Tiller Challenge; Compact Tractor & King Kutter Tiller; Hard Clay or Top Soil? Pool Removed

Tractor Time with Tim

Late last fall, Steve removed a swimming pool from his back yard, hauled in what was called top soil, and then asked us to till in order to prep for grass. Tractor Time with Tim uses the John Deere 1025R and his King Kutter Tiller on this super hard clay dirt. Do you think Steve will get grass to grow where his pool use to be?

Awesome job! My neighbor had a similar situation and high clay content, he decided on Sod... The company came in, sprayed some fertilizer down, leveled and prepped the surface and rolled out the sod. After a few hours he had one of the best looking lawns on the block. Five years later it still looks amazing. Thanks for sharing!
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 6 лет назад
Yea, Katriel kind of mentioned that. If you can get grass growing, it will make its own topsoil. Sod would be the fastest way to do that.

It doesn't apply to this video necessarily but I found this wet year that if I rototilled my rutted up lawn that if I set the rototiller shallow, it cut up the grass roots. A thick new lawn came in within the next month with no reseeding. I did it in late August and September rains got a new lawn going. I was prepared to reseed the following spring but didn't need to.

I'm going to go through my tiller this year. Haven't done it since I got it back in '03. I'm going to change the gear oil and make a new breather for it. After I get it done and our garden tilled you want to buy it so you can have a heavier tiller? I just need enough out of it to buy another one that is iMatch compatible. :-) Now that I have a welder maybe I can make mine fit an iMatch. Soon as I figure out how to weld! :)

Tim, watching that tiller jump, it looks like you either don't have or have a bushing on that top pin that's too small. Get some large washers for the sides of the bushing too. Makes a world of difference. I believe I got all of mine at Tractor Supply. Unfortunately, you may have to go top several stores because they always seem to be out of stock on these types of items. I was using 1" bushings but found that they really needed one slightly larger, 1-1/8" or 1-1/4" can't remember.
@TractorTimewithTim

I have the "cat1-cat3" bushing. There is still some play there. Not much, but wow, it is quite exaggerated in some situations.

I sell unfiltered topsoil, you will find some roots in it and even a few rocks about the size of a golf ball but its the real deal. A lot of people that sale dirt as topsoil they screen it and add sand to it in hopes to keep it from packing giving the homeowner the look and feel of topsoil. Bad thing about adding the sand is now the dirt/sand will not hold water. Kind of goes like this Topsoil, dirt, fill dirt.

@72hourbob61
@72hourbob61 6 лет назад
I feel bad for him. I just have a pickup truck with a dump bed so I do not do big loads. About 1.7 sq.yards. fill goes for around 25.00, nice dirt for about 35.00, and topsoil about 60.00. From what I saw he got the 35.00 but paid for the 60.00.(I do start to charge mileage after the 1st 10 miles.)

North Alabama (Madison) A lot of building going on here. As soon as I see someone getting ready to clear some land I am there asking where they are having to take the dirt. A lot of the time I can save them time if I am just a mile or so down the road. Its harder to get clay in Madison as much of its a swamp. (dont tell all the people that are moving here there new $750.000 house was built in a swamp.) They call them a house with an adjunct waterway.
@truckinchihuahuaalvieschre2494
Been thinking about tilling part of my yard and seeding it this year. But my tiller is not a 3 point it mounts to my Mitsubishi D1500 diesel compact tractor only. And that tractor has not been started since I got my Johnny almost 4 years ago. And has not had fuel added to it for almost 10 years. Yes that's right the fuel economy on this Mitsubishi is actually that good. I bought it 10 years ago and filled the tank it's still got almost a half a tank on a 5 gallon tank. And I have put almost 50 hours on it. Wish my Johnny can do that.
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 6 лет назад
That story gets better (or at least bigger) every time you tell it. Before we know it, you'll be telling us that you have to drain the diesel tank occasionally, otherwise it would run-over. :-)

Just have to be real careful with the grass seed. Forget regular blue grass and head for the creeping red fescue and NEVER pick up the clippings. Core aerate every spring AND fall.

Great Job as always. I couldn't believe Katreil didn't have her flip flops on LOL how can we call her the flip flop farmer without the proper footwear. The people that say you charge to much for tilling don't understand the investment in johnny and the tiller and you have to consider the depreciation on the equipment for maintenance and eventual replacement of said equipment I here it a lot as well thats too much after i explain a few things to them then they go oh I didn't think of that and I understand better know why you have to charge that. LOL Have a great weekend and God Bless Hope Christy's foot is healing well.

Good job! Permit to remove a pool?
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 6 лет назад
Yea, I should have asked about that. Not sure why that was necessary.
@GrampysTractor
@GrampysTractor 6 лет назад
its necessary so that all parts and concrete of the pool are removed and not buried in place. My neighbor filled his pool with sand and when he sold to house the lender found there was a pool and no permit had been issued to remove it. Marion county for you.

clay can be top soil. I live in Belgium, as you may remember and we have area's not even 20 miles away where the soil is pure clay.

Should of added compost instead of topsoil or added peat moss to what they called top soil. If it get that hard it won't drain well unless organic matter is added to soften it.

This wasn’t topsoil...it was fill dirt. They will likely get grass to grow, but it won’t be nearly as nice as topsoil.

A "Mack" jacket? Where did you get it? We've got a Mack tractor and a BIG Kenworth since the Mack blew up. I would dearly love to get my son in law a Mack jacket (his first truck was a Mack). I am very close to my son in law, we bought the Kenworth with him in KY on the dealer lot and me sitting here in OH looking at the 18 pictures of each used truck and their specs. What a blast! When the trailer gets set up, we will start hauling "real" tractors and combines.

Probably 35 yrs old. My brother got two jackets when he bought a used cabover mack way back in the early-mid 80’s. He gave one to me then. I was so proud of it! As you can see, I’ve taken pretty good care of it!!

Tim, my comment to your "prices too high" statement. You could just tell them to do that with a walk behind tiller. Then they will be willing to pay 50-100$ an hour to hire someone to do the job with a tractor & tiller.
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 6 лет назад
We don’t get many complaints on price except for tilling. Folks think we should till for nearly nothing.
@Drew6709
@Drew6709 6 лет назад
Tractor Time with Tim: Can't do that. Fuel, parts (tiller tines, gearbox grease, etc..), included hauling fees, mileage for tow vehicle, etc... And tilling has nearly the most abuse on a tractor and tiller. Will the client pay $3,000 for a new tiller????? NOT LIKELY.
@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 6 лет назад
Right. Having said that, garden tilling requires very little skill and experience, at least compared to most brush removal, drainage, digging etc. projects we do. It is very straightforward. So, there should be some discount on our rates for that.
@Drew6709
@Drew6709 6 лет назад
Tractor Time with Tim: I do give SOME DISCOUNT RATES for certain clients. One in particular because the job takes me 10 minutes and is 5 minutes from home. It takes me longer to load & unload the tractor than do the tilling job. A 6'2" tiller makes quick work of a 15' wide garden.
