21-12 is an offensive concept that combines 4 widely used traditional offensive sets (2-2-2, 2-3-1, 1-3-2, and Open) into a single concept that is easy for players to understand and allows coaches to train and modify quickly with small-sided 3 Man games and motions.

Dude this is an outstanding break down of the five most common offensive formations (4 of which you mentioned) and a way easier way to understand them. Wanted to suggest that your 21-12 setup (traditional 2-2) is also the 1-4-1 the moment the 4 perimeter players rotate as a group 45 degrees in either direction. Might be worth adding to your instruction bag of tricks. Awesome work on all your vids

The green screen is great, but these vids are even better when you include video of live players

I'm totally with you. The tough part is getting all of the live videos. I'm currently working on finding many of the combinations of motions and rotations to create new videos with live examples

Patrick, great stuff! Do you have motion/rotation rules/options for 1-4-1?
@POWLAX
@POWLAX 5 лет назад
What's up David? I don't have anything put together yet for a 1-4-1, but you can use 21-12 rules depending on how you set up the 1-4-1. For instance, if you want both groups to function evenly, you can run 12 sets where one of the players in each group who would have been on the wing, will play inside on the crease (I call these shifted sets because the player on the wing has shifted to the middle. You see this formation a lot with dodge clear through follow motions). Another way that you can make it work is to have two of the players in one group operate inside. For instance, if you want to start the moton with the Attackman playing outside and the midfielders playing inside, you'll have the individual midfielder top center, both other midfielders on the crease, and the attackman in a regular 12 set. Then, as the play develops, you can do mumbos to get the attackman inside and midfielders outside and vice versa. The key would be to create motions out of those positions that would flow. Hope that helps!

What's the midfield rotation from a dodge from x? Your video says that the midfield unit stays put but it seems to go against the motion offense concepts.
@POWLAX
@POWLAX 5 лет назад
I like the players to stay and read when someone is dodging from X because it spreads the field up top and they can read slides, make cuts, and put themselves in skip lanes. Also, if the midfielders have to move as a part of their own motion and then move again in 1-2 seconds, it can confuse them. I'd rather have them read and then get back to a 21 if there are no openings. I don't want them moving again because I said so and ignoring the opportunities that would come from drawing the slide on the alley dodge. If you do want them to rotate right away again, the simplest rotation would be the same as the Attack. But if you are running a Dodge Follow Float and a Clear Through Rotation with both sets, the players will stay in the same 2 spots. Example, the midfielder on the crease floats off to the backside on the midfield alley dodge and the ball is passed forward twice and the attackman dodges up the opposite alley, The midfielder who floated off the crease will go right back to the crease. If we take the same example and have the midfielder run a fade rotation, the original dodger will cut the middle, ball side midfielder will fade to up top, and the top center midfielder will fill to top left. Within that one, the players will rotate positions. If the ball goes out on an end line and the attack dodge is starting our motion, then I will have the midfielders exchange backside using the "Duke Motion" which will set them up for their next dodge. The key is using motions and rotations to allow the players to make reads and play fast. It really just depends on what you'd like them to do. As spring gets closer, I am going to make a video with all of the motions and rotations that can be run using 21-12.

How do you determine if a group does not rotate when the other group initiates motion with a dodge?

I like the 4 motions to go from a 21 to a 12. Are those the same motions for the attack?
@POWLAX
@POWLAX 3 года назад
Yes, they can be. It's all dependent on what you want them to do.

Do you have a motion to move from a 12 to a 21 for the Midfielders?
@POWLAX
@POWLAX 5 лет назад
There are a few motions that can move from a 12 to a 21, but for the most part, we want to end motions in a 12 because it puts players in shooting positions on both wings. It's tough to get a player to stop their dodge top left or top right. However, there are a ton of motions that put a player on the crease and clear space for a pass up top and dodge to the opposite wing. The main ones that I like are a sweep where we push one of the two backside players to the crease. If you cut the middle with the backside, the top center player will fade. If you clear through with the top player, the backside player will hold. You can have players dodge the alley as well, but the big thing there is that one of the players must get to top center for the possible backward outlet. It will basically end up looking like a lopsided 21, where the dodger gets to the mid-wing and the two backside players will get to the crease and top center-ish.

What is causing the Attack or Mid to not rotate sometimes?
@POWLAX
@POWLAX 4 года назад
For the most part, you would want it to be the players reading the play and making their own decisions. For this specific example, I liked having three players high because it allowed all three to maintain step down positions where they could read the play instead of forcing the motion.

What are good drills to incorporate for this offense?
@POWLAX
@POWLAX 2 года назад
I have a video called building offense with 3v0's, 3v2's and 3v3's, then there's West Genny, Y Drill, basically anything with 3v sets that isolate the groups.

9+, if they can all pass and catch. The key is implementing it with small sided 3v2's and 3v3's
