A demo of the Festool OF-2200 router along side a Festool OF-1400 router for comparison since most of us are more familiar with the OF-1400. Demo of dust collection and power between the two using 6/4 hard maple, a large edge profile, and plowing a 1" deep 1/2" dado.

Great review, love your honest and self a-facing approach. Always find your equipment reviews refreshingly informative .

I also use my wife's identical yoga mats in my workshop LOL - she hasn't missed them whereas I have found 101 uses for them and they save my knees day after day.

Paul, thanks for the effort the to put out great videos. If you were going to do shelf dados or sliding dovetails using the guide stop and rail, would you reach for the OF1400 or 2200?

What brand of bit were you using for that dado? Looked pretty impressive with both routers.

This video just goes to prove that few people really have any use for the OF2200 when the 1400 is more than capable, lighter, and just easier to do free hand work. If you need the power of the 2200, you should probably be using fixed router in a large table anyway. I can see some commercial applications for a free hand plunge router with 2200 capabilities, but I can not imagine many. I agree with Surrey Kitchen's assessment, as well.

I usually recommend the OF-1400 over the 2200 for users unless they have a big need. A pro friend of mine did use a 2200 to spin a ridiculously large bit on an equally ridiculously large table, but that's a very big outlier. I have both and pull out the OF-1400 9 times out of 10. On the Tim Burton table, I used the 2200 for better dust capture, but the 1400 would have worked, too.

tonkatoytruck I use the 2200 for doing worktops. I would rather have enough power than not enough. Only issue I have is that the dust collection when I am using a worktop jig

Hello, Can you tell me, does the collet shaft on your Festool OF1400 get hot to the touch when you use your router even if there is no load or bit installed. I did install a router bit in mine and put it running for a short while to make sure all was working OK. Just on the spindle shaft just above the collet nut, it gets fairly hot, does that happen on your OF1400 ?? Afterwards when I checked it when I put it running with the router bit installed, the collet nut or bit were not hot, its just the shaft above the collet nut that gets fairly hot to the touch. Is this normal for this to happen ? Was wondering if it will cause the bearing to fail prematurely because of the heat. This does not happen on my smaller OF1010 so I was wondering if there is a fault on my OF1400. Maybe its normal for this machine, how does your OF1400 behave when running ??

DEXTER941 yep the spindle on my OF1400 got hot too - after its properly ran in the problem disappears - dont worry about is (bit late but awell, hope this helps)

can the 1400 route at an angle? I am not a big router person yet but do routers route at angles? maybe a 5 degree angle or a 12 degree angle... just a slight slant. I really love your videos man thank you!

Thanks, Joe... I don't know of a router with a tilting base, but that doesn't mean you can't attach angled skids on the base to accomplish an angle. Since you'd need to keep the base's orientation to what it's routing consistent at all times, it would be better if you attached the angled base then guided the router with, say, the guiderail. Then the complication is that the tilted base would mean the guide rods wouldn't fit in. Many possibilities to get around that (like simply keeping the flat side of the base against the guiderail yourself). If you are trying to route away an angled surface instead of a one-pass groove, You'll want to instead use ramps. I did this to 'pre-sculpt' the underside of my No Comment #2 table at 8:30 of the build (either regular or guitar edition :)

I have a couple of Festool tools but watching this demo I ask myself why can't Festool make a router (hand held) smaller then these 2 monsters. It's kind of learning how to ride a bike on a Harley Low Rider in stead of a small Honda. I think they are way to big .

I have been routing worktops for 30 years. The OF 2200 is over complicated and too heavy. It has also blown up once, the spindle lock is tempramental and the dust guard doesnt click down anymore. It spends more time in the repairers than working. In my opinion it is unfit for pourpose. Looks great, no stamina.

As a former molder operator parts of cutters do fly off when stressed too much. Taking a one inch deep pass is foolish and you are playing with fire. The whole reason for a plunge router is to take a series of passes for a better result while doing it safely. I saw many accidents when guys would push equipment too hard or were simply careless. I enjoy your videos but this one put you at unnecessary risk.

Interestingly enough, that's one negative review compared to dozens of positive ones. No, I'm not a pro, but many of the aforementioned reviewers are. Perhaps you just had a lot of bad luck.
