR didn't point out that you are not buying a "charger" for your EVs. The charger is built into your car, the thing you are buying is an EVSE or Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment. In simple terms, you are buying an extension cord. Some have more features than others, but you actually do not need a cord that includes a box to charge your car at home.
@Sashazur
@Sashazur 18 дней назад
Because everyone calls them chargers, and you use them as such, even though as you say they are basically extension cords.
@Tokamak3.1415
@Tokamak3.1415 18 дней назад
I think they missed the whole point of the question. If you buy a L1 or L2 CCS port charger today and your car gets supported by Tesla for NACS conversion or comes with an onboard NACS connector it would be silly looking for a CCS style EVSE. It might be prudent for most to just hang on to just L1 until their vehicle is supported by NACS adapters and buy a J3400 L2 adapter that would stay with the vehicle instead of swapping back and forth between CCS and NACS.

As an owner of a '23 V6 Camry XSE, the XSE trim should be removed from the lineup. How can Toyota make an XSE with such an anemic power train? Going from 301hp to 232?? That's just awful. Never mind the awful exterior aesthetics.

Not Recommended vs. Not Acceptable So what happened? Well the front fell off. That's not very typical I'd like to assure you. Well was this car safe? The one where the front fell off? Well I was thinking more about the other ones.... If this wasn't safe why did it have 80 tons of oil in it? Well I'm not saying this one wasn't safe, it's just not as safe as some of the other ones.... Why? Well some of them are built so that the front doesn't fall off at all... Well wasn't this one built so that the front wouldn't fall off? Well obviously not... Well how do you know?? Well..because the FRONT fell off and 20,000 tons of crude oil spilled into the sea and caught fire...I'd just like to make the point that that is NOT normal. What sort of standards are these cars built to? Oh very rigorous engineering standards... What sort of standards? Well the front's not supposed to fall off for a start... What else? Well there are regulations about building materials they can be made out of... What sort of materials? Well cardboard's out... And?? No cardboard derivatives...no paper...no string...no tape...they gotta have a steering wheeeeeeeeeeeel....🤣🤣
