#21 John Deere 1025R Deep Tilling with King Kutter XB (Who needs a plow?) 

Rewatched! I love the intentional way you move the tractor so the tiller has a chance to work the ground. Yes, I do believe you are the Master Tiller!

I oive your attention to details with the tiller! You can tell you get great joy and pride in out of tilling!

I purchased a new Frontier Tiller two years ago and have yet to use it. With all the deer we have around here it is difficult to have a garden, but I held up since I didn't have a plow, but I now have a turning plow, and a middle buster as well. My brother wants to buy some implements for his tractor, but so far the only thing he has is his finishing mower. That tiller you have on that tractor did a nice job of breaking up the plowed soil and leaving it ready to be planted. Since I just purchased the 3032E John Deere tractor and have a plow which I will use to turn the soil and then use the tiller to further break up the soil and begin planting. This ground have not been used as a garden in decades when my grandparents was alive and gardening. I hope that the tiller you have give you great service and last you for a lifetime.

Ever watch a farmer plaw his field? Gotta do the headlands too when you are finished. take 2 laps around the outside of your garden. One would even do the trick, but i always take 2 passes. That will take care of your ditches and make everything as smooth as glass. My garden is about the same size maybe even a little smaller and my 1025r is the perfect tractor for it. Glad you enjoy yours as much as we enjoy ours!! BTW i have been watching your other videos tonight, pretty cool i must say, you must be the community go to guy like i am with our tractor! Hi, Tim, I know this is an older video, but, I would like to say something about how you operated the tractor and implement in this video. We have a family farm in the Uk and we run tractors from about 50 - 170 hp. I couldn't help but notice that turning on every pass, you would bring the rpm down, disengage the PTO, make the turn, re-engage the PTO, and then bring the rpm back up. Although I can understand that stopping the implement each turn is safer for people close by and saves some fuel, doing this also puts increased wear on both the tractor and the implement. this is because the engine is always changing RPM, the tiller also keeps stopping and starting and changing rpm, and the mechanism that engages the PTO undergoes more wear. Just passing on something I have learnt to you. Keep doing what you are doing! Have fun with little Johnny, and we look forward to seeing more videos from you in the future.

Tim, there should be a dial below the seat that controls the hydraulic flow of the 3 point. All the way open allows for fast dropping of implement. Closing that valve slows the rate of drop or flat does NOT allow 3 point to move at all. For tilling gardens, closing this valve may help a bit. You may need to "play" to get best rate of drop for your machine.

When coming up to the end of a row, DON'T STOP MOTION. A suggestion, either turn off the PTO after every row or start lifting the 3 point quicker toward the end of each row. I till gardens in my area with my 50 year old tiller and Kubota tractor. But the garden looks great afterwards.

Tim cut a head row on both sides first. Then you don't have to be as precise on where you start and stop the tiller. When finished with all your cross tilling go back to your head rows and run them again. This leaves only two spots that have dips needing to be raked.

to till with out having those holes at the end you need to lift the till as your moving to the end it takes some practice but it beats racking lol

Good work on the garden [& excellent camera work]. Thanks for posting your experiences. I've only done mowing in my meadow so far but am currently researching sunflowers as a crop for next year. Our meadow is infested with cheat grass [smooth brome] & canada thistle so I'm hesitant to till because these like to grow in disturbed soil. Looking at the 'permaculture' or 'no-till' method for that reason. Guess it wouldn't hurt to experiment by trying both strategies. One concern I see with your tiller rig is that spinning drive line. Shouldn't it have a cover that is fastened by chains to prevent rotation? I've read that many accidents involve getting wrapped up in drive lines spinning at 540 rpm. Let us know if this worry is real or imagined.

I did not read all 75 replies. I noticed your pto shield turning with the shaft. My XB has chains at each end that prevent the shield from turning. Am I missing something? Enjoy all your videos, very good especially when your family is with you.

When I till a garden. I go all one direction then switch after "cross hatching". But I go back down the sides to take out that valley left by the tiller. But it ALL DEPENDS ON THE SIZE OF GARDEN, TRACTOR & TILLER.

Yea you have nice soil there if you have good ol red clay like here in NC you need a plow the tiller just bounces off the clay once plowed you can hit it with the tiller I'm jealous.

Now that you have had the kk xb tiller for a couple years. Is it a well made tiller? Also are they center or offset drive? Rural King doesn’t list it on the web site l, id like to be sure before I order one. I need it to be centered so my tire tracks don’t show.

How's this tiller holding up over time? I'm thinking about buying one. Do you have any regrets?

Tim on your tiller how do you adjust your depth looks like you shoe and adjustment isn't there

I just bought the same tiller and I have the same tractor. Did you have to shorten your PTO shaft at all?

Is that king litter tiller a reverse rotation, it does a better job than the 4' jd. tiller. Jd. seems to push the tractor more.

I am curious why you went with a king kutter over a JD 647? This one better? Do you recommend it over the 647?

Is that a 1025r or a time machine?

there is one thing you mite try if you like doing it the way your doing it when your done tilling go a cross the ends of the garden so you got only 2 holes to rack I think it mite fill the one on the ends just thought of that

How deep can this tiller go? i have heavy compacted soil and should like to amend this soil by at least one or more feet..

Do you take your skid shoes right off?

Plot is like a lawn. First I mow a row completely around the area you are going to be working on.

Tim, it might be easier to start by that tree and finish on the open end of the garden.

where did you get the rear rim covers?

I'm gething mi self a rotary tiller but I would prefer a plow for the first past let say you arrive on a client and he just got i'm self a new house and he know noting about what is under ground.the place as never bin till and let say there is brick, metal, some wire and all kind of junk that must do a nice job to your tiller LOL.

City Slickers Always Amaze Me On How They Do Things That Pertain To Farming. Your problem with the ditches is that you let it down and then stop. Using a tiller you are supposed to stay moving while machine is in the ground.

Don't stop at the end of your of rows. Raise the tiller as your moving to prevent "ditches".

I would have left the little garden at 5.5 ph for Blueberries!

Do you need a face mask when you are tilling lime ?

My King Kutter XB Top Gear Box Exploded Today... Also Better keep the tine bolts checked... They will Loosen up often...

I sure wouldn't want to be paying for this by the hour, SLOW...Shouldnt take much more then 30 minutes to till both ways in this small garden.

You don't want to lime where you plant your potatoes or tomatoes. They like a low ph soil.

soil was already broken...tilling at that speed was unnecessary and harmful to soil structure.
