The BRAVESTAR 21.5 oz selvedge denim/jeans is the only jeans I will wear next year for a minimalist approach to heritage style. I'll have another pair or two for variety but for blue indigo style, this is the one!
I love Japanese jeans and selvedge for that matter but I wanted it in a good and affordable range. I found this one from Brave Star and it is awesome! Watch my video for the first impression.
This video is the things I don't like about it (better be honest and realistic).
I am not sponsored by Brave Star but love what the company is all about. Check them out and their products here:

Just bought the one of their denim jackets with the sherpa lining. Stoked to see how it looks! They seem to be a solid brand and love Made In The USA

Have you cold soaked them yet? You should always cold soak your selvedge jeans before wearing them to get the starch out and loosen the fibers. I had the same problem with the Brave Star 21.5 double black top button. But, I've also had the same thing with other brands heavyweight. I just simply took a screwdriver or pocket knife to loosen the hole just enough to make buttoning them a little easier. And, you should always up size when buying heavyweight selvedge because, the fabric is much more dense. Happy Selvedgeing!

I got both the 21.5oz and 25oz Sumo from Bravestar. Overall good, but I learned to size up one and go with a true straight for a better fit and more comfort. If I want a slimmer look while keeping a heavyweight denim, I look for a high rise, relaxed tapered fit from Oni, Samurai or Pure Blue Japan.

Thanks for the recommendation on the size and fit. I’ll definitely keep that in mind on the next selvedge jeans that I’ll purchase.

i always wear 32 from Brave Star. But I got the 33 for the 21.5oz and that was perfect. I've worn mine many times and while they aren't super soft yet but they're broken in enough that i enjoy wearing them.

Respect from me brother David! I love those shovels and I wish I can get a hold of them here in Hawaii. The Japanese are excellent at keeping them alive and in original shape. Congrats on the BS 21.5! You’ll love it. Stiff at the beginning but it does soften up.

Lol! Bruddah u should know how hot it is in the Islands!! Weren’t u in Okinawa with USMC? It’s hot there too! That’s one reason why I never came back to Kaua’i! But liv’in in Bay Area seems like 21.5 oz will work good for me! I bought a pair off EBay but it was Slim Straight & returned. I want True Straight.
@StylishGreaseMonkey
@StylishGreaseMonkey Год назад
Haha, true Johnny! I didn’t mind it back then since it is what we do. Besides them MARPATS like getting dirty and sweaty. I just complain but it will be cooler soon here… The Bay Area is perfect for the heavy selvedge. I used to hang out in San Francisco back in the day and definitely loved the vibe. People don’t look at you funny when your rocking leather clothes in town. Here, wearing pants, they think you’re going somewhere… you know what I mean! 😜

Once again, great content! You strike me as a man of taste. May I suggest an idea for a video? I'd love you to record a video of yourself listening to a song by Tool for the first time. If you haven't already that is. Anyway, consider listening to the song titled "Pneuma" from Tool's album "Fear Inoculum" . It's a great piece of music that would be the equivalent to selvedge, workwear, and overall solid construction and genius engineering. Just light a cigar, pour yourself a glass of scotch (or whatever you prefer) and press play. It's a whole category of youtube, and I'd love to see and hear your first impressions. If you don't want to do it as a video, just listen by yourself. It's worth it. Keep it up and thanks for great content.

Thanks a ton! I might but I need to read on how that affects my content here. I try to stay away from copyright violations. Maybe I'll do it without monetizing it for now. It's a great idea by the way!

I think I've just come to the conclusion that Brave Star jeans aren't for me. The hip area in every pair is just unbearably tight, but only that area, where every other brand of jeans I wear doesn't have that issue.
@StylishGreaseMonkey
@StylishGreaseMonkey Год назад
Sorry brother. I agree though that they do cut it tight around the hip area. Try Guston jeans. That’s another American made selvedge.

Do you get your bravestars hemmed at the factory or do you keep them at their standard length?
@StylishGreaseMonkey
@StylishGreaseMonkey Год назад
Hi, I kept it at a standard length with the 21.5 oz which gave me plenty of length for a couple of folds. I used their hemming services before on my 14 oz. I really like longer length though.

Hey, so I want to order a black 21.5 from BS. I’m normally 30x30 for every brand. Any recommendations on sizing if I too don’t want it super tight?
@StylishGreaseMonkey
@StylishGreaseMonkey Год назад
From my experience, order your size but be prepared for the changes down the road after the break in and the few soaks. I have soaked mine once and no changes yet. It shrunk a tiny bit (as expected) but it will stretch back out and according to the sanforized denim definition that it will stretch up to an inch or more. I really don’t mind it stretching but that’s me. Oh, I like to order mine longer because I like to cuff my selvedge. I wear a 34/32 and ordered a 34/36.
@sdsurfs
@sdsurfs Год назад
@@StylishGreaseMonkey Nice thank for the reply! I ordered a 31x35 no hem and will cuff. I figured if the waist is too wide i'll try to soak them early and try to aggressively shrink them. Stoked!

You mentioned in 1 video where you washed your jeans to shrunk your waist but it was still loose, in this video you are saying you can’t close your top button?
@StylishGreaseMonkey
@StylishGreaseMonkey Год назад
I am discovering that different materials do different things. The 14.5 BS is made from the materials (selvedge) out of the Cone Mills of North Carolina. Well before they closed down anyway. Bravestar and Gustin bought a bunch of materials and still make jeans out of them. The 21.5 oz BS is made from Japanese Selvedge. I’m really not sure why it reacted that way since both are sanforized (pre-soaked). It shouldn’t shrink. It is normal for it to relax and loosen up over time. My other video in which I washed the 14.5 oz in hopes it would shrink is not the thing to do. I shared that on the vid itself since many (like me at the time) was ill-informed. I’ve done a little bit of research since then of course. Thanks!

Try wearing the True Straight fit. It's a little looser than a taper fit. That's what I wear, I'm 6 foot 185. Perfect fit. One cold wash.
@StylishGreaseMonkey
@StylishGreaseMonkey 10 месяцев назад
I am a sucker for vintage 501s so yes definitely agree with the straight cut. I’ve been running a lot lately and have slimmed down a bit. The fit is better for sure but now my other selvedge jeans are too loose yikes!
@dumbernews
@dumbernews Год назад
Most people should Stick with 180oz or lower 15-16oz is perfect. Every denim from Bravestar will shrink different some more then others it’s the way they process the denim. Heavy 1 wash denim from iron heart is the way to go some are soft out of the gate
@StylishGreaseMonkey
@StylishGreaseMonkey Год назад
I agree! I have the 666s and they are soft out of the box. I bought heavy selvedge because I want to venture into the fade! I also like to share my experiences with them (good or bad).
@romeoiipunzalan1079
@romeoiipunzalan1079 Год назад
A lot of selvedge jeans are heavily starched, that whats making them stiff... you have to really soak them to get rid of the starch...

Always take one size up in 100% cotton heavyweight raw denim! I ended up buying and selling 3 different brands, 1 japanese brand (samurai s710xx 19oz) and 2 indonesia brands (warpweft co. 19oz and olblue co. 23oz). Samurai and warpweft were true size, and they were too small. Oldblue co. 2 size up (they have no odd size), and they were too big. They were awesome jeans, though. Now i wear samurai s520xx 21oz relaxed tapered fit. Up 1 size. Theyre perfect! If you cant raise one of your leg up to waist height easily, dont buy them! Doesnt matter if they look good when you wear them, you have to upsize!
@StylishGreaseMonkey

You're absolutely on point.. Definitely what I have learned throughout the process as well is to upsize if you want to be comfortable.
